Nahargarh Fort Jaipur: Timings, Sunset & Entry 2026

Nahargarh is the fort you save for last. While Amber gives you the grand palace and the history, Nahargarh gives you the view: it sits high on the Aravalli ridge that rims Jaipur, and from its ramparts the whole pink grid of the city spreads out below, with the lake and Jal Mahal glinting to one side. Come for sunset, when the city turns gold and then lights up, and it is the most memorable hour of a Jaipur day. Here is how to time it.

Nahargarh is included in the two-day Jaipur composite ticket with Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal and others, so many visitors are already covered. The road up the ridge may have a small separate vehicle charge, and the wax museum inside is ticketed separately. Rates were revised in 2026, so confirm at the counter.

The view is the whole point. From the fort's high stone walls you look straight down over the grid that Jaipur's founder laid out in 1727, the walled old city, the domes and the sprawl beyond, and across to Man Sagar Lake with Jal Mahal sitting in it. It is the best panorama of the city anywhere, and photographers come specifically for it. Sunset is the prize hour, but a clear morning is beautiful too and much quieter. Give yourself time simply to sit and look.

Beyond the view, the fort holds Madhavendra Bhawan, a palace of linked suites built in the 1880s for the maharaja's queens, connected by corridors so he could visit each unseen by the others, worth a wander for its faded frescoes. There is a wax museum near the entrance, a well-known cafe and restaurant on the ramparts, and telescope viewing points. The fort has also featured in Hindi cinema, which many Indian visitors come to recognise. None of it takes long; the view is what holds you.

Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, as part of the ring of defences guarding his new city, together with Amber and Jaigarh forts along the same ridge. Its name means the abode of tigers. For a time it also served a scientific purpose, relaying the official time read from the Samrat Yantra at Jantar Mantar by means of a gunshot fired from the ramparts. The palace suites of Madhavendra Bhawan were added later, in the 1880s, by Sawai Ram Singh.

Nahargarh sits on the ridge about 6 km from central Jaipur, reached by a winding road up the hill by taxi or auto, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from the old city. Because it is the sunset stop, it works best at the end of the day, after a morning at Amber Fort along the same ridge and an afternoon in the old city. On the Golden Triangle, Jaipur is the leg after Agra and the Taj Mahal.
