Experience My India runs the circuit out to Ajmer and Pushkar, from Rs 70,000 per person (7-day, 4 star, twin sharing), with two nights by the lake rather than a coach stop. One thing needs saying before anything else, because it will happen to you within minutes of reaching the ghats and because the guidebooks warn about it without ever explaining it. A man will put flowers in your right hand and tell you he wants nothing. That is the opening move. He then directs you to the lake to scatter the petals, follows to make sure you reach a particular ghat, and introduces you to a Brahmin. You are sat down, led through incantations, and at the end asked to donate, with figures in the thousands. Refuse, and in the accounts we found repeatedly, other men arrive to stand over you. On completion a red thread is tied to your wrist. Locals call it the Pushkar passport, and it works: wearing one, the pushy priests leave you alone and you can walk the ghats unbothered. The counter is one sentence: do not accept the flowers. Say no clearly, do not take them, keep walking. The transaction begins the instant they touch your hand.

Most travel pages either ignore this or treat every priest in Pushkar as a thief. Both are wrong, and the second is worse. Here is the honest position. Pushkar Puja is a real ritual: you repeat prayers and scatter rose petals on one of India's holiest lakes, and a donation is customary and often goes to temple funds or to a priest who genuinely lives on it. Many of the men who approach you are true priests. Many others are not, and the guidebooks lump them together because it is easier than explaining the difference. The difference is not the ritual. It is the coercion and the number. A genuine puja does not begin with a stranger palming flowers onto you and shepherding you to a specific ghat. It does not end with a demand for thousands of rupees and men arriving to stand over you when you decline. That is not a religious objection to donating; it is an objection to being frightened into it. So: Refuse the flowers. Politely, clearly, and keep walking. Nothing that follows can start if this does not. If you want to do the puja, do it deliberately, and let us arrange it with someone accountable rather than someone who found you. Decide your donation before you sit down, and do not be moved off it. Being led from a temple to a 'donation counter' is a known pattern. Reported expectations there run far beyond reasonable. The red thread genuinely works. If you have done a puja, wear it. It is the cheapest peace on the ghats.

Ajmer holds the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the most significant Sufi shrine in India and a place of pilgrimage for people of many faiths. One thing we will always tell you before you book, not at the door: access rules at working shrines are set by the institutions, they differ from shrine to shrine, and they change. At Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi, for example, women are traditionally not permitted beyond the outer verandah at the saint's tomb, as our sacred Delhi page explains. Ajmer's arrangements are its own. What we will not do anywhere is sell you priority access. At these shrines the queue is the queue.

The whole town is vegetarian and dry. No meat, no eggs, no alcohol, officially, everywhere. If that is a problem, it is better known now than at dinner. 52 ghats surround the lake, Brahma Ghat and Varaha Ghat the best known among them. Shoes come off at a reverential distance from the water, not at the edge. No photography at the ghats, and no smoking. This is not a viewpoint; it is where people bathe and pray. Sunrise and sunset are the hours for the lake, and the rooftop cafes above the main road are where you sit between them. The town is small and best walked. You will not need a car inside it. Pushkar has become commercial, which is honest to say and worth setting your expectations by. It is still one of the holiest lakes in India, sacred to Hindus and Sikhs, and both things are true at once.

It is roughly 14th century and it is the most important temple to Brahma anywhere, which matters because Brahma, despite being the creator, has very few temples at all. Pushkar itself is called Adi Teerth and Teertharaj, the ancient holy place and the king of holy places. It is also small and plain. Visitors expecting grandeur to match the reputation report seeing the deity for a few seconds and being back outside. That is not a failure of the temple; it is a mismatch with what the internet implied. Come for what it is: the only major seat of a god almost nobody builds for. Ajmer and Pushkar cost almost nothing to enter. What you are paying for is the road, the nights and a guide who knows the difference between a priest and a performance.
