The monuments are the trip. The balloon, the bikes and the village nights are what stop it being a coach tour. The big adventure operators sell the Golden Triangle as a culture trip where the balloon is an optional extra, then pair it with Ladakh, Kashmir or the Himalayan foothills when they want to sell adventure. If your priority is rafting, high passes or trekking, the honest answer is a longer trip where this circuit is the first four days.

The Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri, on the Agra to Jaipur leg, is a free bonus for anyone who likes a descent: a deep, symmetrical well you look down into rather than climb, and one of the circuit's best stops. Jeep safaris at Ranthambore sit in our wildlife cluster rather than here, and no operator can promise you a tiger.

If the balloon is why you are coming, book the trip around this rather than hoping. Flights run roughly from 1 September to 30 April, last about an hour, and go at dawn when the air is stable. There are no flights across the monsoon and the height of summer, so a May-to-August trip cannot include one at any price. Flights are also weather-cancellable on the morning, so ask what happens to your money if the wind is wrong, and never book the balloon for your last morning before a flight home.

October to March is the circuit's window, and it overlaps almost exactly with the balloon season. This is when everything works. September and April are shoulder, still flyable, warmer, quieter, cheaper. May and June regularly pass 40C. Cycling, walking and standing in an open fort are genuinely unwise, and we will say so rather than sell you a heatstroke. July to September is monsoon: no balloons, and rural rides get muddy. The countryside is green and the crowds are gone, which some people love.
