Humayun's Tomb: Timings, Tickets & History 2026

If you are travelling on to Agra, Humayun's Tomb is the best possible warm-up for the Taj Mahal, and if you are not, it is still one of the calmest, most rewarding stops in Delhi. This red sandstone and marble tomb, set in a formal Persian garden, was the first of its kind in India, and you can see the whole idea of the Taj taking shape here half a century early. It is quieter than the forts, easy to reach, and worth an unhurried hour and a half. Here is how to visit.

Humayun's Tomb is open all seven days of the week, from sunrise to sunset, roughly 6 AM to 6 PM, with no weekly closure. Early morning is the best time: the light is soft on the red sandstone, the gardens are quiet, and it is cool enough to walk the whole complex in comfort. Late afternoon is the next best, and both beat the middle of the day for light and crowds.

Fees are set by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and were as follows as of July 2026.

Some listings quote the Indian fee at Rs 40, so confirm at the counter or on the ASI portal. Book online to skip the queue. Confirm the current rate before you travel, since ASI fees change.

Stand at the entrance and the resemblance is immediate. Humayun's Tomb introduced to India the ideas the Taj Mahal would later make famous: a domed mausoleum of red sandstone and white marble, raised on a high platform, set precisely at the centre of a Charbagh, the four-quadrant Persian garden divided by water channels. It was built roughly seventy years before the Taj, and Shah Jahan's architects clearly learned from it. Seeing this first, then the Baby Taj in Agra, then the Taj Mahal itself, is the ideal sequence for understanding how Mughal tomb architecture reached its peak.

The tomb sits at the centre of a walled garden of about thirty acres, its paths and water channels drawing your eye straight to the great double dome. Inside, the high central chamber holds Humayun's cenotaph, with those of other Mughal royals in side rooms, since it became auspicious to be buried near the emperor. The complex holds more than the main tomb: the older, blue-tiled tomb of Isa Khan near the entrance predates Humayun's, and the small barber's tomb sits within the garden. Give yourself time to walk the garden itself, which is part of the design rather than a setting for it.

Humayun, the second Mughal emperor, died in 1556. His tomb was commissioned by his widow, Bega Begum, also known as Haji Begum, and built through the 1560s and early 1570s. She chose a Persian architect, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, whose design brought the Persian garden-tomb tradition to India for the first time. The result set the template for Mughal mausoleums that culminated in the Taj Mahal. Humayun's Tomb was among the earliest Indian sites recognised by UNESCO, inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1993, and it has since been carefully restored.

Humayun's Tomb is in the Nizamuddin area of New Delhi, on Mathura Road. The nearest metro stations are JLN Stadium and Jangpura, each a short auto-rickshaw ride away, and the metro is the simplest way to reach it. It pairs naturally on the same day with the Qutub Minar and a drive past India Gate on the New and South Delhi route.

Carry a photo ID; foreign visitors need a passport. Large bags and food are best left behind, and there are security checks at the gate. Handheld photography is allowed and this is one of Delhi's most photogenic monuments, though tripods and drones are not permitted. The gardens are easy to walk, but the tomb chamber has steps. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water in the warmer months.
