What is the best route from Delhi to Amritsar?

The fastest and most popular route from Delhi to Amritsar runs northwest along the historic NH-44, the Grand Trunk Road, together with the opening sections of the new NE-5 expressway, covering about 450 km in around 7 hours. This has long been the main highway to Punjab, one of the oldest and most storied roads in Asia, passing through the flat, fertile plains and busy towns of Haryana and Punjab.

The drive is straightforward on good, mostly four-lane roads, with plenty of places to stop for fuel and the famous Punjabi dhaba food along the way, roadside eateries serving hearty parathas, dal and lassi that are part of the charm of the trip. It makes a pleasant and characterful road trip for those who enjoy the journey itself, though many travellers, given the distance, prefer the speed and comfort of the train or a flight. Which is best depends on how much you enjoy driving, how much luggage you have and how much time you have to spare on the journey itself.

The new Delhi to Amritsar expressway

An exciting development for this route is the new Delhi to Amritsar to Katra Expressway, the NE-5, a modern, high-speed, access-controlled greenfield expressway being built to dramatically cut travel times to Amritsar and the great Vaishno Devi pilgrimage town of Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. Here is where it stands:

  • Under construction, with sections open: the expressway is being built in stages or packages and major stretches have already opened, including a large section in Haryana inaugurated in mid-2026, along with sections near Jalandhar, so parts of it are already speeding up the journey towards Punjab.

  • Punjab the slower stretch: the sections through Punjab have been the main bottleneck and are still being completed, with full completion of the whole expressway targeted around 2027 and the dedicated spur to Amritsar itself a little later still.

  • A much faster future: once fully complete, the expressway is expected to cut the Delhi to Amritsar drive to around 4 hours, a huge improvement on the current 7 and Delhi to the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage town of Katra to roughly 6 to 7 hours, making it a game-changer for travel to Punjab and beyond.

  • Modern infrastructure: built for 120 km/h, fully access-controlled, with food courts, fuel and rest stops planned along the way, it will make the journey faster, safer and more comfortable than the old Grand Trunk Road.

As the expressway is still being built section by section, the exact route you take and the time it takes depend on which stretches are open when you travel, so the current drive is around 7 hours, easing gradually towards 4 hours as more of the expressway opens over the coming period. It is genuinely exciting news for anyone travelling to Punjab and a good reason to check the latest position when you plan, as the picture is changing month by month.

Other ways to travel from Delhi to Amritsar

Road is not the only option and for many the train or a flight is quicker and easier:

  • By train: Amritsar is very well connected to Delhi by rail, with the fastest trains, such as the Shatabdi Express, covering the journey in about 6 hours and many other trains besides throughout the day and night. The train is comfortable, scenic, popular and often the best and most relaxing option, dropping you right in the city at Amritsar Junction.

  • By air: direct flights from Delhi to Amritsar's Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport take about 1 hour 15 minutes, by far the quickest way to make the journey, ideal if you are short on time and want to maximise your days in the city.

  • By bus: overnight and daytime buses, including comfortable air-conditioned Volvo coaches, run regularly between Delhi and Amritsar, an economical and convenient option, with overnight buses saving you a hotel night.

For a quick trip, the flight or a fast train is usually best, saving you hours and arriving fresh; for a road trip, to travel on your own schedule or to enjoy the countryside and dhaba food along the way, the drive is rewarding. Many travellers fly or train one way and, if time allows, drive the other, to enjoy the best of both.

About Amritsar: why make the trip

Amritsar is one of India's most moving and memorable cities and well worth the journey from Delhi:

  • The Golden Temple: the Sri Harmandir Sahib, the holiest shrine of Sikhism, a breathtaking gold-covered temple set in the middle of a sacred pool of water, glowing serenely by day and beautifully lit by night and serving a vast free community kitchen or langar, that feeds tens of thousands of people of every faith each day.

  • The Wagah Border: the famous, theatrical Beating Retreat ceremony at the India to Pakistan border a short drive from the city, held each evening, a stirring, high-energy, patriotic spectacle of marching guards and cheering crowds.

  • Jallianwala Bagh: the poignant memorial garden marking the tragic events of 1919, a place of quiet reflection and remembrance just beside the Golden Temple, moving to visit.

  • The food: Amritsar is a paradise for Punjabi food, from the famous stuffed Amritsari kulcha and rich, thick lassi to hearty dhaba meals and the humbling, communal experience of the langar at the Golden Temple.

Between its profound spiritual heart, its poignant history and its wonderful, hearty food, Amritsar rewards every visitor richly and it leaves a deep and lasting impression on almost everyone who makes the journey, whatever their faith or background.

Best time to travel to Amritsar

The best time to visit Amritsar is October to March, when the weather in the plains of Punjab is pleasant and comfortable, ideal for the Golden Temple, the Wagah ceremony and exploring the city on foot, much as our best time to visit Delhi guide describes for the capital, as the two cities share a similar climate.

Summers, from April to June, are very hot in Punjab, so an early start and evening sightseeing help a great deal, while the monsoon from July to September brings some rain and humidity, along with lush green fields. Winter, from December to January, can be cold and foggy and dense fog can slow both the roads and the trains, so allow extra time then, especially for early departures. Whenever you go, the Golden Temple is beautiful at any time of year and especially magical when lit up and reflected in the pool after dark.

Combining Amritsar with your trip

Amritsar makes a wonderful addition to a wider North India trip:

  • With the Golden Triangle: many travellers add Amritsar to the classic Delhi, Agra and Jaipur circuit, flying or taking the fast train up from Delhi for a day or two, either before or after the Golden Triangle, for a fuller North India experience.

  • A spiritual and cultural extension: the Golden Temple and the Wagah Border add a moving, wholly different dimension to a trip otherwise focused on Mughal monuments, from Sikh devotion to a stirring border spectacle.

  • From Delhi: Delhi is the natural gateway to Amritsar, so it is easy to build the city into a trip starting or ending in the capital, pairing the Golden Temple with the sights in our things to do in Delhi guide.

We can plan the whole trip for you, the Golden Triangle and Amritsar together, with the travel between them, whether by road, rail or air, handled smoothly, so you move from the Mughal monuments to the Golden Temple without a hitch and enjoy two very different but equally unforgettable sides of North India in one journey.
