North India is a vast and wonderfully varied region, stretching from the hot plains of Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan to the cool, high Himalayan hills and so the best time to visit depends very much on where you are going. For most travellers, chasing the world-famous sights of the Golden Triangle and the forts and palaces of Rajasthan, the cool season from October to March is by far the best. For the hills, the opposite is true. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages explains the best time to visit North India in full, season by season and region by region, ideal for planning a Golden Triangle tour.

I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years guiding the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have helped countless travellers plan the timing of their North India trips, across both the plains and the hills. Here is the clear, practical guide.

The short answer: October to March

For the classic North India trip, taking in Delhi, Agra, the Taj Mahal, the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan, the best time to visit is the cool season, from October to March. During these months the weather across the northern plains is pleasant and comfortable for sightseeing, with warm, sunny days and cool, sometimes cold, nights, ideal for long days exploring the forts, palaces, temples and monuments on foot.

This is very much the peak tourist season, rich in colourful festivals and at its most beautiful and by far the most comfortable time for the long journeys and the extensive sightseeing that a North India trip involves. If your trip centres on the famous headline sights of the plains, as most do, aim squarely for these months. The Himalayan hill stations, by contrast, follow the opposite pattern and are best in summer, as we explain below, so the ideal timing really depends on where in this vast region you are heading.

Season by season

North India has distinct seasons, each with its own character:

  • Winter (December to February): cool to cold on the plains, crisp, dry and sunny by day and ideal for sightseeing in Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan, though December and January can bring foggy mornings and chilly nights. This is prime time for the plains and the great monuments and the season for snow and clear mountain views in the higher hills.

  • Spring (March to April): one of the loveliest and most balanced times of year, with pleasant, gently warming weather across the plains before the summer heat arrives, the joyful festival of Holi and the hill stations beginning to open up and warm. A wonderful, comfortable time for almost everywhere in the north.

  • Summer (May to June): hot to very hot and dry across the plains, genuinely uncomfortable for the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan and best avoided there, but this is the high season for the Himalayan hill stations, when travellers happily escape the heat for the cool, green mountains.

  • Monsoon (July to September): the rains bring welcome relief, freshness, lush greenery and noticeably thinner crowds to the plains, which some travellers genuinely enjoy, though also humidity and occasional heavy downpours, while in the hills heavy rain can trigger landslides and disruption, so mountain travel during these months needs real care and flexibility.

  • Autumn (October to November): the fresh, clear post-monsoon months are among the very best of the whole year, with the great festival season including Diwali, comfortable temperatures returning to the plains and superb light and weather, making it an excellent and deservedly popular time to travel across the region.

The plains, the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan

For Delhi, Agra and the Golden Triangle and for Rajasthan, the northern plains and the great desert, the best time is firmly October to March. The cool, dry weather during these months is perfect for long days of sightseeing at the Taj Mahal, the forts and the palaces and for the camel safaris, desert camps and outdoor experiences of Rajasthan, none of which are pleasant in the heat.

Within this window, the sweet spots are often October and November and February and March, when the weather is at its most pleasant and comfortable, avoiding both the coldest, foggiest depths of mid-winter and the first heat of spring. Summer, from April to June, is very hot across the plains and desert and genuinely best avoided for these destinations, while the monsoon brings humidity and some rain. Our best time to visit Delhi guide covers the capital in detail, our best time to visit the Taj Mahal guide the Taj and our places to visit in Rajasthan from Delhi guide the desert state and its seasons.

The Himalayan hill stations

For the hill stations of the north, the picture is neatly reversed. Places like Shimla, Manali, Nainital, Mussoorie and Dharamshala are at their very best in summer, from April to June, precisely when travellers want to escape the searing heat of the plains for the cool, fresh, pleasant mountain weather and the green hillsides. This is their busy high season, so book stays well ahead.

The winter, from December to February, brings cold and, at the higher elevations, snow, which is magical for a snowy hill visit and popular around the new year, though some higher roads and passes may be affected or closed. The monsoon, from July to September, is best approached with real care in the hills, as heavy rain can cause landslides and block roads. Our Delhi to Shimla distance and Delhi to Nainital distance guides cover two beloved hill stations in detail and our 3-day trips from Delhi guide covers short hill escapes from the capital.

Month by month

A quick month-by-month view helps with planning:

Month

What to expect

October

Fresh, pleasant; festival season begins; excellent for the plains

November

Cool and lovely; great for the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan

December

Cold and crisp; some fog; peak season; snow in the hills

January

Cold, foggy mornings; clear sunny days; winter in the hills

February

Pleasant and mild; one of the best months everywhere

March

Lovely and warming; Holi; a sweet spot before summer

April

Warming to hot on the plains; hill season begins

May

Hot on the plains; peak hill-station season

June

Very hot on the plains; hills busy; monsoon nears

July to September

Monsoon; green plains; hill caution

Festivals in North India

North India's festivals are one of the great reasons to time a trip carefully, adding colour, joy and unforgettable atmosphere and many of the biggest fall conveniently within the cool season:

  • Diwali: the great festival of lights, usually falling in October or November, when cities, homes, temples and bazaars right across the north are beautifully lit with rows of lamps, candles and decorations, a truly magical and joyful time to be in India.

  • Holi: the joyful, exuberant festival of colours, in March, celebrated with great energy across the north and especially, famously, in the Braj region near Agra where it has deep religious roots.

  • Dussehra and Navratri: the vibrant autumn festivals, with fairs, processions, music and dance colouring towns and cities across the region.

  • Republic Day: 26 January, marked by the grand ceremonial parade down Rajpath in the heart of Delhi.

  • Pushkar Camel Fair: in Rajasthan, usually October or November around Kartik Purnima, a spectacular and world-famous desert livestock fair and cultural festival.

Timing a trip around one of these festivals adds a truly magical and memorable dimension to it, a chance to see India at its most vibrant and celebratory, though it also means bigger crowds, higher prices and busier trains and hotels, so it is wise to plan and book well ahead. Note too that the dates of most Hindu festivals shift each year with the lunar calendar, so always reconfirm the exact dates when planning around them.

A note on winter weather and air quality

An honest word on winter: while December to February is the peak season for the plains and the weather is largely sunny, dry and pleasant by day, the deep-winter months can bring cold, foggy mornings, which occasionally delay flights and trains and the northern plains, including Delhi and parts of the Golden Triangle, can experience poorer air quality at times in the late autumn and winter, particularly around and after Diwali.

This is worth being aware of when you plan, though it should not put you off a winter trip, as conditions vary a good deal from day to day and week to week and the season overall remains the very best for comfortable sightseeing. If you are particularly sensitive to air quality, the cleaner, fresher months of February, March and October are often the most comfortable across the plains and it is always worth checking current, up-to-date conditions for your dates as you plan. On balance, the weather and air are at their most pleasant in the shoulder months of the cool season rather than its deepest, coldest weeks.

Best time for different trips

To sum up by trip:

  • Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur): October to March, with February, March and October the sweet spots for the most pleasant weather and the clearest skies.

  • Rajasthan: October to March for the forts, palaces, deserts and camel fairs, when the desert days are warm and the nights cool.

  • The Taj Mahal: October to March and at sunrise on any of those days for the best soft light and the fewest crowds, remembering it is closed on Fridays.

  • Hill stations: April to June for a cool, green summer escape from the plains or December to February for crisp air, clear views and snow at the higher elevations.

  • A whole North India trip: October to March is the best overall, focusing on the plains and monuments, with the hills best added as a spring or autumn extension when both plains and hills are comfortable.

Whatever your plan and whichever corner of this huge and varied region you are drawn to, we can advise you on the very best timing for it and build your whole trip around that ideal season, so you travel in the most comfortable and rewarding conditions.

Travel tips for timing your trip

  • Aim for October to March for the Golden Triangle, the Taj Mahal and Rajasthan.

  • Choose April to June for the Himalayan hill stations, as a cool escape from the plains.

  • Favour the shoulder months, October, November, February and March, for the best all-round weather.

  • Pack warm layers for winter, when the days are pleasant but mornings and nights are cold.

  • Check current weather, fog and air-quality conditions for your dates when you plan, especially in winter.

  • Book stays and travel well ahead for the peak cool season and around the major festivals.
