What is Dauji Huranga?

Dauji Huranga is the famous, boisterous and high-energy cane-and-colour festival celebrated at the historic Shri Dauji Maharaj temple in the town of Baldeo, in the Mathura district of the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh. It honours Lord Balarama, known lovingly as Dauji, the elder brother of Lord Krishna and is one of the most distinctive and joyful of all the Braj Holi celebrations.

The Huranga is the unique, spirited and wonderfully distinctive play at the very heart of the festival. In it, the women of the village playfully tear the men's shirts or kurtas, soak the torn cloth in natural colour made from turmeric and tesu, the bright flowers of the flame of the forest tree and then use the soaked cloth as playful whips to joyfully chase and drive the men around the temple courtyard. It is a chaotic, exuberant and wonderfully joyful celebration of simple folk devotion, full of local character and above all it serves as the grand, boisterous and fitting finale of the entire long Braj Holi festival cycle, which stretches remarkably over some forty days across the whole region, from its beginnings to this last great day.

When is Dauji Huranga 2027?

Dauji Huranga 2027 will take place on Tuesday, 23 March 2027, on the day of Chaitra Krishna Dwitiya in the Hindu calendar. The celebrations start around 12 noon at the Shri Dauji Maharaj temple in Baldeo, so it is very much an afternoon event.

Dauji Huranga comes right at the very end of the long Braj Holi season, serving as the boisterous, joyful grand finale of the whole festival cycle, a day or two after the main colour Holi across the region. As with all of the Braj Holi festivities, the dates follow the traditional Hindu lunar calendar, so they shift from year to year and can change slightly, so it is always wise to reconfirm the exact day nearer the time when planning your trip over from Jaipur, as our Holi 2027 in Mathura and Vrindavan guide sets out the full season's schedule.

Where is Dauji Huranga held?

Dauji Huranga is held at the historic Shri Dauji Maharaj temple in the small town of Baldeo, about 22 km from Mathura, in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh. The temple is beautifully dedicated to Dauji or Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna and is one of the most important and revered temples devoted to Balarama in all of Braj.

Baldeo is a small, devout and close-knit town and the Huranga unfolds in and around the temple courtyard and the surrounding streets, making for a close, intense and wonderfully intimate celebration. Being a little further out from Mathura than the other main Braj Holi towns, it has a more local, rustic, folk character and feeling, which is very much part of its real charm and appeal, though it still draws good, enthusiastic and devoted crowds for the great grand finale.

The traditions and what happens on the day

Dauji Huranga is a chaotic, joyful and unique celebration, rich in its own distinctive traditions:

  • The Huranga play: the women of the village playfully tear the men's shirts or kurtas, the central and most famous ritual of the whole festival, all carried out in high good humour and laughter.

  • The colour whips: the women then soak the torn cloth in natural colour made from turmeric and tesu flowers and use the soaked, dripping cloth as playful whips to chase and drive the men joyfully around the temple courtyard.

  • Natural colours: the colours used are entirely traditional and natural, made from turmeric and the bright tesu or flame of the forest, flowers, in keeping with the simple folk spirit of the festival.

  • Folk devotion: the whole celebration is a chaotic, exuberant and deeply joyful expression of warm local folk devotion, held in loving honour of Lord Balarama, Dauji, the elder brother of Krishna.

  • The grand finale: Dauji Huranga serves as the boisterous, high-energy grand finale of the entire 40-day Braj Holi festival cycle, a genuinely fitting, joyful and unforgettable end to the long and colourful season.

Knowing that the whole celebration starts around 12 noon helps you plan your day trip out to Baldeo to arrive in good time and be there for the full, colourful spectacle.

Dauji Huranga and the Braj Holi season

Dauji Huranga is the grand finale of the Braj Holi season, the most famous Holi in India, which unfolds over about a week of main celebrations and some forty days in all, across the towns of Braj:

For travellers and devotees, experiencing the Braj Holi, from its famous celebrations through to the grand finale of Dauji Huranga, is a true bucket-list experience, unlike Holi anywhere else in the world.

How to reach Baldeo from Jaipur

Baldeo lies in the Braj region, across the state border in Uttar Pradesh, about 205 km from Jaipur, roughly 4.5 hours by road, just a little beyond Mathura:

  • By road via Bharatpur: the usual route runs from Jaipur east towards Bharatpur, in Rajasthan and then across into Braj to Mathura and on the short way to Baldeo. During Holi the roads are very busy, so set out early and allow generous extra time.

  • Via Mathura: Baldeo is only about 22 km from Mathura, so you can base yourself in Mathura or in nearby Vrindavan and take a short drive out to Baldeo for the afternoon Huranga.

  • By train: a train from Jaipur to Mathura, the nearest major railhead, followed by a road transfer the short way to Baldeo, is another good way to reach the area for the festival.

Because of the distance from Jaipur and the Holi crowds, the smoothest approach is to travel over, base yourself in Mathura or Vrindavan and take a day trip out to Baldeo for the afternoon Dauji Huranga.

How to plan your Dauji Huranga trip from Jaipur

A little planning makes all the difference for a Braj Holi trip from Jaipur:

  • Base yourself in Braj: stay in Mathura or Vrindavan, close to Baldeo and take a day trip for the afternoon celebrations, rather than the long same-day round trip from Jaipur.

  • Book months ahead: rooms in Mathura and Vrindavan fill up very early for the Holi season, so reserve well in advance, ideally several months ahead.

  • Time it for noon: the Huranga starts around 12 noon, so plan your short drive from Mathura out to Baldeo to arrive in good time for the start.

  • Note it is the finale: as Dauji Huranga comes at the very end of the Braj Holi cycle, after the main Holi, plan your wider trip around it if you wish to see the whole season.

  • Go with everything arranged: the travel, timings, crowds and logistics are far easier with an organised trip, as our Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan guide shows how Braj fits a wider trip.

Tips for visiting Dauji Huranga

  • The Huranga starts around 12 noon, so plan your short drive from Mathura to Baldeo to arrive in time.

  • Base yourself in Mathura or Vrindavan and take a day trip out to Baldeo for the afternoon.

  • Wear old clothes you do not mind getting torn or soaked in colour, given the nature of the play.

  • Protect your phone, camera and valuables, as it is a chaotic, high-energy celebration.

  • Reconfirm the exact date, as dates follow the lunar calendar and can shift slightly.

  • Book your Mathura or Vrindavan stay months ahead, as rooms fill up fast during Holi.

What to expect

Dauji Huranga is one of the most boisterous, chaotic, colourful and joyful of all the many Braj Holi celebrations, a truly fitting grand finale to the whole long and varied season. In the small, devout town of Baldeo, in and around the Dauji Maharaj temple courtyard, the women of the village playfully tear the men's kurtas, soak them in turmeric and tesu colour and use them as whips to drive the men joyfully around the courtyard, amid colour, folk singing and exuberant devotion honouring Lord Balarama, Krishna's elder brother. It is loud, colourful, chaotic and full of local character and energy.

It is certainly not a quiet, gentle or orderly occasion and it is a close, intense, boisterous and high-energy folk celebration, so it is best to come well prepared for the crowds, the colour and the sheer exuberance of it and simply to embrace the spirited joy of the day. For those who love festivals, local folk tradition and the lively, earthy, devotional side of the Braj Holi and who plan their visit carefully around the noon start, Dauji Huranga at Baldeo is a unique, colourful and unforgettable experience and a truly wonderful, fitting way to end the whole great Braj Holi season, very well worth the journey over from Jaipur.

We booked our Dauji Huranga 2026 trip with Experience My India, and the entire experience was very well planned. Abhay ji helped us choose a comfortable itinerary from Jaipur, arranged a good hotel in Mathura and provided a clean private cab for the Baldeo visit. The arrangements were smooth, and being there for the colourful Dauji Huranga was an unforgettable experience.
