What is Paliwal Park?
Paliwal Park is a sprawling public garden of around 70 acres in the Civil Lines and Sanjay Place area of Agra and the city's best-loved green space. With its central lake, lawns, tree-lined paths, walking tracks and recreation areas, it serves as the green lung of Agra, a welcome contrast to the bustle of the old city and the monuments and a favourite spot for morning walkers, families and anyone wanting a quiet hour outdoors.
Originally laid out as Hewitt Park during the British colonial era, it was later renamed in honour of Shri Krishna Dutta Paliwal, the first Finance Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Today it is maintained jointly by the Agra Development Authority and the Nagar Nigam and it has been steadily developed with new features over the years, from fitness facilities to a Garden of Knowledge and a musical fountain. For visitors it offers a glimpse of everyday Agra life and a pleasant break between sightseeing, as our wider travel guides cover more of what to see in the city.
Paliwal Park timings and entry fee
The park is open daily from 7 AM to 8:30 PM. Early-morning walkers enjoy free entry before 9 AM, after which a small nominal fee applies, with additional charges for vehicle parking and for boating on the lake. The details below were correct at the time of writing, but small civic fees can change, so please reconfirm locally.
Detail | Information (at the time of writing) |
Open | Daily, 7 AM to 8:30 PM |
Entry before 9 AM | Free (for morning walkers) |
Entry after 9 AM | A nominal fee of around ₹5 to ₹10 |
Vehicle parking | Charged separately |
Boating | Charged separately |
Because entry is free in the early morning and only a nominal fee later, Paliwal Park is an easy and inexpensive place to visit. The early morning is also the most pleasant and popular time, when the walking tracks fill with local residents taking their exercise and the air is cool and fresh. Treat the small fees as a guide and reconfirm on the day, as civic charges are occasionally revised.
How to reach Paliwal Park
Paliwal Park sits on Pandit Motilal Nehru Road in the Civil Lines district, a central and well-connected part of Agra close to the Sanjay Place commercial hub, so it is easy to reach by taxi, auto-rickshaw or private car from anywhere in the city.
Detail | Information |
Address | Pandit Motilal Nehru Rd, Civil Lines, Agra, Uttar Pradesh 282003 |
Area | Civil Lines, near Sanjay Place |
By taxi or auto-rickshaw | Direct to the park; widely available across Agra |
Accessibility | Wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking options |
The Civil Lines location means the park is close to many of the city's offices, colleges and markets and it is well served by local transport. Auto-rickshaws and taxis will know Paliwal Park and it is only a short ride from most hotels in the central part of Agra. A private car with a driver makes it easy to drop in on the park between visits to the great monuments.
The lake and boating
At the heart of Paliwal Park lies a central artificial lake, one of its most attractive features, which supports ducks and, in the cooler months, seasonal migratory birds and offers boating for visitors. Drifting on the water or simply sitting by the lake is one of the simplest pleasures of the park.
The lake is at its best in winter, from about November to March, when migratory birds arrive and the surrounding vegetation is lush and green, making it a lovely spot for a gentle hour. If the park's birdlife appeals to you, Agra has a dedicated wetland nearby and our guide to the Keetham Lake and Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary covers that larger haven for migratory species just outside the city. Within Paliwal Park, boating is available for a separate charge and it is a pleasant way to enjoy the water, especially with children.
Fitness, recreation and families
Paliwal Park is as much a place for activity as for relaxation and it is especially popular with Agra's morning fitness crowd. Its facilities make it a genuine community space, used by residents of all ages throughout the day.
Feature | What is there |
Walking and jogging | A dedicated paved walking and jogging track, busy at dawn |
Open-air gym | Outdoor gym equipment and dedicated yoga platforms |
Children | Play areas with swings and slides |
Sports | Open sports spaces, including areas used for cricket |
Evenings | A musical fountain as an evening attraction |
For families, the children's play areas with their swings and slides are a big draw, while fitness enthusiasts have the walking and jogging track, open-air gym equipment and yoga platforms. There are open spaces used for sports including cricket and in the evening the musical fountain adds a touch of spectacle. It all makes Paliwal Park a lively, welcoming place that reflects the everyday life of the city.
The Garden of Knowledge and landmarks
One of the park's more distinctive features is the Garden of Knowledge or Gyanodaya, an open-air educational enclave featuring sculptures and installations of ancient Indian scholars, scientists and freedom fighters. It is a thoughtful and unusual addition that makes a stroll through the park both pleasant and quietly educational and is popular with students and families.
The park also sits among and partly houses, some of Agra's legacy institutions and landmarks. Close by or within the grounds are parts of the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University campus and the historic Town Hall Library and City Museum, which has been under renovation. Artistic wall murals around the park depict old Agra neighbourhoods such as Kinari Bazaar and Raja Mandi, adding local colour and a sense of the city's heritage. Nearby landmarks include the Sanjay Place commercial hub, St. John's College and the Ashok Cosmos Mall, so the park is well placed within the modern life of the city.
Best time to visit Paliwal Park
The best time to visit Paliwal Park is the winter season, from about November to March, when the weather is pleasant, the vegetation is lush and green and migratory birds visit the central lake, making the whole park at its most beautiful. This also happens to be the best season for visiting Agra and the Taj Mahal in general, as our guide to the best time to visit the Taj Mahal explains.
The summer, from April to June, is very hot in Agra, so a park visit then is best confined to the early morning or the evening, while the monsoon, from July to September, brings welcome greenery. During the day, the early morning is the most pleasant and popular time, cool and fresh and free to enter before 9 AM, while the evening, with the musical fountain, is lovely too. Whatever the season, Paliwal Park is a refreshing green break from a day of sightseeing.
What to combine with your visit
Because Paliwal Park is a quick and easy stop rather than a half-day sight, it combines naturally with Agra's great monuments and gardens for a fuller day. Its central Civil Lines location keeps it close to much of the city.
A visit pairs well with the riverside Mughal garden of Mehtab Bagh, famous for its sunset view of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna and with the grand Jama Masjid of Agra in the old city. A little further out lie the magnificent Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra and the red-sandstone Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, while the riverside cenotaph of Jaswant Singh ki Chhatri is another quiet corner of the city. Together with the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort, these make Agra a far richer destination than a single afternoon allows.
Tips for visiting Paliwal Park
Come early in the morning for the coolest, freshest air and free entry before 9 AM.
Visit in winter, November to March, when the park is greenest and migratory birds arrive.
Allow about one to two hours, longer if you plan to boat or relax by the lake.
Try boating on the central lake, charged separately, especially with children.
Look out for the Garden of Knowledge and the wall murals of old Agra for a touch of culture.
Stay for the evening musical fountain if you visit later in the day.
Treat the small entry and boating fees as a guide and reconfirm locally, as civic charges change.
What to expect
A visit to Paliwal Park is a relaxed, refreshing break from the grandeur of Agra's Mughal monuments, a chance to see the city at its most everyday and green. You can expect a sprawling garden of lawns and tree-lined paths, a central lake with ducks, winter migratory birds and boating, busy walking and jogging tracks, open-air gym and yoga spaces, children's play areas, the thoughtful Garden of Knowledge with its sculptures, wall murals of old Agra and a musical fountain in the evening, all in the leafy Civil Lines district.
As an attraction it is modest and local rather than monumental and that is exactly its charm, a genuine community space that offers a calm and pleasant hour between the great sights. Combined with Mehtab Bagh, the Jama Masjid and Agra's other monuments, a stop at Paliwal Park rounds out a visit to the city and shows you a side of Agra that most hurried tourists never see.

Paliwal Park is on Pandit Motilal Nehru Road in the Civil Lines district of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, close to the Sanjay Place commercial hub. It is a central and well-connected part of the city, near landmarks such as St. John's College and the Ashok Cosmos Mall and easy to reach by taxi, auto-rickshaw or private car from anywhere in Agra. Its central location makes it a simple stop to add between visits to the great monuments.
Paliwal Park is open daily from 7 AM to 8:30 PM. The early morning, before 9 AM, is free for walkers and is the most pleasant and popular time to visit, when the air is cool and fresh and the tracks fill with local residents taking their exercise. The park stays open into the evening, when the musical fountain is an added attraction. Timings are generally consistent, but it is worth reconfirming locally before a special visit.
Entry is free before 9 AM for morning walkers. After 9 AM, a small nominal fee applies, which was around ₹5 to ₹10 at the time of writing and there are additional charges for vehicle parking and for boating on the lake. These are modest civic fees that make the park an inexpensive place to visit, but small charges like these are occasionally revised, so treat the figures as a guide and reconfirm on the day at the park.
The park was originally laid out as Hewitt Park during the British colonial era and was later renamed in honour of Shri Krishna Dutta Paliwal, the first Finance Minister of Uttar Pradesh, hence Paliwal Park. It is maintained today jointly by the Agra Development Authority and the Nagar Nigam. The renaming reflects the park's place in the civic life and history of Agra and the grounds also house and sit among several legacy institutions of the city.
