Amber Fort timings

The Amber Fort is open every day for daytime exploration, with the special Amber by Night tour and elephant rides at their own times.

  • Daytime exploration: the Amber Fort is open daily, every day of the week, from 8 AM to 5:30 PM, with the ticket counters closing a little earlier, at 5 PM, so do plan to buy your ticket or arrive with your online ticket in hand, well before then.

  • Amber by Night: a special night-tourism walking tour of selected courtyards of the fort runs in the evening, from 6:30 PM to 9:15 PM, when the beautiful fort is softly lit up against the dark hillside, a lovely and atmospheric way to see it.

  • Elephant rides: elephant rides up to the fort are offered in the morning, from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM, subject to availability and regulations (see below).

The early morning, soon after opening, is the best time for a daytime visit, before the crowds and the heat build up and the light on the fort and the lake is at its loveliest. The cool season, October to March, is the most comfortable time of year to visit.

Light and Sound show timings

The Amber Fort has a wonderful evening Light and Sound show, which tells the story of the fort and of Rajasthan, in both English and Hindi, at times that change with the season:

Season

English show

Hindi show

Winter (October to February)

6:30 PM

7:30 PM

Spring (March to April)

7:00 PM

8:00 PM

Summer and monsoon (May to September)

7:30 PM

8:30 PM

So in the cool winter months the English show is at 6:30 PM and the Hindi show at 7:30 PM, shifting later as the days lengthen into spring and summer. The show is a memorable way to round off a visit and can be combined with the Amber by Night tour for a full evening at the fort.

Amber Fort entry fees

The Amber Fort entry fee depends on your nationality and whether you are a student, with separate tickets for the Light and Sound show and the elephant ride.

The Light and Sound show is separately ticketed, at ₹100 to ₹200 for Indians and ₹500 for foreigners. These rates are set by the authorities and can change, so reconfirm the current fees before you travel.

Amber Fort ticket price, in short

Here are the main Amber Fort ticket prices, at the time of writing:

  • Indian adults: ₹100 per person for daytime entry.

  • Indian students: ₹20 per person, on showing a valid student ID.

  • Foreign tourists: ₹500 per person for daytime entry.

  • Foreign students: ₹150 per person, on showing a valid student ID.

  • Light and Sound show: ₹100 to ₹200 for Indians and ₹500 for foreigners, a separate ticket.

  • Elephant ride: ₹1,100 per couple, subject to availability and regulations.

A single daytime entry ticket covers the fort itself and its palaces and courtyards; the Light and Sound show, the Amber by Night tour and the elephant ride are all ticketed separately.

Elephant rides and other ways up

A famous, if much-debated, feature of the Amber Fort is the traditional elephant ride up the ramp to the main gate, offered in the morning from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at ₹1,100 per couple and subject to availability and to the regulations that limit the number of rides each day. If you would prefer not to take an elephant or if the rides are full or not running when you visit, you can very easily walk up the gentle, paved ramp on foot, which takes only a short while and lets you enjoy the views as you climb or take a jeep up to the fort, which many visitors choose to do. However you make your way up to the gate, the fort itself and everything within its walls is exactly the same wonderful experience, so choose whichever option suits you best.

How to book Amber Fort tickets online

You can buy your Amber Fort tickets at the counter at the gate or book them online in advance through the official Rajasthan Tourism online booking system, to skip the ticket lines at the fort. Advance entry and show passes can be booked directly through the official Rajasthan Tourism booking portal, the OBMS tourist portal (obms-tourist.rajasthan.gov.in). Here is the step-by-step process:

  1. Open the portal: go to the official Rajasthan OBMS tourist portal. Amber Fort Ticket Booking.

  2. Find Amber Fort: search for the Amber Fort using the site's search bar and click Book Now.

  3. Verify by OTP: enter your email address or mobile number to receive a one-time password or OTP, then type in the OTP to verify.

  4. Pick your date: choose your intended date of visit.

  5. Enter visitor details: fill in the details for each visitor, including name, age and ID information.

  6. Enter the captcha: type the captcha text shown on the screen.

  7. Make payment: click Make Payment and complete the transaction using your preferred online payment method.

Keep the e-ticket saved on your phone and carry the original ID used in the booking, as both may be checked at the fort.

What to see inside the Amber Fort

The Amber Fort is a vast and beautiful fort-palace, built in warm yellow and pink sandstone and white marble, rising in grand, dramatic terraces up the rugged hillside above the Maota Lake. Begun in the late sixteenth century by Raja Man Singh and extended by later Rajput rulers, it was the ancient seat of the Kachhwaha kings of Amer before the capital moved to Jaipur. Inside, there is a great deal to explore:

  • Jaleb Chowk: the great main courtyard, the first you enter, where the army once gathered and where the elephant rides arrive.

  • Sila Devi Temple: the revered temple to the goddess Sila Devi, reached from the main courtyard.

  • Ganesh Pol: the magnificent, richly painted gateway dedicated to Lord Ganesha, one of the most beautiful parts of the fort.

  • Sheesh Mahal: the dazzling Palace of Mirrors, its walls and ceilings inlaid with countless tiny mirrors that glitter in the light, the fort's most famous sight.

  • Sukh Niwas: the Hall of Pleasure, cleverly cooled by water channels, across the courtyard from the Sheesh Mahal.

  • Diwan-i-Am: the Hall of Public Audience, a fine pillared hall; and the views over the Maota Lake and the gardens below.

The views from the fort's many terraces, balconies and latticed windows, out over the Maota Lake, the geometric gardens and the surrounding rugged hills with their long old defensive walls snaking across the ridges, are simply magnificent, among the finest in all of Rajasthan, so do take your time to pause and enjoy them as you explore.

Tips for visiting the Amber Fort

  • Go early: arrive soon after the 8 AM opening for a quieter visit, cooler weather and lovely light on the fort and lake.

  • Book online: booking through the OBMS portal in advance saves time in the ticket queues.

  • Carry student ID: students get a big discount, so bring a valid student ID if you qualify.

  • Choose how to go up: walk up the ramp, take a jeep or an elephant ride in the morning, as you prefer.

  • Consider the evening: the Amber by Night tour and the Light and Sound show make a lovely evening at the fort.

  • Bring your ID: carry the original government or student ID used in your booking.
