How far is Agra from Jaipur?

The distance from Agra to Jaipur is about 240 to 260 km by road, depending on which route you take and the journey usually takes around 4.5 to 5 hours by car. It is one of the classic legs of the Golden Triangle, linking the city of the Taj Mahal with the capital of Rajasthan and is an easy and rewarding half-day on the road.

Best of all, the Agra to Jaipur route passes close to some truly wonderful sights, above all the magnificent abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, so the journey is not just a plain transfer between two cities but a real chance to see more of the region along the way. For this reason, the great majority of travellers sensibly make this particular trip by road, with a comfortable private car and an experienced driver, precisely so that they can stop, explore and make the most of the sights en route at their own pace.

Routes from Agra to Jaipur

There are a couple of main road routes between Agra and Jaipur and which is best depends on where you are starting and finishing and on whether you wish to stop at Fatehpur Sikri:

  • Via the Bikaner-Agra Road: this route is the shorter and generally faster of the options, at about 239 to 249 km and around 4.5 hours by car. It is the quickest and most direct way to make the journey straight between the two cities when you simply want to get there.

  • Via NH 21 (through Bharatpur): the main highway route runs along National Highway 21, a distance of about 258 to 261 km, passing through the town of Bharatpur. This is the classic route that goes closest to Fatehpur Sikri, the great stop on the way, which is exactly why so many Golden Triangle travellers choose to take it.

  • Via NH 44 and NH 21: a further good option combines National Highways 44 and 21, a distance of about 252 km, another well-made road route linking the two cities, giving you flexibility depending on your exact starting and finishing points.

Both main routes are good, well-made roads. If your priority is simply to reach Jaipur quickly, the Bikaner-Agra Road is the faster choice, while if you wish to stop at Fatehpur Sikri along the way, as most travellers do, the highway route through that area is the natural one to take.

The great stop on the way: Fatehpur Sikri

The single best reason to travel from Agra to Jaipur by road is the chance to stop at Fatehpur Sikri, which lies about 40 km from Agra, on the way towards Jaipur.

Fatehpur Sikri is a magnificent, remarkably well-preserved abandoned Mughal city, built by the great emperor Akbar in the sixteenth century as his grand new capital and then abandoned after only a short time, by tradition for want of a reliable water supply. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a breathtaking and atmospheric complex of red-sandstone palaces, courtyards, halls and mosques, including the towering Buland Darwaza gateway, one of the largest and most imposing gateways anywhere in the world, the beautiful Jama Masjid, the elegant Panch Mahal and the exquisite white-marble tomb of the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, still a place of living pilgrimage. It is one of the great sights of the whole Golden Triangle and stopping here breaks the Agra to Jaipur journey beautifully, turning what would otherwise be a simple transfer between the two cities into a genuine highlight of the trip.

Other stops along the way

Beyond Fatehpur Sikri, there are one or two other lovely stops you can make on the Agra to Jaipur road:

  • Abhaneri (Chand Baori): near Dausa, a short and worthwhile detour off the route, lies the extraordinary Chand Baori at Abhaneri, one of the oldest and deepest stepwells in all of India, a dizzying, perfectly symmetrical geometric marvel of thousands of criss-crossing steps descending deep into the earth and a truly wonderful photo stop.

  • Bharatpur: the town of Bharatpur, with its famous Keoladeo National Park, a renowned bird sanctuary and UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies close to the route and makes an excellent stop for keen birdwatchers and nature lovers, especially in the cooler winter season when migratory birds arrive.

  • Roadside dhabas and resorts: the route is lined with good roadside dhabas, restaurants and resorts, perfect for a tea or a meal break on the way.

With a private car and a little time, a trip that includes Fatehpur Sikri and perhaps Abhaneri, turns the Agra to Jaipur drive into one of the most memorable days of a Golden Triangle trip.

How to travel from Agra to Jaipur

You can travel from Agra to Jaipur by road, by train or by bus, each with its own advantages. Here is how they compare:

  • By car or taxi: the most flexible and comfortable way by far, taking around 4.5 to 5 hours and, crucially, letting you stop at Fatehpur Sikri and the other sights along the way at your own pace. This is comfortably the usual choice for a Golden Triangle trip, travelling with a private air-conditioned car and an experienced driver.

  • By train: several trains connect Agra and Jaipur, taking around 3.5 to 5 hours depending on the particular service. The train is a comfortable, restful and economical option, though it does not let you stop at Fatehpur Sikri on the way, which you would then need to visit separately as a side trip from Agra instead.

  • By bus: regular buses, including comfortable air-conditioned coaches run by the state transport services and private operators, connect the two cities, a reliable and budget-friendly choice, though again without the roadside stops.

  • By air: direct flights between Agra and Jaipur are very limited and as the cities are so close by road, flying is not a practical option for this journey; road or rail is far better.

For a Golden Triangle trip, travelling by road with a private car and driver is by far the best way, precisely because it lets you include the wonderful Fatehpur Sikri on the drive.

How long does it take?

The time the journey takes depends on your route and your stops. By road, the Agra to Jaipur journey takes around 4.5 to 5 hours of pure driving, a little less on the faster Bikaner-Agra Road and a little more on the longer highway route, not counting any stops you make. If you stop at Fatehpur Sikri, as most travellers do, allow a couple of extra hours for a proper visit, which makes it a full and rewarding day on the road. By train, the journey takes around 3.5 to 5 hours depending on the service.

For planning a Golden Triangle trip, it is sensible to set off from Agra in the morning, stop at Fatehpur Sikri on the way and arrive in Jaipur in the afternoon or early evening, with time to settle in before the next day's sightseeing.

What to see when you arrive in Jaipur

Jaipur, the Pink City, is one of India's most colourful and rewarding destinations, full of grand forts, palaces and bazaars. Among its great highlights are the magnificent hilltop Amber Fort, the iconic Hawa Mahal, the City Palace, the Jantar Mantar observatory, the Nahargarh and Jaigarh forts and the lively markets of the old walled city.

To plan your time in the Pink City, our things to do in Jaipur guide covers the whole city, while our Amber Fort ticket and timings and Hawa Mahal Jaipur guide guides cover two of its most famous sights in full.

Before you leave: Agra's highlights

Of course, before setting off for Jaipur, do make sure you have seen the great sights of Agra itself, above all the magnificent Taj Mahal, one of the true wonders of the world and the mighty red-sandstone Agra Fort, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Our Taj Mahal ticket price and timings guide covers the Taj in full, with its tickets, timings and the all-important Friday closure and our things to do in Agra guide covers the rest of the city, so that you leave Agra having properly seen its very best before beginning the drive on to Jaipur.

Agra, Jaipur and the Golden Triangle

The Agra to Jaipur journey is one leg of the classic Golden Triangle, the most popular tourist circuit in India, linking Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. A typical Golden Triangle trip travels from Delhi to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, then on to Jaipur, often stopping at Fatehpur Sikri on the way and back to Delhi.

Seeing these cities together as a circuit lets you experience the three great cities of North India in one trip, from the capital and the wonder of the Taj Mahal to the forts and palaces of Rajasthan. To see how it all fits together, our one week North India itinerary guide maps out the whole journey.

Best time to travel

The best time of year to travel from Agra to Jaipur and to enjoy both cities and Fatehpur Sikri, is the cool season, from October to March, when the weather is pleasant for the journey, the roadside stops and the sightseeing. The summer, from April to June, can be very hot in this region, while the monsoon brings some rain from July to September.

Whatever the season, it is best to set off from Agra in the morning, so you have time to enjoy Fatehpur Sikri on the way and still arrive in Jaipur in good time.

Yes and you certainly should. Fatehpur Sikri, the magnificent abandoned Mughal capital built by Akbar, lies about 40 km from Agra on the way towards Jaipur and is one of the great sights of the Golden Triangle. Stopping there breaks the journey beautifully, so travel by road with a private car to include it.
