By car, and why it wins here
The drive is about 240 km on NH-21, the highway between Agra and Jaipur through Bharatpur and Dausa. There is no dedicated expressway on this leg as there is between Delhi and Agra, but the road is a good divided highway and the direct run takes four to five hours, with tolls of roughly ₹200 to ₹400 for a car.
The reason to choose the car is not speed, though, it is the stops: two genuine highlights sit right on or just off the route, and only a car lets you take them in. With them, allow five to six hours or make a relaxed day of it.
By train
Trains run from Agra to Jaipur in about three and a half to five hours, services including the Marudhar Express and the Ajmer-bound intercity trains, in air-conditioned chair car and sleeper classes. The train is comfortable, cheap and reliable for a straight point-to-point transfer, and it avoids the road entirely. What it cannot do is stop at Fatehpur Sikri or Chand Baori, so it suits travellers who have already seen those or who are prioritising speed and budget over the journey.
By bus
State and private buses, including air-conditioned services, run Agra to Jaipur in about five to six hours. The bus is the cheapest way to make the trip and runs frequently, but it is the least comfortable and, like the train, gives you none of the roadside stops. It suits budget travellers who are set on the lowest fare.
Why not to fly
There is no sensible direct flight between Agra and Jaipur. Any air routing connects through Delhi, which takes far longer end to end than simply driving or taking the train, and costs more. On this leg, flying is the one option to ignore.
Which is best for you
For the Golden Triangle, take the car, because Fatehpur Sikri and Chand Baori are half the point of the leg and only the car reaches them. If you have already seen those, or you simply want the fastest comfortable transfer, take the train. Take the bus only if the lowest fare matters most. Best time to make the trip
The comfortable season is October to March, when the weather across the region is mild and the winter birds are at Keoladeo. April to June is very hot for a long drive or a stepwell with no shade, and July to September brings the monsoon. If you are travelling in summer, start early to avoid the worst of the midday heat on the road.

Fatehpur Sikri
About 37 to 40 km out of Agra
The first and best stop, the perfectly preserved red sandstone city the emperor Akbar built and then abandoned, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits right on the road west, so it costs you almost no detour.
Chand Baori at Abhaneri
About 95 km before Jaipur, near Dausa
One of India's deepest and most spectacular stepwells, a dizzying geometry of some 3,500 steps descending 13 storeys, with the Harshat Mata temple beside it. It is a short detour off the highway and takes under an hour to see.
Keoladeo National Park
About 55 km from Agra, at Bharatpur
A UNESCO-listed bird sanctuary, at its best in winter when migratory birds arrive. It suits travellers with a little more time and an interest in wildlife.
