Experience My India runs the Delhi, Agra and Jaipur circuit through genuinely historic buildings, from Rs 90,000 per person (6-day, heritage tier, twin sharing), routed so a 15th-century fort-palace breaks the Delhi to Jaipur drive instead of a motorway service stop. Two things almost nobody selling 'palace tours' will tell you, and both change what you book. First: 'heritage hotel' is an official classification, not an adjective. India's Ministry of Tourism defines it precisely: a hotel built in a palace, castle, fort, haveli, hunting lodge or royal residence constructed prior to 1950, with the facade and architecture genuinely preserved. There are grades, and the top grade, Heritage Grand, requires a building from before 1920. So you can simply ask a property which classification it holds. Marketing cannot answer that question; paperwork can. Second: you cannot sleep in a palace in Agra. There isn't one. Agra's finest hotel is Mughal-inspired and was built in the 1990s, which is a different and honourable thing. A real palace circuit is a Jaipur circuit with a fort on the road in, and we would rather route around that truth than pretend.

None of these is a bad choice. Buying the third while believing it is the first is the mistake, and it is an easy one to make when every brochure uses the same twelve adjectives.

This is the part that genuinely reverses expectations. Heritage is not a synonym for expensive; it is a synonym for old, and old is sometimes cheap. If your budget is mid-range and your taste is not, this is the single best-value idea on this website.

Most operators run Delhi to Agra to Jaipur and back, which leaves the Delhi to Jaipur highway as dead mileage at the end. For a heritage trip we usually reverse it, because Neemrana Fort Palace sits directly on that highway, roughly two hours from Delhi. Going anticlockwise turns the worst drive of the trip into an afternoon in a 15th-century fort. You still get Fatehpur Sikri and the Chand Baori stepwell, which sit on the Agra to Jaipur leg in either direction, and you still put the Taj at sunrise on a non-Friday. You just stop sleeping next to a motorway.
