The mistake is spreading a thin layer of "romance" over a sightseeing trip. A honeymoon needs somewhere to actually stop and be together, and on this circuit that place is Udaipur, not the Taj at nine in the morning with a thousand other people. So we make the monuments efficient and give Udaipur the time.

Udaipur earns its reputation, and given three nights it is genuinely one of the most romantic places in India: A private sunset boat on Lake Pichola. Out on the water as the light goes gold on the City Palace and the island palaces, this is the single most romantic hour of the trip, and it is real, not manufactured. A palace on the lake. Udaipur has genuine palace hotels, and a night in one is the honeymoon centrepiece. Slow lake mornings. The whole point of Udaipur is that you can do very little: breakfast over the water, a swim, a long lunch, and watch the lake change. The gentle sights. The City Palace, the garden of Saheliyon ki Bari, the sunset from the Monsoon Palace, and an evening of Rajasthani dance at Bagore ki Haveli, none of it rushed. Three nights lets Udaipur be a honeymoon rather than another stop. Two is the minimum; one wastes the flight.

Udaipur is one of the few places where "palace hotel" can be literal, and where it is most often stretched. The Taj Lake Palace floats in the middle of Lake Pichola, an eighteenth-century marble palace reached by boat. The Oberoi Udaivilas sits on the lakeshore in its own grounds, one of the most celebrated hotels in the world. These are the honeymoon dream, and they are priced like it, so we quote them honestly as a one or two night centrepiece rather than pretending every "heritage hotel" is a floating palace. On the standard tier you have a lovely lake-view hotel, and we are clear about the difference rather than blurring it.

We will say it plainly because it matters on a honeymoon: Lake Pichola is monsoon-fed, and in a poor-rain year the water can be low, and occasionally very low. A lake-view palace loses much of its magic if the lake is a mudflat, and this genuinely happens some years. So before you book a lake-view room or a floating palace, we tell you the current level and the recent monsoon, honestly, so you decide with the facts. Most sellers let you find out on arrival. We would rather you knew, and chose, in advance.

Honeymoon packages are full of "romance", and some of it is real and some is theatre: Worth it: the private Lake Pichola sunset boat. The genuine article, and the memory you will keep. Worth it, if the budget allows: one palace night. Taj Lake Palace or Oberoi Udaivilas as a centrepiece, rather than every night. Nice, not essential: the in-room candlelight-and-petals package. Pleasant hotel theatre; take it if you like it, but do not mistake it for the trip's romance. Skip: the "romantic" upsell on the Taj visit. The Taj at sunrise is beautiful and worth it, but it is not private at any price; the privacy is in Udaipur. We will tell you which is which rather than sell you all of them.

Days 1 to 2 (Delhi): arrive and see the capital. Airport pickup and hotel, the first day light after your flights and your wedding. A paced tour of Old and New Delhi: a cycle-rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk, Humayun's Tomb, the Qutub Minar, and a drive past India Gate. Red Fort is closed on Mondays, so the day is sequenced around it. Overnight Delhi, two nights. Day 3 (Delhi to Agra): the fort and the Taj. Drive to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway (about 3.5 to 4.5 hours). Agra Fort, then the Taj Mahal at your best light, sequenced onto a non-Friday, with a sunset view from Mehtab Bagh across the river if you have the energy. Overnight Agra. Day 4 (Agra to Jaipur): sunrise Taj, Fatehpur Sikri. An optional sunrise return to the Taj, then drive to Jaipur (about 4.5 hours, 235 km) via Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned capital. Overnight Jaipur. Day 5 (Jaipur): the Pink City. Amber Fort in the morning, ascended by jeep and never the elephant, then the City Palace, the Jantar Mantar, a photo stop at the Hawa Mahal, and time in the bazaars. Overnight Jaipur. Day 6 (Jaipur to Udaipur): fly to the lakes, and the honeymoon begins. A short flight to Udaipur (about 1 hour, in place of the 7 to 8 hour drive; book ahead as flights are limited). Settle into your lake hotel or palace, and an easy first evening by the water. Overnight Udaipur. Day 7 (Udaipur): the city and the sunset boat. A gentle morning, then the City Palace and Jagdish Temple at your own pace. In the late afternoon, the private Lake Pichola sunset boat, the heart of the honeymoon, and optionally an evening of Rajasthani dance at Bagore ki Haveli. Overnight Udaipur. Day 8 (Udaipur): a day to do very little. The point of Udaipur. A long breakfast over the lake, the garden of Saheliyon ki Bari, a couple's spa or the pool, and the sunset from the Monsoon Palace above the city. No schedule to speak of. Overnight Udaipur. Day 9 (Udaipur): depart. A last lake morning, then fly out from Udaipur. The order flexes to the Friday Taj closure and the flight schedules. Trim to two Udaipur nights for a shorter trip, or add a night for a slower honeymoon; on a honeymoon, the extra Udaipur night is the one worth having.

The palace tier sits well above both: a single night at the Taj Lake Palace or Oberoi Udaivilas can cost more than several standard nights, so we quote it separately as the honeymoon centrepiece rather than blending it into a headline.
