Quick Answer
Delhi to Kashmir (Srinagar) is about 682 to 745 km by road and roughly 14 hours or more via NH44, though the mountain stretch runs longer. Most travellers fly in about 1.5 hours or take a train to Katra and the Vande Bharat to Srinagar. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans Kashmir trips.
Delhi to Kashmir is a bucket-list journey to the Srinagar valley, the "Paradise on Earth" of the Dal Lake, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages gives you the real distance in both directions, an honest take on the long road and every way to travel, including the brand-new Vande Bharat rail link to the valley across the world's highest rail bridge.

Where is Kashmir and why do people go?
Kashmir, centred on the city of Srinagar, sits in a high Himalayan valley in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Long called Paradise on Earth, it is famous for the Dal Lake with its houseboats and shikaras, the Mughal gardens and the surrounding hill resorts of Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
People come for the scenery above all, the lake at dawn, the meadows and gondola of Gulmarg, the pine valleys of Pahalgam and the tulip garden that blooms in spring. It is a longer haul from Delhi than the Uttarakhand hills such as the Delhi to Rishikesh distance or the Delhi to Haridwar distance, which is exactly why choosing the right mode of travel matters so much.
How far is Delhi to Kashmir by road?
Delhi to Kashmir (Srinagar) is about 682 to 745 km by road and the map time runs from roughly 14 to 17 hours across three routes.
Route | Distance | Map drive time |
Via NH44 | 697 km | 14 hr 27 min |
Via NE5 and NH44 | 745 km | 15 hr 15 min |
Via NH44 | 738 km | 17 hr 4 min |
The NH44 route is the main corridor, running through Ambala, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Jammu, Udhampur, Ramban and Banihal before descending into the valley.
How far is Kashmir to Delhi?
Kashmir to Delhi is about 682 to 701 km, with similar routes in reverse.
Route | Distance | Map drive time |
Via NH44 | 694 km | 13 hr 48 min |
Via NH44 | 682 km | 14 hr 4 min |
Via NH44 and NE5 | 701 km | 14 hr 8 min |
How long does the Delhi to Kashmir drive really take?
Here is the honest part the map does not show: the drive is long and the mountain section is slow, so plan for more than the map's 14 hours. Just as with the long Delhi to Manali distance, the map time flatters the mountain reality. Beyond Jammu, the NH44 climbs through Udhampur, Ramban and Banihal, a beautiful but landslide-prone stretch that can slow to a crawl in rain or snow.
Split it over two days, with an overnight at Jammu, Katra or Patnitop, rather than driving straight through.
Drive the mountain section in daylight, for both safety and the views.
Check conditions before you go, since the highway can face weather closures, especially in winter.
For most travellers, this is why the flight or the train, rather than a single long drive, is the smarter choice.
How do you reach Kashmir from Delhi by flight?
Flying is by far the fastest and most popular way to reach Kashmir. Direct flights from Delhi to Srinagar take about 1.5 hours, turning a two-day road journey into a morning.
Airport: Srinagar International Airport, with daily direct flights from Delhi.
Onward: taxis reach the city and the houseboats quickly from the airport.
Best for: almost everyone short on time, which is most visitors.
How do you reach Kashmir from Delhi by train?
This is the big change. Kashmir is now connected to the national rail network and you can reach Srinagar by train across the spectacular new Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link. From Delhi it is a two-leg journey with one change.
Leg one: take a train from Delhi to Katra (Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra), for example the fast Vande Bharat that reaches Katra in the afternoon.
The change: at Katra there is a compulsory security and health check before boarding valley-bound trains, so budget about an hour.
Leg two: board the Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat, which crosses the Chenab bridge, the world's highest rail bridge and reaches Srinagar in around three hours.
One ticket: a single through-ticket can cover both legs and the route is designed to run reliably even in extreme winter.
We build this scenic train route, with a Vaishno Devi stop at Katra, into our Kashmir tour packages when it suits your dates.
A direct overnight Delhi to Srinagar Vande Bharat Sleeper is planned to launch by around late 2026, but it is not operational or bookable yet, so for now the Delhi to Katra plus Katra to Srinagar route is the way to travel by train.
How do you reach Kashmir from Delhi by bus?
Buses are the budget option, but they make for a very long journey of well over a day. Government and private buses run from Delhi towards Jammu and onward to Srinagar, usually with a change at Jammu.
Route: Delhi to Jammu by overnight bus, then a bus or taxi onward to Srinagar over the mountain highway.
Best for: budget travellers who do not mind a long, multi-stage trip.
Note: the same NH44 mountain conditions apply, so allow extra time.
Which is the best way to travel from Delhi to Kashmir?
The right choice depends on your priority:
Fastest: the direct flight, about 1.5 hours, ideal for most travellers.
Most scenic and reliable: the train, with the Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat avoiding the unpredictable highway and crossing the Chenab bridge.
For the journey itself: the road, split over two days, for those who want the adventure of the drive.
For a first Kashmir trip with limited days, fly in and out. For a more memorable, weather-proof route, combine a train to Katra and Srinagar with a Vaishno Devi stop. Many travellers pair Kashmir with a classic Golden Triangle tour of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur to round out a longer India trip, often adding a Sunrise Taj tour in Agra along the way.
When is the best time to visit Kashmir?
Kashmir is a year-round destination and the best time depends on what you want to see.
Season | What to expect | Best for |
Spring (Mar to May) | Blooming tulip garden, mild weather | Gardens and gentle sightseeing |
Summer (Jun to Aug) | Pleasant valley, green meadows | Gulmarg, Pahalgam and lakes |
Autumn (Sep to Nov) | Golden chinar leaves | Photography and calm trips |
Winter (Dec to Feb) | Snow, cold, Gulmarg skiing | Snow lovers and skiers |
Spring and summer are the most popular for the gardens and meadows, autumn is magical for the chinar colours and winter turns Gulmarg into a ski destination.
What can you see in Kashmir?
A Kashmir trip rewards even a few days with unforgettable sights:
Dal Lake: houseboats, shikara rides and the floating markets of Srinagar.
Mughal gardens: Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and the terraced lawns above the lake.
Gulmarg: the meadow resort with its famous gondola and winter skiing.
Pahalgam: the pine valley and base for treks and the Amarnath route.
Sonamarg: the "meadow of gold" on the road towards Ladakh.
Tulip Garden: Asia's largest, blazing with colour in spring.

Delhi to Kashmir (Srinagar) is about 682 to 745 km by road, depending on the route. The map time is roughly 14 to 17 hours, but the mountain section beyond Jammu makes the real journey longer, so many travellers split it over two days.
The map shows about 14 to 17 hours, but in practice the drive usually takes longer because the NH44 mountain stretch beyond Jammu is slow and weather-dependent. It is best done over two days.

Yes. The Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat runs on the new Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, crossing the Chenab bridge and reaching Srinagar in around three hours. It is built to run reliably even in extreme winter.
