What is Chhadimar Holi?
Chhadimar Holi, which means the Holi of striking with canes, is the gentle, tender cane festival celebrated at Gokul, the town where, by tradition, the infant Lord Krishna was raised, in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the most distinctive and charming of all the many Braj Holi celebrations.
Unlike the famous and boisterous Lathmar Holi of nearby Barsana and Nandgaon, where the women wield heavy wooden sticks, Gokul celebrates the tender infancy of Lord Krishna with a far gentler and softer tradition, entirely in keeping with the loving spirit of the baby god. Here, the local women take on the beloved role of the gopis, playfully chasing and lightly striking the men with soft, flexible canes or chhadis, rather than heavy lathis, while the men good-naturedly protect themselves with shields or simply a cloth. It is a sweet, joyful and deeply affectionate celebration, soft and gentle in spirit and rooted in the love and devotion of Krishna's very own childhood home, quite different in feeling from the energetic festivals of the other Braj towns.
When is Chhadimar Holi 2027?
Chhadimar Holi in Gokul for 2027 is on Friday, 19 March 2027, though some local temple calendars note it on the day before, 18 March, so it is well worth confirming the exact day closer to the time. It is celebrated mainly in the afternoon, from around 12 noon to 4 PM, in and around the historic Murlidhar Ghat and the ancient temples of Gokul.
As with all of the Braj Holi festivities, the dates follow the traditional Hindu lunar calendar, so they shift from year to year and can vary slightly by temple and local calendar, which is why some note 18 March here, so it is always wise to reconfirm the exact day nearer the time when planning your trip over from Jaipur, as our Holi 2027 in Mathura and Vrindavan guide sets out the full season's schedule.
Where is Chhadimar Holi held?
Chhadimar Holi is centred on the historic Murlidhar Ghat and the ancient temples of Gokul, a small, sacred and atmospheric town set on the banks of the holy Yamuna river, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. Gokul is deeply revered across India as the place where, by beloved tradition, the infant Lord Krishna was lovingly raised by his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda, making it one of the most tender, intimate and cherished sites in all of the Braj region.
The celebration unfolds around the old riverside ghat, the ancient temples and the narrow, winding streets of the town, with a grand procession winding through the crowded lanes during the peak afternoon hours. Being a small, intimate and close-knit town, Gokul offers a wonderfully close, atmospheric and devotional Holi experience, quite different in scale and feeling from the huge, famous celebrations at Barsana or Vrindavan.
The traditions and what happens on the day
Chhadimar Holi is a gentle, joyful and devotional celebration, rich in lovely traditions:
The cane ritual: the local women, playing the cherished role of the gopis, playfully chase and lightly strike the men with soft, flexible canes or chhadis, while the men good-naturedly protect themselves with shields or just a simple cloth, all in affectionate, laughing good humour.
Colours and flowers: the celebration includes gentle, natural organic herbal colours and soft showers of fresh flower petals, rather than any harsh chemical colours, entirely in keeping with its tender, gentle spirit.
Singing and devotion: the air fills with joyful singing and devotional music and chanting in honour of the child Krishna, echoing through the ancient lanes and temples of Gokul.
Makhan-mishri prasad: a beautiful and especially fitting tradition sees the loving distribution of makhan-mishri, fresh butter and rock sugar, as sacred prasad, a touching nod to Krishna, the beloved makhan chor or butter thief, of the Braj legends.
The procession: a grand, colourful and joyful procession winds its way through the narrow, crowded streets of Gokul during the peak afternoon hours, the beating heart of the whole celebration.
Knowing that the main celebrations and the procession all take place in the afternoon, from around 12 noon to 4 PM, helps you time your day trip out to Gokul well and be there for the heart of it.
Chhadimar Holi and the Braj Holi season
Chhadimar Holi is one of the many wonderful and varied celebrations of the Braj Holi season, the most famous and spectacular Holi in all of India, which unfolds over about a week across the different towns of Braj, each with its own distinctive tradition and character:
Laddu Holi at Barsana: the sweet opening, as our Laddu Holi 2027 in Barsana from Jaipur guide describes.
Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon: the famous stick-and-shield tradition, as our Lathmar Holi 2027 in Barsana from Jaipur guide describes.
Chhadimar Holi at Gokul: the gentle, tender cane festival honouring the infant Krishna, on 19 March 2027.
Phoolon Wali Holi at Vrindavan: the beautiful flower Holi, as our Phoolon Wali Holi 2027 in Vrindavan from Jaipur guide describes.
For travellers and devotees, experiencing the Braj Holi, including the tender Chhadimar Holi at Gokul, is a true bucket-list experience, unlike Holi anywhere else in the world.
How to reach Gokul from Jaipur
Gokul lies in the Braj region, across the state border in Uttar Pradesh, about 200 km from Jaipur, roughly 4.5 hours by road, close to the main town of Mathura:
By road via Bharatpur: the usual and most direct route runs from Jaipur east towards Bharatpur, in eastern Rajasthan and then across the state border into Braj to Mathura and on the short way to Gokul. During the Holi season the roads are very busy and congested, so set out early and allow generous extra time.
Via Mathura Junction: Gokul is reached via Mathura Junction, the nearest major railway station to the town, from where local auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available for the short onward drive out to Gokul and the ghat.
Basing in Braj: most visitors sensibly base themselves in nearby Mathura or Vrindavan and take an easy day trip out to Gokul for the afternoon events, which is much the most comfortable and relaxed approach for the festival.
Because of the distance from Jaipur and the heavy Holi crowds and traffic in Braj, the smoothest and least stressful approach by far is to travel over, base yourself comfortably in Mathura or Vrindavan the night before and then take an easy day trip out to Gokul for the afternoon Chhadimar Holi, rather than attempting the whole long round trip from Jaipur in one day.
How to plan your Chhadimar Holi trip from Jaipur
A little planning makes all the difference for a Braj Holi trip from Jaipur:
Base yourself in Braj: stay in Mathura or Vrindavan, close to Gokul and take a day trip for the afternoon celebrations, rather than the long same-day round trip from Jaipur.
Book months ahead: rooms in Mathura and Vrindavan fill up very early for the Holi season, so reserve well in advance, ideally several months ahead.
Time it for the afternoon: the main Chhadimar Holi events, including the procession, are in the afternoon, from around noon to 4 PM, so plan your day around that.
Confirm the date: as some calendars note 18 March rather than 19 and dates follow the lunar calendar, reconfirm the exact day nearer the time.
Go with everything arranged: the travel, timings, crowds and logistics are far easier with an organised trip, as our Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan guide shows how Braj fits a wider trip.

What to expect
Chhadimar Holi is one of the most tender, charming and intimate of all the many Braj Holi celebrations. In the small, sacred town of Gokul, among the ancient temples and the old ghat on the banks of the Yamuna, the local women, as the gopis, playfully chase and lightly strike the men with their soft, flexible canes, amid gentle organic herbal colours, soft showers of fresh flower petals, joyful singing and the sweet distribution of makhan-mishri, all while a colourful, happy procession winds its way through the narrow afternoon streets. It is gentle, joyful and deeply devotional, lovingly honouring the beloved infancy of Lord Krishna in his very own childhood home.
It is a softer, smaller and far more intimate celebration than the huge, world-famous festivals at Barsana or Vrindavan and that gentler, more personal feeling is very much its real charm, though it still draws good, devoted crowds. For those who love festivals, tradition and the gentler, more tender and devotional side of the Braj Holi and who plan their visit carefully around the afternoon events, Chhadimar Holi at Gokul is a lovely, moving and memorable experience and very well worth the journey over from Jaipur.
