Experience My India breaks the Delhi, Agra and Jaipur circuit with a night in rural Rajasthan, from Rs 50,000 per person (5-day, 4 star, twin sharing): a fire after dinner, a sky with actual stars in it, a bike ride out to the village, and a morning that starts with birds instead of horns. Now the honest part, because the phrase 'village stay' does a lot of work in this industry: on this circuit it almost always means a comfortable tented camp near a village, not a night in a family's spare room. The tents have beds, electricity and en-suite bathrooms. There is often a pool. That is a good thing, and you should know it before you book rather than after. The second honest thing matters more. The village next door is not an attraction, and the people in it are not staff. One rural-stay operator puts it better than we could: this is not a cultural park, so do not expect them to dance and sing for you, because they are real people with real stories. What makes this night worth doing is that it is quiet, warm and ordinary. What would make it worth avoiding is treating a working village as a photo opportunity. Marketing implies mud walls and a family kitchen. The reality on this circuit, at the properties that actually take international guests, is closer to comfortable camping in a garden: The tents are not camping as you know it. Beds, electricity, en-suite bathrooms. One guest describes the whole thing as an oasis of calm between the tourist sites of the circuit, with a pool, good food, and a fire lit outside after dinner. The village is separate. You go out to it, usually on a bike or on foot with someone from the camp, meet people if they want to meet you, see how the area works, and come back. A genuine homestay in a family home also exists, and it is a different, simpler, closer experience. If that is what you want, say so and we will be straight with you about the trade-offs in comfort. Do not book one expecting the pool. Neither version is better. But being sold the first while imagining the second is how people end up disappointed, and it is why we spell it out here.

This is the practical lever almost nobody publishes. Rajasthan runs a formal Homestay (Paying Guest House) Scheme, updated in 2026, and a registered unit is a checkable thing rather than a claim. Under it, a registered homestay: is capped at 8 rooms and 24 beds, which keeps it family-scale rather than a hotel calling itself a homestay must have attached bathrooms, adequate water and electricity, and ventilation must meet fire safety and sanitation norms must keep a guest register, and is approved through the state tourism department or a Tourist Reception Centre So the question to ask any operator, including us, is simple: is the property registered, and can you show me? A place that cannot answer is not necessarily bad, but you are relying purely on trust. We would rather hand you the question than hope you never ask it.

The village is someone's home and workplace. Our rules, and we hold guests to them: Ask before photographing anyone. Always, including children. A refusal is a complete answer. Do not hand out sweets, pens or money to children. It teaches begging from tourists and undermines the school. If you want to help, ask the camp how to support the village properly. No performances. We do not arrange dancing or singing 'for the guests' unless it is a genuine occasion people are already having. The village must be paid. Our condition for running this at all is that the host village and the people who guide you into it are genuinely and fairly paid, not thanked. You are not visiting poverty. Rural Rajasthan is not a hardship exhibit. If the appeal is seeing how 'the poor' live, this is not the trip for you.
