India Gate Delhi: Timings, History & Best Time 2026

India Gate is where New Delhi comes to relax, and it is best understood not as a monument you tour but as a place you spend an evening. The great arch anchors Kartavya Path, the ceremonial avenue that runs to the President's residence, and after dark it is floodlit while families picnic on the lawns and ice-cream sellers work the crowd. It is free, always open, and a short drive from the New Delhi monuments, so it slots easily into the end of a sightseeing day. Here is what to know.

One thing has changed here that older guides miss. The Amar Jawan Jyoti, the eternal flame that burned under the India Gate arch for decades, was merged in January 2022 into the flame at the National War Memorial, which stands a short walk away behind India Gate. If you want to pay respects at the eternal flame, it is now at the National War Memorial, a dignified modern complex worth seeing in its own right. Under the India Gate canopy itself now stands a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, installed in 2022.

Evening, without question. Come around sunset and stay as the floodlights come on and the arch glows against the darkening sky, with the lawns at their liveliest. It is also the coolest part of the day for most of the year. Weekends are busiest and most festive; a weekday evening is calmer. In the daytime the memorial is still worth a quick stop if you are passing, but it lacks the atmosphere that makes India Gate special.

India Gate was designed by the British architect Edwin Lutyens and built between 1921 and 1931 as a memorial to the roughly 70,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The names of over 13,000 servicemen are inscribed on its surface. Modelled loosely on triumphal arches like the Arc de Triomphe, it became the ceremonial heart of Lutyens' New Delhi, and it remains the focal point of the annual Republic Day parade along Kartavya Path.

India Gate is surrounded by the green heart of New Delhi. Kartavya Path itself is a long ceremonial promenade lined with lawns and fountains, pleasant to walk in the evening. The area around it holds the National War Memorial behind the arch, and the wide avenues lead up towards Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's residence, and the government buildings on Raisina Hill. Families with children will find the lawns, the snacks and the open space an easy, welcome break from monument-heavy days.
