The City Palace is where Jaipur's royal story is still being written, since the family that founded the city in 1727 lives here to this day. It is not one building but a walled complex of courtyards, gateways and museums in the heart of the old city, a short walk from Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal. The pull is partly the architecture, a blend of Rajput, Mughal and European styles, and partly the sense of a living palace rather than a ruin.

Hawa Mahal is the picture that says Jaipur: a five-storey wall of pink sandstone pierced by hundreds of tiny latticed windows, glowing at sunrise. What surprises most visitors is that the famous facade is the back of the building, designed to be seen from the street, and that the best experience is often from the cafe across the road rather than inside. It is small, central and quick, and with the right timing it is one of the most rewarding stops in the Pink City.

Jal Mahal is one of Jaipur's prettiest sights and one of its most misunderstood. Nearly everyone assumes they can go inside, or take a boat across to it, and nearly everyone is now wrong. It is a five-storey palace set in the middle of a lake, and today it is a view rather than a visit: you stop on the shore, take the photograph, and move on, usually on the way to or from Amber Fort. Knowing that in advance saves disappointment and turns it into exactly what it should be, a lovely ten-minute pause.

Jantar Mantar looks, at first glance, like a sculpture park, and that is exactly the trap. These are not abstract shapes but working astronomical instruments, built of stone at giant scale so they could measure time and track the heavens with the naked eye. The largest of them tells the time to within a couple of seconds using nothing but a shadow. Understood, it is one of the most remarkable places in Jaipur; unexplained, it can be baffling, which is why a guide matters here more than almost anywhere.

Nahargarh is the fort you save for last. While Amber gives you the grand palace and the history, Nahargarh gives you the view: it sits high on the Aravalli ridge that rims Jaipur, and from its ramparts the whole pink grid of the city spreads out below, with the lake and Jal Mahal glinting to one side. Come for sunset, when the city turns gold and then lights up, and it is the most memorable hour of a Jaipur day.
