Why Add Kerala

Kerala is the perfect counterweight to the Golden Triangle. The north gives you Mughal grandeur, deserts and crowds; Kerala gives you palm-lined backwaters, mist over tea plantations, spice-scented hills and a gentle, green calm. It is one of India's most relaxing regions, spotless, unhurried and lush, and doing it straight after the intensity of the north is exactly why the combination works so well. In 4 to 5 days you get a real taste of central Kerala — the backwaters, the hills, the coast and the food — before flying home rested.

What You'll See

Fort Kochi (Cochin). A characterful old port city layered with Portuguese, Dutch and British history: the Chinese fishing nets, the Mattancherry (Dutch) Palace, the old synagogue and spice markets, and colonial streets made for wandering. Your arrival point, and a lovely half to full day. Munnar. Rolling tea plantations at around 1,600 m, cool and green, with waterfalls, viewpoints and a tea museum. About 3 to 4 hours' drive up from Kochi; one to two days. Thekkady (Periyar). Spice plantations and the Periyar wildlife sanctuary, with a boat cruise on the lake and a walk through cardamom and pepper country. About a day. Alleppey and the backwaters. The signature experience: an overnight houseboat gliding through Vembanad Lake and the canals, past paddy fields and village life, with meals cooked on board. One unforgettable night.

Honest Advice

Three honest things. First, you can't 'do Kerala' in two days. The full central circuit really wants a week; in a 4 to 5 day add we pick the best of it (usually Kochi, one hill or spice stop, and the backwaters) rather than pretend you can see everything. If you have more days, we add more. Second, there is real driving: Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey are several hours apart by road (Munnar to the backwaters can be 5 hours), so we pace the transfers and pick a route that flows. Third, the houseboat is a slow float, not a cruise: you board around noon, cruise through the afternoon, and the boat anchors for the night with a short morning cruise before checkout, so it is about stillness, sunset and dawn on the water (the dawn hour is the magic one), not constant motion. Book the quieter Kumarakom side if you want fewer boats around.
