Hawa Mahal Jaipur: Timings, Tickets & Best Photo 2026

Hawa Mahal is the picture that says Jaipur: a five-storey wall of pink sandstone pierced by hundreds of tiny latticed windows, glowing at sunrise. What surprises most visitors is that the famous facade is the back of the building, designed to be seen from the street, and that the best experience is often from the cafe across the road rather than inside. It is small, central and quick, and with the right timing it is one of the most rewarding stops in the Pink City. Here is how to do it well.

Hawa Mahal is included in the two-day Jaipur composite ticket along with Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar and others, so if you are seeing several monuments you may already be covered. Rates were revised in 2026, so confirm at the counter. Note that you do not need a ticket at all to photograph the famous facade, which is done from the public street opposite.

The shot everyone knows is taken not from inside but from across the road, looking back at the full facade. A row of rooftop cafes directly opposite exists largely for this view, and a coffee buys you the balcony and the classic angle. Come between about 9 and 11 AM for the morning light on the pink stone. This is worth knowing before you go, because many visitors queue to enter without realising the best photograph is from the street outside, ticket-free.

Whether to enter depends on what you want. From inside, you climb through five storeys, mostly by gentle ramps rather than stairs, to look out through the latticed windows the royal women once used to watch street processions unseen, and you get views over the old city and towards the City Palace. It is a quick, pleasant visit but a modest interior; the building's genius is its outward face. If you are short on time, the photo from across the road is the essential experience, and going inside is the optional extra.

Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, designed by the architect Lal Chand Ustad in the shape of the crown of the god Krishna. Its purpose was practical as well as beautiful: the 953 small latticed windows, or jharokhas, let the royal women of the palace observe the life and festivals of the street below while remaining unseen, in keeping with the customs of the day, and the honeycomb of openings funnels a cooling breeze, which gives the Palace of Winds its name. It is built of the pink sandstone that colours the whole old city.

Hawa Mahal is in the heart of the old city on the edge of the bazaars, a short taxi or auto ride from the railway station. Its location is its convenience: the City Palace and Jantar Mantar are within walking distance, so the three form a natural old-city cluster for the late morning or afternoon, after an early start at Amber Fort. Do them on foot once you are in the walled city.
