AgraThe best time of day
Whatever the month, the best time of day at the Taj Mahal is sunrise. The marble changes colour in the low light, the platforms are at their quietest just after the gates open, and in summer it is the only cool, comfortable hour of the day. Late afternoon towards sunset is the second-best window. The middle of the day is the worst: hottest, most crowded and flattest in light. This is why our sunrise Taj Mahal tour exists, and why the overnight tour is the surest way to catch that hour.
The catch: winter fog
Here is the part the brochures skip. December and January, though pleasant by day, bring dense morning fog to the Agra region. On a foggy morning the Taj can be a pale outline rather than the crisp white monument of the photographs, and the fog also delays trains, including the Gatimaan Express from Delhi, which can upset a tightly planned day trip. It does not happen every day, and it usually lifts by mid-morning, but if a clear sunrise matters to you, late October, November, February and March are safer than the depths of winter.
The monsoon, and its quiet upside
The monsoon months of July to September get written off, but they have a case. The crowds are at their thinnest, prices at their lowest, and the Taj under a brooding monsoon sky, with the Yamuna full behind it, is a genuinely dramatic sight that few tourists see. The trade-offs are real humidity and the chance of rain interrupting your plans. For a traveller who dislikes crowds and does not mind the weather, it is an underrated time to come.
Festivals worth timing for
If you can, time a February visit to catch the Taj Mahotsav, a ten-day festival of crafts, food, music and dance held near the Taj Mahal, which adds colour to an already ideal month. Around each full moon, the Taj also opens for night viewing on five nights, excluding Fridays and the month of Ramzan, on separate, limited tickets. Both are worth planning around if your dates are flexible.
