Experience My India runs the romantic circuit properly, from Rs 60,000 per person (6-day, 4 star, twin sharing), including the one thing that genuinely changes a honeymoon here: planning your dates around the moon rather than the flights. The Taj Mahal opens at night on five nights a lunar month: the full moon and the two nights either side. It is the most sold experience in Agra and the least honestly described, so here it is. You will stand on a red sandstone platform about 500 metres from the building, for thirty minutes, with up to forty-nine other people, having queued in person at a government office the day before, with no phone in your pocket. You cannot approach the mausoleum. You cannot photograph each other on a phone, because phones are not permitted. Video cameras, tripods, handbags and cigarettes are also out, and there is a full body check on the way in. And we think you should do it anyway. The marble genuinely changes under a full moon, the inlaid stones catch the light, and the crowd goes quiet. But you should book it knowing what it is, not what a brochure implied. Nobody else on the first page of Google will tell you about the 500 metres.

Five nights a lunar month. The full moon night, two before, two after. Not Fridays, and not during Ramzan, under a Supreme Court order that has governed night viewing since 2004. 400 people a night, total. Eight batches of fifty, thirty minutes each, running roughly from 20.00. Report at Shilpgram half an hour before your slot for security. Entry through the Eastern Gate only, after a body check. Luggage goes to a counter. Tickets cannot be bought online. They are sold in person at the Archaeological Survey of India office at 22 Mall Road, Agra, only the day before, roughly 10 am to 6 pm, first come first served, and they sell out. Carry ID: passport for foreign nationals. You stop 500 metres out. Access runs only as far as the red sandstone platform near the main gate. The building stays at a distance. Handheld still cameras and binoculars are allowed. Everything else, including your phone, is not. Our job is the calendar, the queue and the paperwork. Send us your wedding date before you book flights and we will tell you which nights fall in the window, because moving a honeymoon by two days is easy and moving the moon is not.

The Taj Mahal is a grave. Shah Jahan built it because Mumtaz Mahal died, and he was, by every account, undone by it. Work began in 1632 and the monument came together in its current form by 1653, with some twenty thousand artisans drawn from across India, Central Asia and Europe. Then his son Aurangzeb overthrew him and imprisoned him in Agra Fort, where he spent his last years looking at what he had built for her, from across the river, unable to reach it. He died in 1666 and was buried beside her. And here is the detail almost nobody knows: the actual graves of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz are in the basement, closed to the public, opened only for the three days of the annual Urs. What you see in the chamber above are cenotaphs. You cannot visit the two people the building is about. We tell couples this on purpose. 'Monument to eternal love' is true and it is also a postcard. What is actually there is grief, extraordinary craft, a man who lost a wife and then lost everything else, and two graves nobody is allowed to see. It is more moving than the slogan, and you will stand in front of it differently for knowing.

Honestly, and not in order of fame: The Taj at sunrise, on a non-Friday, in the first light, before the crowd thickens. Mehtab Bagh at sunset, the garden laid out across the Yamuna in 1652 for one purpose: looking at the Taj. It is quieter than the monument, and it is the better place to sit still together. The moonlight platform, knowing exactly what it is. The Baby Taj, which is small, uncrowded and covered in the inlay work you cannot photograph inside the Taj itself. Most couples like it more than they expect. Rooftops in Jaipur at the end of a hot day, which costs nothing and beats most things that do.

This is the same price as our non-honeymoon circuit at the same tier, and that is deliberate. The word 'honeymoon' attracts a surcharge across this industry for a trip that is materially identical. If you want a Taj-view room or a landmark hotel, that is a real cost and we will quote it honestly on our five-star and palace honeymoon pages. Rose petals on a bed are not a cost. Foreign nationals add about Rs 2,665 for the higher monument fees (Taj Rs 1,100 vs Rs 50, Agra Fort Rs 650 vs Rs 45, Fatehpur Sikri Rs 610 vs Rs 50, Amber Rs 550 vs Rs 100).
