Most people treat Agra Fort as a quick stop on the way to the Taj Mahal, and that is the mistake I spend my mornings correcting. This is not a wall with a gate. It is a walled city of red sandstone and marble that holds the other half of the Taj story: the emperor who built the Taj spent his last years imprisoned here, looking at it across the river from a marble tower. Give it two to three hours and it becomes the best pairing the Taj could ask for.

Fatehpur Sikri is the one people leave off the list, and the one that surprises them most. Akbar built a whole capital here in red sandstone, moved his court in, and then walked away from it within about fifteen years. What is left is a Mughal city frozen at the moment it was abandoned, quieter and stranger than the Taj, with the tallest gateway in the country and the tomb of the saint the whole city was built to honour. It sits 40 km outside Agra, so it asks for a little more of your day.

The nickname does it a disservice. People call it the Baby Taj because it looks like a smaller Taj Mahal, but this tomb came first, and without it there might be no Taj as we know it. It is the building where Mughal architecture switched from red sandstone to white marble, covered in the same inlaid flowers you will later see on the Taj, and it holds the grandfather of the very woman the Taj was built for. It is small enough to take in at a glance and detailed enough to keep you an hour.

Once you have stood in front of the Taj Mahal, the next best thing you can do is cross the river and look back at it. Mehtab Bagh is the garden that does exactly that. It sits directly opposite the Taj on the far bank of the Yamuna, aligned with it, and at sunset the white marble turns gold and reflects in the garden's pool while barely anyone is around. It is the calm counterpart to the crowds at the main gate, and it is where I send people who want the photograph everyone else missed.

I grew up a short drive from this building, and I have walked people through it in every season and every light. The photographs prepare you for the shape but not for the scale, or for the moment the marble changes colour as the sun comes up.
