When is the best time to visit Delhi?
The best time to visit Delhi is during the cool season, from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for exploring the city's monuments, markets and gardens on foot without being worn out by heat. This is the peak tourist season and for good reason: the days are mild and often sunny, the evenings are cool and pleasant and it is simply the ideal weather for the kind of walking-heavy sightseeing that Delhi rewards.
Within this window, February, March and October are often the real sweet spot, offering the most comfortable weather along with generally clearer skies and better air than the depths of winter. The heart of winter, December and January, is beautifully crisp and atmospheric but can be genuinely cold and foggy, while the summer and monsoon months, though hotter and wetter, bring their own real advantages of far fewer crowds and noticeably lower prices, so the "best" time does depend a little on what you want from your trip.
Delhi in winter: October to March
Winter is the best and most popular time to visit Delhi and it is the reason most travellers choose these particular months:
The weather: cool and pleasant days, with comfortable temperatures ideal for sightseeing and plenty of clear, sunny mornings. December and January are the coldest, with chilly, sometimes foggy mornings and evenings that call for warm layers, while October, February and March are milder and gentler.
Sightseeing: this is the perfect time to explore Delhi's forts, tombs, temples, markets and gardens on foot, in comfortable weather, without the exhaustion of the summer heat.
Festivals: the season is full of festivals and events, from Diwali and the winter holidays to Republic Day, a wonderful time to experience the city's colour and culture at its liveliest.
The catch: it is the peak tourist season, so the top sights are busier and hotel prices higher; December and January can be genuinely cold and foggy and dense fog can occasionally delay flights and trains, so allow a little flexibility around those months.
For most visitors, the pleasant weather makes winter comfortably the best time to see Delhi and it is the season we most often recommend to our travellers. If you can, aim for the milder edges of it, October and February to March, to pair the good weather with fewer of winter's downsides.
Delhi in summer: April to June
Summer in Delhi is hot and best approached with a little care and planning:
The weather: very hot, with temperatures climbing steadily through April and soaring in the fierce, dry heat of May and June, when the middle of the day can be genuinely uncomfortable for sightseeing out in the open.
How to cope: if you do visit in summer, sightsee in the early morning and the cooler evening, take plenty of breaks in air-conditioned spaces such as museums, malls and cafes, wear light clothing and a hat and carry and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
The upside: far fewer tourists, noticeably shorter queues at the monuments and lower prices on hotels and travel, so it can genuinely suit budget travellers and those who do not mind or can plan around, the heat.
Summer is not the ideal time for a leisurely Delhi trip, but with an early start, sensible planning and a willingness to rest through the hottest hours, the city can still be enjoyed and you will find it far quieter and cheaper than in the peak season, which suits some travellers very well.
Delhi in monsoon: July to September
The monsoon brings welcome rain and blessed relief from the fierce summer heat:
The weather: warm and humid, with spells of rain, sometimes heavy, that cool the air and turn the city's many gardens, parks and tree-lined avenues lush and green. The rain usually comes in bursts rather than lasting all day, so there is plenty of dry time in between for sightseeing.
The upside: the greenery is beautiful, the fierce summer heat eases, crowds are thin and prices are low and there is a pleasant, washed-clean freshness in the air after a good shower, when the light is often lovely.
The catch: the humidity can be high and sticky and heavy downpours can cause some waterlogging and traffic snarls in low-lying parts of the city, so build a little flexibility into your plans and do not pack the days too tightly.
The monsoon is an underrated time to visit Delhi, quieter, greener and cheaper and genuinely pleasant so long as you do not mind some rain and humidity and keep your plans a little flexible.
Delhi month by month
For a quick sense of the year, here is Delhi month by month:
Months | What to expect |
October | Post-monsoon, warm to pleasant, the season begins, a lovely time |
November | Pleasant and cool, festive, one of the best months |
December to January | Cold, crisp, sometimes foggy, festive winter |
February to March | Mild, pleasant, spring, often the sweet spot |
April to June | Increasingly hot, then very hot, quieter |
July to September | Warm, humid and rainy, green and quiet |
This gives a general picture of the Delhi year, though the exact weather varies a little from year to year and the dates of the festival season shift with the Hindu calendar, so it is always worth checking both the forecast and the festival dates close to your trip. As a simple rule of thumb, if you have a free choice, aim for the cool, dry stretch from around late October to March and you will see Delhi at its most comfortable.
Best time to visit Delhi for different travellers
The right time depends on what you want from your trip:
For comfortable sightseeing: October to March and especially February, March and October, for the most pleasant walking weather at the monuments, markets and gardens.
For festivals and culture: the October to March season is richest, taking in Diwali, Dussehra, the winter holidays and Republic Day, so you can time your trip around a great celebration.
For fewer crowds: the summer and monsoon months, April to September, are much quieter at the sights, with shorter queues and more room to breathe.
For a lower budget: the summer and monsoon also bring the lowest prices on hotels and flights, so they can offer real value for money-conscious travellers.
For clear skies and greenery: the monsoon and just after, into October, bring lush greenery, dramatic skies and often the freshest, cleanest air of the year.
Matching the season to your priorities helps you get the most from your Delhi trip, whether you value perfect weather, thin crowds, low prices, colourful festivals or fresh, green surroundings and we are always happy to advise on the best dates for what you have in mind.
A note on Delhi's air quality
It is worth knowing, honestly, that Delhi's air quality varies through the year and can be poor at times, especially in the late autumn and winter, roughly November to January, when cooler, stiller air, along with seasonal factors, can trap pollution and let a haze settle over the city. This is simply a factor to be aware of when planning, rather than a reason to stay away.
The air is generally at its cleanest during and just after the monsoon, when the rain washes it clear and in the spring, so October and February to March, often combine the most pleasant weather with better air quality, one more reason those shoulder months are the sweet spot. Those who are particularly sensitive to air quality may prefer these months and anyone can check the current air quality index in the days before and during their trip and plan accordingly, keeping busier outdoor days for the clearer days. It need not put you off at all, millions of people live in and enjoy Delhi year-round, but it is a sensible thing to factor in when you choose your dates.
Festivals and events in Delhi
Delhi's calendar is full of colourful festivals and timing your visit around one can be a highlight:
Diwali: the festival of lights, usually falling in October or November, when the whole city sparkles with oil lamps, fairy lights, decorations and celebration, a truly beautiful and joyful time.
Holi: the joyful festival of colours, in spring, usually March, a riotous, exuberant day of coloured powders, water and fun celebrated across the city.
Republic Day: the 26th of January, marked with a grand ceremonial parade in the heart of the capital, a spectacular national occasion, though it does bring some road closures and heightened security.
The winter holidays: Christmas and New Year bring a warm, festive buzz to the city's markets, hotels, restaurants and churches, lovely for an end-of-year visit.
Dussehra and other festivals: the autumn also brings Dussehra, with its Ramlila performances and effigy burnings and many other colourful festivals fill the calendar through the year.
Most of Delhi's biggest festivals fall in the cool season, from around October to March, which is another good reason it is such a rewarding and atmospheric time to visit, though the exact dates shift each year with the Hindu calendar, so check them when you plan.
