What is Mehrangarh Fort?

Mehrangarh Fort is a vast 15th-century citadel perched on a rocky hill about 122 metres or some 400 feet, above the city of Jodhpur, with massive walls rising up to around 36 metres high in places. Founded in 1459 and expanded over the following five centuries by successive rulers of Marwar, it is today one of the largest and most magnificent forts in India, maintained as a living cultural and museum centre by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust.

The fort is not a ruin but a superbly preserved and presented monument, with grand palaces ornate halls, a fine museum and sweeping views, all reached by a series of great gates winding up the hillside. It is the undisputed highlight of any visit to Jodhpur and for many travellers one of the most memorable sights in all of Rajasthan. Our things to do in Jodhpur guide places it at the top of the city's attractions and it anchors any Jodhpur itinerary.

History of Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh was founded in May 1459 by Rao Jodha, the Rathore Rajput ruler who established Jodhpur, when he shifted his capital from nearby Mandore to this more defensible rocky cliff known as Bhakurcheeria, the Mountain of Birds. The new fort gave its name and its protection, to the city that grew below it.

The name Mehrangarh is traditionally understood as the Fort of the Sun, reflecting the Rathore clan's legendary descent from Surya, the Sun God. What began as a Rajput stronghold was built up and embellished over roughly five centuries by successive Maharajas, blending early Rajput military architecture with later, more decorative Mughal influences in its palaces and halls. Today the fort remains closely tied to the royal family of Jodhpur and is cared for by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust under the family's patronage, which is a large part of why it is so beautifully preserved.

Mehrangarh Fort ticket price

Mehrangarh is a ticketed museum, with different rates for domestic and international visitors and a few optional extras such as the lift and parking. The prices below are indicative and were correct at the time of writing, but entry fees change from time to time, so please reconfirm the current rates on the official fort website or at the ticket counter before your visit.

Ticket

Price (at the time of writing)

Domestic adult

₹200 per person

Domestic student (with valid ID)

₹100 per person

International visitor

₹600 to ₹800 per person (usually includes the audio guide)

Lift / elevator (one way)

₹50 per person

Vehicle parking

₹60 for the full day

The audio guide, typically included for international visitors, is excellent and well worth using, as it brings the fort's history and rooms to life. The lift is a one-way ride up to the top decks and is especially recommended for senior citizens or anyone who would rather not climb, though walking up through the gates is part of the experience if you are able. Always treat these figures as a guide and reconfirm, since we never want you caught out by a changed rate.

Mehrangarh Fort timings

The fort and museum are open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. Allow a good two to three hours to explore properly, taking in the palaces, the museum and the ramparts and a little longer if you enjoy the audio guide and the views.

How to reach Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh sits on its hilltop directly above the old blue city of Jodhpur, so it is central and easy to reach from almost anywhere in town. The fort has its own road winding up to the main gate and a parking area and most visitors arrive by taxi, auto-rickshaw or private car.

From

Route

From the old city

A short ride or a steep walk up to the fort gates

By taxi or auto-rickshaw

Direct to the main gate parking; widely available in town

By private car

Up the fort road to the main gate parking lot

On foot

A walk up through the old-city lanes for the energetic

If you are staying in the blue old city, the fort looms right above you and is only a short ride away, which is one of the reasons we usually suggest basing yourself there, as our where to stay in Jodhpur guide explains. A private car with a driver is the most comfortable way to reach the fort and move on to the other sights, especially in the warmer months.

The palaces and gates inside Mehrangarh

The great pleasure of Mehrangarh lies in its superbly preserved palaces and the mighty gates you pass through on the way up, each with its own history and beauty. Here are the highlights to look out for inside.

Highlight

What to see

Phool Mahal (Flower Palace)

The Maharajas' pleasure palace, glittering with gold leaf and floral paintings

Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace)

Stained-glass windows and hidden alcoves where queens heard the court

Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace)

Walls adorned with intricate, glittering mirror work

Chamunda Mataji Temple

Loha Pol (Iron Gate)

Fateh Pol

A gate commemorating historic triumphs

Approaching the fort, you pass through a succession of great gates or pols, winding up the hillside, of which Jai Pol, Loha Pol and Fateh Pol are the most famous. At Loha Pol you will see the small sati handprints of royal widows who, by the custom of the time, immolated themselves on their husbands' funeral pyres, a moving and sombre reminder of the past. Inside, the palaces are a feast of Rajput and Mughal artistry, from the gold and flowers of Phool Mahal to the mirror work of Sheesh Mahal and the Chamunda Mataji temple near the upper courtyard remains an active and revered shrine.

The Mehrangarh Museum

Within the fort, the Mehrangarh Museum is one of the finest in Rajasthan, beautifully presented across the old palace rooms and halls. It houses rich royal collections that tell the story of Marwar and its rulers in vivid detail.

The displays include exquisite miniature paintings ornate royal palanquins, richly decorated turbans and a wide array of decorative arts, alongside an extensive armoury of historical swords, shields and firearms. Together they give a wonderful sense of the wealth, artistry and martial heritage of the Rathore court. With the audio guide to lead you through, the museum turns a visit to Mehrangarh from a look at a fort into a real journey through the history of Jodhpur and it is worth taking your time over.

What to see near Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh sits at the heart of a cluster of lovely sights, so it is easy to combine with other attractions for a full day. Several are within walking distance or a short ride of the fort itself.

Close by is the exquisite Jaswant Thada, the white-marble royal cenotaph built in 1906, a short distance from the fort and a serene contrast to its might. At the foot of the hill lies the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, an ecological restoration area showcasing the native arid flora of the region, with lovely walking trails and fort views, while just below the ramparts is the restored 18th-century terraced Chokhelao Garden. Beyond these, the blue old city, the Clock Tower market, Umaid Bhawan Palace and the Toorji stepwell complete the picture and our Jodhpur 2 day itinerary guide ties them all into an easy plan.

Best time to visit Mehrangarh Fort

The fort can be visited year round, but the best time to enjoy it and Jodhpur in general, is the cool season from about October to March, when exploring the ramparts and climbing through the gates is comfortable and pleasant and the light over the blue city is at its loveliest. Our best time to visit Jodhpur guide covers the seasons in detail.

The summer, from April to June, is very hot in this desert city, so a fort visit then is best made early in the morning, while the monsoon, from July to September, brings some relief and a little green to the surrounding landscape. Whatever the season, an early start is the key to enjoying Mehrangarh at its best, before the heat and the crowds build.

Tips for visiting Mehrangarh Fort

  • Arrive early in the morning for cooler air, softer light and fewer crowds.

  • Allow a good two to three hours to see the palaces, museum and ramparts properly.

  • Use the audio guide, usually included for international visitors, to bring the fort to life.

  • Consider the lift up to the top decks if climbing is difficult, especially for senior citizens.

  • Treat the ticket prices as a guide and reconfirm the current rates before you visit.

  • Combine the fort with nearby Jaswant Thada, the Rao Jodha park and the blue old city.

  • Visit in the cooler months, October to March, for the most comfortable experience.

At the time of writing, museum entry is about ₹200 per person for domestic adults and ₹100 for domestic students with valid ID, while international visitors pay roughly ₹600 to ₹800 per person, usually including the audio guide. The lift up to the top decks is about ₹50 per person one way and full-day vehicle parking is around ₹60. These rates change from time to time, so always reconfirm the current prices on the official fort website or at the ticket counter before your visit.

Mehrangarh Fort and its museum are open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. It is best to allow a good two to three hours to explore the palaces, the museum and the ramparts properly and a little longer if you enjoy using the audio guide and taking in the views. Reconfirm timings before a special trip, as they can vary on occasion.

Most visitors need about two to three hours to enjoy Mehrangarh properly, taking in the great gates, the palaces such as Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal and Sheesh Mahal, the excellent museum and the ramparts with their sweeping views. If you use the audio guide and linger over the collections and the views, you could easily spend longer. Because it is the single greatest sight in Jodhpur, it is worth giving it unhurried time rather than rushing, ideally as the main focus of your first morning in the city.
