What is the best route from Delhi to Mehandipur Balaji?

The quickest route uses NE4, the new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which has transformed this drive with its smooth, high-speed, access-controlled design, bringing Balaji within about four and a quarter hours. The temple sits just off the Jaipur-Agra national highway, about 3 km from Balaji Mod, so it is easy to reach once you are on the right road.

At around 250 km it is a longer journey than from Jaipur or Agra, but the expressway makes it comfortable, with good fuel and food stops along the way. The final stretch into the temple town can get busy with pilgrim traffic, especially on the auspicious days, so allow a little extra time near the temple itself and be prepared for crowds and parking a short walk away. A driver who knows the route and the parking arrangements makes the last leg much easier after the long drive.

Is Mehandipur Balaji a day trip from Delhi?

It can be, but it is a long one. At around 250 km and four and a half hours each way, a Delhi to Mehandipur Balaji day trip means nine or more hours of driving, so it works only if you leave very early, before dawn and are content with a fairly quick darshan before the long drive back. Many determined Delhi devotees do exactly this, especially for a vow or a specific wish.

For a more relaxed visit, though, an overnight trip is far better, letting you reach in good time, take an unhurried darshan and rest before returning. Better still, since Balaji lies close to Jaipur, on the Jaipur-Agra highway, you can combine it with a Rajasthan or Golden Triangle trip, visiting the temple on the way to or from Jaipur rather than as a return trip from Delhi. This is by far the most rewarding way for Delhi travellers to include Balaji, turning a tiring nine-hour round drive into a natural part of a wider journey and it is the approach we usually recommend for families and older pilgrims.

How to reach Mehandipur Balaji by train and bus

Besides driving, there are good public transport options:

  • By train: the nearest railway station is Bandikui Junction, about 35 to 40 km from the temple, well connected to Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and other cities, with Dausa station another option a little further away. From the station, taxis and shared local transport reach the temple in under an hour.

  • By bus: Rajasthan Roadways and private buses run from Delhi towards Jaipur and Dausa, from where local transport reaches Balaji, with some direct and many connecting services.

For most visitors from Delhi, though, a car or taxi is the simplest and most comfortable choice, letting you go door to door and set your own pace, which is especially helpful for families, elderly pilgrims or groups travelling together over this longer distance.

Where is Mehandipur Balaji and what is it known for?

Mehandipur Balaji temple is in the village of Mehandipur, in the Dausa district of Rajasthan, near the border with Karauli, right on the Jaipur-Agra highway about 3 km from Balaji Mod. It is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, worshipped here as Balaji, the childhood form of Hanuman, since Bal means child and the temple also enshrines two other deities, Shri Pretraj Sarkar and Shri Bhairav Dev. Unlike many such shrines set in the countryside, Balaji stands within a busy town that has grown up around the pilgrimage.

The temple is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in all of Rajasthan, ranked alongside the great shrines of Salasar and Khatu Shyam and it is famous above all as a place of faith and healing. Devotees come from across India with deep belief in the temple's spiritual power, seeking blessings, peace of mind and relief from their troubles, difficulties and distress. For many, it is not a casual visit but a deeply personal journey of faith, surrender and hope, undertaken with great sincerity. The temple is at its busiest on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the days of Lord Balaji, when large crowds of devotees gather from near and far, including many from Delhi and the surrounding region.

What to expect and the temple's customs

Mehandipur Balaji is a serious place of pilgrimage with a powerful, deeply devotional atmosphere and its own long-standing customs, quite unlike an ordinary temple visit. Because it draws people in states of deep faith and hope and because its rituals are unique, it helps to know what to expect and how to visit respectfully so that your visit is smooth and you do not unintentionally cause offence:

  • An intense atmosphere: the temple is known for its unique rituals and its very intense, deeply emotional atmosphere, which some visitors find overwhelming or distressing. It is a place of profound faith rather than a casual sightseeing stop and it may not suit very young children or those who are especially sensitive, so it helps to know this before you go.

  • The arzi offering: the customary offering or arzi, a specific prasad prepared for the purpose, is available from the many shops just outside the temple and offered to the deities. The shopkeepers and temple staff will guide you on what to buy and how to offer it.

  • The temple's prasad customs: the temple has particular, long-standing traditions around its prasad and how it is treated, which devotees follow carefully, so simply take the lead from those around you and the temple staff rather than worrying about the details in advance.

  • No photography inside: photography is not allowed inside the temple, out of respect for the deities and the devotees, so keep your camera and phone put away.

  • Dress and conduct: dress modestly and conservatively as at any temple, remove footwear where required and keep your belongings secure in the crowds.

  • Approach with respect: above all, be respectful of the devotees, their faith and the temple's customs at all times and observe quietly rather than staring or intruding.

Visiting with an open, respectful mind and ideally with someone who understands the customs, makes for a smooth and meaningful visit.

Mehandipur Balaji temple timings

The temple is generally open from early morning until the evening, closing later in summer and a little earlier in winter, so plan to arrive with time for darshan, especially given the longer drive from Delhi.

Photography

Not allowed inside

Timings can change and vary by season and festival, so reconfirm before you travel and arrive early on the busy Tuesdays and Saturdays. Note that photography is not permitted inside and that the temple can be extremely crowded on the auspicious days, so plan your visit accordingly and keep young or sensitive members of your group close by.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Mehandipur Balaji is October to March, when the weather is pleasant for the long journey and the visit. The temple is open year-round and Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered especially auspicious, drawing the largest crowds, so a weekday visit outside these days is calmer if you prefer fewer people.

Summers, from April to June, are hot for the long drive, so travel early in the day and carry plenty of water. Whenever you go, an early start from Delhi beats both the heat and the day's crowds and lets you return at a comfortable hour or continue on to Jaipur if you are combining the visit with a wider trip. If your visit is tied to a vow or a wish, many devotees choose the auspicious days despite the crowds, while those who simply wish to have a calmer darshan are better off on a weekday.

Combining Mehandipur Balaji with your trip

Because Mehandipur Balaji lies close to Jaipur, on the Jaipur-Agra highway, it combines well with a Rajasthan or Golden Triangle trip from Delhi, which is often the most rewarding way to visit:
