What is Jaswant Thada?

Often described as the Taj Mahal of Marwar, Jaswant Thada is a breathtaking 19th-century royal cenotaph made entirely of translucent white Makrana marble. It is perched quietly on a rocky hill overlooking a small lake, just one kilometre down the road from the colossal Mehrangarh Fort and offers a stark, peaceful contrast to the rugged sandstone military architecture of the fort above.

Unlike many monuments that feel like museums, Jaswant Thada remains a sacred ancestral space, managed by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust and it serves as the official royal cremation ground for the Rathore rulers of Jodhpur. This living, sacred role gives it a special atmosphere, part memorial, part temple, part serene lakeside garden. It is the natural companion to a visit to the fort and one of the essential sights of Jodhpur, as our wider travel guides cover the city and the region.

The history and the glowing marble

The memorial was built in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh to honour his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, a beloved ruler credited with modernising Jodhpur by bringing railways, irrigation systems and justice reforms. It stands as a son's loving tribute to a reforming father, which is part of its gentle, reverent character.

The structure's most magical feature is its marble. It is built from the same elite Makrana marble used for the Taj Mahal in Agra and the marble sheets here are carved so thin and polished so finely that the walls emit a warm, golden, translucent glow when the sun's rays pass directly through them. This luminous quality, unusual even among India's marble monuments, is what earns Jaswant Thada its nickname and makes an early-morning or late-afternoon visit, when the light is low and direct, so rewarding. The architecture blends Rajputana and Mughal styles, with elaborate stone domes, scalloped arches and incredibly intricate jali or marble lattice, screens that filter the desert breeze and cast delicate geometric shadows across the interior floor.

What to see inside the grounds

Jaswant Thada is more than a single building; its grounds hold a cluster of beautiful features worth exploring at a relaxed pace.

Feature

What to see

The main temple hall

Twelve grand pillars around the central cenotaph, under a domed hall lit by a chandelier

The portrait gallery

Rare historic portraits and paintings of the Marwar rulers

The royal cremation grounds

Multi-tiered gardens, carved gazebos and three other royal cenotaphs

Devkund Lake

A tranquil lake at the front, mirroring the white monument

The main temple hall is designed like a traditional Hindu temple and daily rituals and ancestral prayers are still performed there; inside, twelve grand pillars surround the central marble cenotaph beneath a towering dome lit by a massive chandelier. The interior walls serve as an orientation space, hung with rare historic portraits and paintings of the Marwar rulers. Beyond the main pavilion lie beautifully manicured, multi-tiered gardens, a collection of smaller, intricately carved gazebos and three other royal cenotaphs commemorating subsequent Jodhpur rulers. At the front, below the steps, sits the tranquil Devkund Lake, which often hosts local waterfowl and acts as a natural mirror, making the white monument appear to float over the water.

Jaswant Thada timings and tickets

Jaswant Thada is open every single day from 9 AM to 5 PM and the entry fees, set by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, are modest. The rates below were correct at the time of writing and should be reconfirmed, as fees can change.

Category

Fee (at the time of writing)

Indian visitors

₹50 per person

International visitors

₹100 per person

Still or video camera

₹50

Official guide

From ₹150 (groups of 1 to 4) up to ₹300 (larger groups)

Allow roughly forty-five minutes to an hour to explore the interiors and the lakeside gardens peacefully. The modest ticket makes it an easy addition to a fort visit and a guide, if you wish, adds helpful context to the royal history and the architecture. Treat the figures as a guide and reconfirm the current rates, especially the camera and guide charges, as these are adjusted from time to time.

Best time to visit Jaswant Thada

The best time to visit is the cool season from about October to March, which provides pleasant walking weather for the gardens and the lakeside steps. For the most spectacular experience, come in the early morning, just as it opens, to see the marble catch the soft sunrise and glow at its most translucent, which is also the best light for photography.

The summer, from April to June, is very hot in this desert city, so an early visit is best then, while the monsoon, from July to September, brings some relief and a little green to the gardens. Within the day, early morning and late afternoon are lovely both for the quality of light on the marble and for the quieter, more contemplative atmosphere, before or after the busiest hours.

How to reach Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada sits right on the Mehrangarh Fort road, about one kilometre below the fort, so it is very easy to reach and, above all, to combine with a fort visit.

Information

Location

On the fort road, about 1 km below Mehrangarh Fort

From the fort

A short drive or walk down the hill

By taxi or auto-rickshaw

Direct to the monument, widely available in the city

Best approach

Visit the fort first, then walk down to the cenotaph

Because it is so close to the fort, the ideal approach is to explore the intense history of Mehrangarh first and then come down to Jaswant Thada to decompress and sit by the peaceful lakeside gardens. A private car with a driver makes the whole fort-and-cenotaph circuit effortless and from the blue old city it is only a short ride up to the fort road. We usually build both into a single, well-paced morning in Jodhpur.

Tips for visiting Jaswant Thada

  • Visit the fort first, then walk down to Jaswant Thada to unwind by the lake; it is right on the fort road.

  • Come early in the morning to see the marble glow translucent in the soft sunrise light.

  • Allow forty-five minutes to an hour for the interiors and the lakeside gardens.

  • Remove your shoes before stepping onto the main marble platform, as the hall is a functional temple; slip-on shoes help.

  • Head to the red-sandstone steps for a superb, uncrowded view across the lake to the blue city and the fort.

  • Visit in the cool season, October to March, for the most pleasant walking weather.

  • Reconfirm the camera and guide fees, as these modest charges are revised from time to time.

The perfect panorama

One local tip is worth its own mention: the red-sandstone steps leading up to the monument offer one of the finest and most uncrowded viewpoints in all of Jodhpur. From here, you can look out across Devkund Lake to capture the city's signature blue houses, with the massive Mehrangarh Fort towering on the cliffs right above.

It is the kind of composition that sums up the Blue City in a single frame, the serene white cenotaph and its lake in the foreground, the sea of blue houses beyond and the great fort crowning the skyline. Give yourself a little time on these steps, especially in the soft morning or late-afternoon light and you will come away with some of the best photographs of your whole Rajasthan trip.

What to expect

A visit to Jaswant Thada is a serene, uplifting contrast to the might of Mehrangarh, a glowing white-marble cenotaph set among manicured gardens beside a mirror-like lake. You can expect translucent Makrana marble that catches the sun, intricate jali screens casting delicate shadows, a temple hall of twelve pillars under a chandelier-lit dome, a gallery of royal portraits, smaller carved gazebos and further cenotaphs in the gardens and one of the finest panoramas of the blue city and the fort from its sandstone steps.

As the sacred royal cremation ground of the Rathores, still used for ancestral prayers, it carries a quiet, reverent atmosphere that rewards an unhurried visit. Combined with the fort just above it, Jaswant Thada completes the essential heart of Jodhpur and leaves most visitors with a sense of calm and beauty that lingers long after they leave.
