Experience My India runs the Delhi, Agra and Jaipur circuit at the five-star tier from Rs 75,000 per person (5-day, twin sharing): properly good hotels, a comfortable car, licensed guides and pre-booked monuments. Before you book anything, the one thing this industry relies on you not knowing: 'five-star' on this circuit describes two completely different products, and the gap between them is enormous. There is the reliable five-star chain hotel, where a respected hotel guide's verdict on Agra's chain properties is exact and worth repeating: you get what you expect, a comfortable night's sleep, but it is just that, a night's sleep. And then there are the landmark hotels, the Oberoi Amarvilas with the Taj Mahal visible from every single room, or Jaipur's Rambagh Palace, where the hotel is the reason you came. Both get sold to you as 'five-star'. One costs roughly Rs 15,000 a day. The other can cost Rs 62,000 for a room, for one night. This page tells you which is which, what the money genuinely buys on this circuit, and the several things it cannot buy at any price.

The trap is simple. An operator writes 'five-star hotels' in the inclusions, you picture the Taj from your bath, and you arrive at a perfectly nice chain hotel by a ring road. Nobody lied. You just bought a word. Ask for the property names before you pay, always, including from us.

At the five-star tier on this circuit, honestly: Recovery. This trip involves a 3 to 4 hour drive to Agra and a 4 to 5 hour drive to Jaipur, monuments in the heat, and early starts. A proper pool, a quiet room and a good bed are worth more here than on most holidays. Reliable food and water. The single most trip-ruining thing in India is a stomach, and consistency has real value. Air conditioning that works, in April. Service that solves problems rather than explaining them.

The Taj on a Friday. It is closed to tourists every Friday. No hotel, no operator, no budget changes that. A cheaper ticket. Entry is Rs 1,100 for foreign nationals and Rs 50 for Indians whether you arrive from Amarvilas or a guesthouse. We print the fees rather than bury them in a package. Amber without steps. The base is reachable by vehicle; the upper interiors involve stairs regardless of what you paid. An elephant ride. We do not offer it at Amber at any tier, on welfare grounds. The jeep does the climb. A shorter Agra to Jaipur road. It is 4 to 5 hours in a car of any price. A private Taj Mahal. It is a working monument with thousands of visitors. Sunrise thins them; money does not.

One property earns its own paragraph, because its claim is real and unusual. The Oberoi Amarvilas sits 600 metres from the Taj Mahal and is the only luxury hotel in Agra with unrestricted Taj views from every room and suite, not from selected rooms at a premium. It is built as a Mughal-inspired palace with terraced lawns, reflection pools and pavilions, has a butler service, and runs a complimentary golf cart to the Taj if you would rather not walk the 600 metres. It is also expensive and variable: published rates swing widely by room and date, and one traveller reports paying about Rs 62,000 for a single night. If it is within reach, one night there is a better use of money than upgrading every hotel on the trip, because it is the only one that changes what you actually see.
