The mistake is treating Varanasi like another sightseeing stop. It is not. If you want a calm, easy end to your trip, Varanasi is the wrong finale, and we will say so. If you want the single most powerful experience in India, it is exactly the right one, and it rewards being ready for it.

Honestly, given two nights and a guide who knows the ghats: The dawn boat on the Ganges. Before six, when the mist sits on the water and the city wakes to prayer along the ghats, is the defining Varanasi experience, and it is quiet in a way the rest of the day is not. The evening Ganga aarti. At Dashashwamedh Ghat, seven priests perform a 45-minute fire ritual with lamps, incense, bells and chanting, best seen from a boat on the water rather than the crush on the steps. Sarnath. Twelve kilometres north, where the Buddha gave his first teaching after enlightenment, one of the four holiest sites in Buddhism, and a calm counterpoint to the old city. The living old city. The lanes to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, the Banarasi silk weavers at their looms, and a city that has been continuously lived in for millennia.

A sanitised Varanasi. The cremation ghats are working, sacred sites, not a spectacle to be softened. We prepare you and guide you respectfully; we do not pretend the city is something gentler than it is. A private aarti or a quiet old city. The crowds are part of it. A boat gives you the best vantage on the aarti; nothing empties the ghats. The Taj on a Friday. Closed to tourists every Friday, at every price. We sequence it onto another day. A cheaper ticket. Monument fees are the same whatever hotel you left, and we print them rather than bury them. An elephant ride at Amber. We do not offer it at any tier, on welfare grounds. The jeep does the climb. A drivable Varanasi. It is far east; from Delhi it is a short flight against a very long road or overnight train, so we fly it and use the saved time in the city.

In most cities the hotel is where you sleep. In Varanasi, one address is part of the experience itself. BrijRama Palace is an 1812 palace that rises directly from Darbhanga Ghat on the Ganges, reached by a short boat transfer because no road reaches it, a few minutes' walk from the Dashashwamedh Ghat aarti and the Kashi Vishwanath temple, now run under the Taj group. Waking on the river and stepping onto the ghats from your own palace is the sort of thing money genuinely buys here, and we quote it as a named palace upgrade rather than implying a standard hotel offers the same. On the standard tier we use a strong, comfortable base and are honest that it is a hotel near the river, not a palace on it. There is also the Taj Nadesar Palace, a garden-estate palace away from the ghats, for those who want the calm rather than the river.

We print the four-star line deliberately. The four-star trip sees the identical monuments, ghats and aarti, on the same flight, with the same guides; the honest difference is the hotel. The palace tier, above all, is where BrijRama Palace on the ghats sits, and a night there can cost more than several standard nights, so we quote it separately as a named upgrade rather than blending it into a headline price. Foreign nationals add roughly Rs 2,900 for the higher monument fees (Taj Rs 1,100 vs Rs 50, Agra Fort Rs 650 vs Rs 50, Amber Rs 500 vs Rs 100, Fatehpur Sikri, plus the Sarnath museum and stupa in Varanasi). Foreigners also pay a Rs 500 ADA toll at Agra, waived on Fridays. OCI cardholders pay Indian rates with the physical card; under-15s enter the Taj free. Single supplement per day.
