Jaipur Itinerary: The Perfect 2 to 3 Days

I was born in Delhi and for 11 years I have run the Delhi, Agra and Jaipur circuit, so I have planned this exact trip more times than I can count. The mistake I see in most Jaipur itineraries is geography: they bounce you between the hilltop forts in the north and the walled city in the centre, so you spend half your holiday in traffic. This plan fixes that. Day one stays in the Amber hills, day two stays in the Pink City and day three does the clever thing, it carries you towards Agra with a stepwell stop on the way. Here is the shape of it, then the hour-by-hour.

The plan at a glance:

Day 1: The Amber hills

Spend your whole first day on the north side of the city, where the forts are. Everything today is within a short drive of Amber, so you never cross town.

• Morning.  Leave by 8:00 am and go straight to Amber Fort as it opens. Give it two to three hours: the ramparts, the courtyards and the mirrored Sheesh Mahal. Walk up or take a jeep rather than an elephant ride, it is kinder and just as scenic. Right beside it, drop into Panna Meena ka Kund, the perfectly symmetrical stepwell, for a five-minute photo.

• Late morning.  If you like forts, climb to Jaigarh Fort directly above Amber to see Jaivana, once the largest cannon on wheels in the world and huge Aravalli views. If you would rather pace yourself, skip it and head back towards the city.

• Afternoon.  Break for a proper Rajasthani lunch, then stop at Jal Mahal, the palace that floats in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, for photos from the bank on your way back.

• Evening.  Drive up to Nahargarh Fort for the classic Jaipur sunset over the whole city, then dinner at the fort's Padao cafe or back in town.

Abhay's tip: Buy the Jaipur composite ticket at the Amber Fort counter first thing. It covers Amber, Nahargarh and tomorrow's Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar on one ticket, valid two days, so you skip four separate queues.

Day 2: The walled Pink City

Today stays inside the old walled city, where the palaces, the observatory and the bazaars sit within walking or short-rickshaw distance of each other.

• Morning.  Start at Hawa Mahal between 9:00 and 10:00 am, when the rising sun lights the pink honeycomb facade. Photograph it from a rooftop cafe opposite, then walk to the City Palace, the living heart of royal Jaipur and give it a couple of hours for the courtyards, the Chandra Mahal and the famous Peacock Gate.

• Late morning.  Step next door to Jantar Mantar, the UNESCO observatory of giant stone instruments, including the world's largest sundial. This one genuinely rewards a guide, the instruments look abstract until someone shows you how they work.

• Afternoon.  Head south to the Albert Hall Museum, the grand old museum in Ram Niwas Garden, then eat your way around Masala Chowk, the open-air street-food court right nearby.

• Evening.  Choose your mood: shop the walled-city bazaars, Johari Bazaar for jewellery and Bapu Bazaar for textiles and jootis or head out to Chokhi Dhani for a Rajasthani cultural evening and an unlimited thali. Stop at the floodlit Patrika Gate for photos on the way.

Abhay's tip: City Palace is privately run and is not on the composite ticket, so budget for it separately. If the royal story pulls you in, the pricier palace-tour tickets open rooms the standard entry does not.

Day 3: The clever day, onward towards Agra

Two days genuinely cover Jaipur. So the smartest third day is not more of the same city, it is to point the car towards Agra and see something most travelers miss on the way.

• The best option.  Check out and drive towards Agra, stopping at Chand Baori in Abhaneri, about 95 km from Jaipur and right on the Jaipur to Agra highway. It is one of the largest and deepest stepwells in India, 3,500 perfectly symmetrical steps down 13 levels, built over a thousand years ago and used as a film location for The Dark Knight Rises. It is open from sunrise to sunset and takes under an hour. From there you continue to Agra for the Taj Mahal, which is exactly how I run our Delhi, Agra and Jaipur tour.

• If you are staying in Jaipur.  Do Chand Baori as a three-and-back day trip, about two hours each way or stay closer to town with the Galtaji monkey temple in the hills and the marble Gaitore royal cenotaphs.

• If you want to slow down.  Sleep in, photograph Patrika Gate and Gaitore in soft morning light, then take a block-printing or Rajasthani cooking workshop and spend the rest of the day in the bazaars.

Abhay's tip: Day three is where Jaipur naturally flows into the rest of the Golden Triangle. If Agra and Delhi are on your list, do not treat Jaipur as a dead end, continue the loop on the full Golden Triangle Tour and let the stepwell be your bridge to the Taj.

How the composite ticket works

Rajasthan Tourism sells one composite ticket that bundles Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh Fort and Albert Hall, valid for two consecutive days and it costs less than paying at each gate. In 2026 it is roughly ₹300 for Indians and ₹1,000 for foreign tourists, though the exact price shifts with revisions, so confirm at the first counter. Buy it at your first stop on Day 1. The one exception, again, is City Palace, which is privately run and ticketed separately.

Best time and getting around

Visit between October and March, when Jaipur is pleasant and clear; April to June is punishingly hot for fort-climbing. Get around by private car with a driver if you can, since the sights are spread across hills and old city or by app cab and auto-rickshaw if you are budgeting, agreeing the fare before you set off. Wear real shoes; there is a lot of stone and a lot of steps.

What I tell friends before they go

If you take one thing from me, take this: respect the map. Do the hills on one day and the walled city on the next and Jaipur feels calm and generous instead of a scramble. Get to Amber at eight, watch a sunset from Nahargarh, buy the composite ticket at the first gate and give yourself a real evening in the bazaars. Two days done well beat three days done in a rush.
