The trap is the same as everywhere in this trade. An operator writes 'five-star hotels' across the whole route, you picture the standard you saw in Jaipur, and you arrive in Khajuraho to a room that is nothing like it. Nobody lied. Khajuraho actually has genuinely good hotels, including a five-star by the temples and a palace; the corner gets cut on which one you are booked into, and in Orchha, where the market really is small. The word carried you past both. Ask for the property names in every city before you pay, including from us.

Beyond the three cities, honestly: Orchha, quieter than Rajasthan's headline sites. A medieval Bundela capital on the Betwa river: the Jehangir Mahal and Raja Mahal, the living Ram Raja Temple, the Chaturbhuj Temple, and the riverside chhatris at dusk. It is a genuine change of register after Rajasthan's crowds. Khajuraho, which is world-class and not optional-feeling. The Western Group with the towering Kandariya Mahadev, and the Eastern and Jain group: some of the finest temple sculpture anywhere, from the Chandela dynasty around 950 to 1050 AD. A change of pace. Central Indian temple country reads completely differently from Mughal Agra and Rajput Jaipur, which is the point of extending at all.

The Taj on a Friday. Closed to tourists every Friday, at every price. We sequence it onto another day. A cheaper ticket. Entry is Rs 1,100 for foreign nationals and Rs 50 for Indians whether you arrive from a palace or a guesthouse. We print the fees rather than bury them. Off-season Khajuraho flights. Khajuraho airport runs seasonal flights to Delhi and Varanasi that thin out in the monsoon months, roughly July to September. When they do not run, the honest exit is by train or road via Jhansi, and we plan for it rather than promise a flight that is not flying. The Madhya Pradesh road miles. Orchha to Khajuraho is about four to five hours in a car of any price. The train shortens the Agra leg; it does not delete the MP roads. An elephant ride at Amber. We do not offer it at any tier, on welfare grounds. The jeep does the climb. A private Khajuraho or Taj. Both are working, visited sites. Early timing thins the crowds; money does not empty them.

Two addresses earn naming, because in a small market they are the genuine articles. The Lalit Temple View is a five-star within 200 metres of the Western Group of temples, part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the closest luxury base to the site. And The Oberoi Rajgarh Palace is a restored 350-year-old Bundela palace on the Maniyagarh Hills, about 20 minutes from the temples and airport, near Panna National Park. The Lalit puts you beside the temples; the Oberoi is the palace-tier destination in its own right. We name whichever you book rather than letting a basic hotel stand in for either. Orchha is different: a genuinely small, heritage market, where we use the best available property and tell you exactly what it is.

Every coy tour page dances around this, so we will not. Khajuraho is famous for erotic sculpture, and travellers with children reasonably wonder what they are walking into. The honest answer: the erotic carvings are a small fraction of the whole, the temples are primarily devotional, and the sculpture as a body depicts the full range of medieval life, from music and dance to warfare and daily work. A guide gives context, and families with children visit comfortably every day. It is art and history, not a spectacle, and it is one of the reasons the site is UNESCO-listed.

The palace tier, including the Oberoi Rajgarh Palace in Khajuraho, sits above both and is quoted separately as a named upgrade. Foreign nationals add roughly Rs 4,000 to 4,500 for the higher monument fees (Taj Rs 1,100 vs Rs 50, Agra Fort Rs 650 vs Rs 50, Fatehpur Sikri about Rs 610 vs Rs 50, Amber Rs 500 vs Rs 100, plus the Khajuraho Western Group and the Orchha monuments). Foreigners also pay a Rs 500 ADA toll at Agra, shared across Agra monuments the same day and waived on Fridays. OCI cardholders pay Indian rates with the physical card; under-15s enter the Taj free.
