Akshardham is the most-visited modern temple in Delhi, and the one where a little planning makes the biggest difference. It is a huge complex of intricately carved stone, with exhibitions, a boat ride and an evening musical fountain show, and it deserves half a day. It is also the strictest site in the city on what you can bring, and it runs on cash, so turning up unprepared costs you time. The centrepiece is the main monument, a carved sandstone and marble temple built without structural steel, covered in thousands of figures, and set in landscaped gardens. Around it, the ticketed exhibitions use film, dioramas and a boat ride to tell stories from Indian culture and the life of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The Yagnapurush Kund, a large stepwell, becomes the stage for the evening water show. There is a big vegetarian food court on site. Between the temple, the exhibitions and the show, a full visit runs three to four hours, or more with the evening show.

Swaminarayan Akshardham was built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and opened in 2005, the vision of the spiritual leader Pramukh Swami Maharaj. It was carved by thousands of artisans in the tradition of ancient Indian temple building, in sandstone and marble and without structural steel, and it holds a Guinness World Record as a large comprehensive Hindu temple. Though modern, it is designed to reflect India's older architectural and spiritual traditions, which is why it reads as timeless rather than new.
