Experience My India adds Braj to the circuit properly, from Rs 60,000 per person (6-day, 4 star, twin sharing), with two nights in Krishna's country rather than a rushed afternoon. Begin with the geography, because it settles the whole question of whether this is a detour. It is not. Mathura sits on the Delhi to Agra road, roughly 150 km from Delhi down the Yamuna Expressway, with Vrindavan about 12 km further. Every Golden Triangle in India drives past Krishna's birthplace on the way to the Taj Mahal. Most do not stop. The ones that do give it four hours, which is how visitors end up standing outside a locked temple at one in the afternoon. That is the second thing this page exists to prevent, and the first is stranger. At Banke Bihari, the curtain closes every minute or two, on purpose, forever. You will not get a long, unbroken look at the deity. Not because you came on a bad day or stood in the wrong place, but because the tradition holds that Bihariji's gaze is so charged with love that continuous darshan would overwhelm the devotee. This interrupted jhanki darshan is unique to this temple. Visitors who have not been told feel short-changed. Visitors who have been told understand they are watching the thing itself.

Banke Bihari was founded in 1864 by Swami Haridas, the saint-musician who taught Tansen. The deity was found in the nearby Nidhivan forest, and is worshipped as Haridas preferred: without bells or conches, only with soft devotional song. So two expectations need dismantling before you go: There is no aarti spectacle here. No fixed aarti, no jhula, none of the choreographed evening theatre that the big temples are known for. If you have come for a show, you have come to the wrong temple, and Vrindavan has others that will oblige. There is no long darshan. The curtain is drawn every minute or two. You get glimpses. That is the practice, not a queue-management failure, and no amount of money or influence changes it. We would rather you arrived understanding this. Half the disappointment reported about Vrindavan is really a mismatch of expectation, and it is entirely preventable with two paragraphs.

Midday is closed. The temple shuts around noon and reopens late afternoon. A day trip that leaves Delhi at nine and arrives at one sees a locked door. This alone is why we give Braj two nights. Leather is banned, not just phones and cameras. Belts, wallets, handbags, camera straps. Leave them with the driver or in a locker before you walk in. Vehicles cannot reach the temple. It sits in a narrow lane; the last stretch is on foot or by e-rickshaw, and your driver drops you as close as the lanes allow. At Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, phones and bags go into a free locker counter before the inner sanctum, under security protocols. Plan for it rather than argue with it. Dress is stricter than it looks. Shoulders and knees covered, for everyone. A light dupatta or shawl solves it without packing more clothes. Weekday mornings. And the famous days, Holi and Janmashtami, are the hardest days to actually see anything. If darshan is your purpose, do not come for the festival. Vrindavan has a large community of widows living in its ashrams, many of them abandoned. They are not a sight, and we do not take you to look at them. If you want to help, we will point you to organisations that do the work properly; we will not build an afternoon out of somebody's circumstances. The same rule governs this trip as our street photography work: hardship is not an itinerary item. We also do not sell priority darshan. Entry is free, the line is the line, and anyone offering to move you up it is selling something that is not theirs.

Braj itself is nearly free. The temples charge nothing, and what you are paying for is the days, the car, the guide and above all the timing, which is the difference between darshan and a locked door. Foreign nationals add about Rs 2,665 for the higher monument fees at Agra and Jaipur (Taj Rs 1,100 vs Rs 50, Agra Fort Rs 650 vs Rs 45, Fatehpur Sikri Rs 610 vs Rs 50, Amber Rs 550 vs Rs 100).
