Experience My India adds Udaipur to the circuit properly, from Rs 80,000 per person (8-day, 4 star, twin sharing), with the Lake Palace quoted separately because it is a hotel rather than a sight. Two facts govern this honeymoon and neither is on the postcard. One: you cannot visit the Taj Lake Palace. It sits on Jag Niwas Island in the middle of Lake Pichola and the only way there is a private boat from a jetty near the City Palace, which runs for hotel guests. No ticket, no tour, no exception, other than an expensive dinner reservation. If you have not booked a room, you look at it from the water like everybody else. It is not a monument. It is somebody's hotel, and the fact that it is the most photographed building in Udaipur does not change that. Two: the lake is man-made, and in a dry season the water can disappear completely. Pichola is artificial and depends on the monsoon arriving. One luxury specialist's advice is blunt and worth repeating: for the best experience of the Lake Palace, go before March. Which produces the irony this page exists to explain: the months when the lake is fullest are the monsoon months most travellers avoid, and the perfect-weather months at the end of the dry season are when the floating palace has the least water to float on.

The thing nobody explains, and it makes sense of the whole city in one line. The Mewar rulers built for the weather: City Palace, on the bank, was the winter palace. Lake Palace, on the island, was the summer palace, built to escape the Rajasthani heat, with the water doing the cooling. Monsoon Palace, up the hill, was for the monsoon. Which tells you something useful: the Lake Palace was designed for the season you are least likely to visit in, and its whole logic depends on there being a lake.

Pichola is not a natural lake. It is man-made and it relies on a good monsoon each year. The consequences are real and nobody selling you a 'floating palace honeymoon' mentions them: July to September: the lake is at its fullest. Boats can be affected by heavy rain, but the palace genuinely floats. October to February: the reliable window. Good weather and enough water. March onward: the level drops. One luxury operator's guidance is simply to visit before March. A poor monsoon year: the water can go entirely, and the marble palace stands in a bed of mud. We will check the recent monsoon before you book, and tell you if the year has been bad. That is not a service anyone else offers because it is not a conversation anyone else wants to have.

Here is the honest recommendation, and it is not the expensive one. Take the public Lake Pichola boat at sunset. You get the white marble facade at the hour it is best, the Aravalli hills behind it, Jag Mandir on the other island, and the City Palace wall going gold. It costs very little. For most people it is the memory, and the people paying to sleep inside the building are looking at a view of the shore. Then, if the budget is there, take one night at the Lake Palace and understand what you are buying: a four-acre island built between 1743 and 1746 as a summer retreat, a jetty check-in with the lake in front of you, a private launch, and a small hotel of roughly 65 rooms with nowhere to go. Some people find that transporting. Some find it isolating; it is an island and you cannot walk anywhere. Know which of you is which before you book two nights.

Udaipur is not on the Golden Triangle. Braj sits on the Delhi to Agra road and Neemrana sits on the Delhi to Jaipur road, so both are stops. Udaipur is not. It is a genuine detour and it needs its own days. Fly. Udaipur's Maharana Pratap airport takes internal flights from Delhi and Mumbai, with Delhi about an hour away by air. From the airport it is roughly 40 to 50 minutes by car to the jetty, then about five minutes on the water. A honeymoon has better uses for a day than a highway.
