The reason the 'free' trip can exist at all is that it is not free. The kickback that pays your driver and guide has to come from somewhere, and it comes from you, in a price marked up to cover it. Remove the commission and the incentive to sell you the wrong stone at the wrong price largely disappears. That is the whole idea.

None of this is to say do not buy. Jaipur is the real thing, and worth buying in: Coloured stones, especially emeralds. Jaipur is one of the world's great cutting and trading centres for coloured gemstones. Much of the fine emerald you see in luxury stores abroad passed through here. Heritage jewellery. Kundan, Meenakari enamel, Jadau and Polki are Jaipur traditions with few equals anywhere, and Johari Bazaar and Gopalji ka Rasta are their historic home. Silver, at scale. Jaipur is a major exporter of sterling silver jewellery to Europe and America; a great deal of what sells in Western boutiques was made here. Design. The city's workshops are genuine innovators, and a custom piece made to your design is one of the best things you can bring home. Bought well, from the right maker at an honest price, Jaipur jewellery is a joy and often a genuine value. The problem is never the city. It is the layer of commission-driven selling wrapped around it for tourists.

So you can recognise them: The resale con. The promise that you can buy gems here and sell them at home for several hundred percent profit. There is no such market open to you. This is the single most damaging pitch, and it is always false. Treated or synthetic sold as natural. Industry surveys have found that around a quarter of tourists buying loose stones in Rajasthan were sold treated or imitation gems at natural-stone prices, and that a large share of 'rubies' in tourist shops turned out to be garnet or glass. Fake or influenced certificates. A certificate from a lab that does not exist, or one that has been arranged. Only a few labs are worth trusting, which is why we use independent certification, not the shop's. Bait and switch. A fine stone is shown, and a cheaper one is swapped in when the piece is packed or resized. Watch the stone through the whole process. Silver sold as gold, and the shipping delay. Silver passed off as gold, and offers to 'ship it to you later,' which mostly serve to delay the moment you discover the problem.

It helps to see the machine. Almost any taxi, autorickshaw or guide can earn from taking you to a shop: a small fee for bringing you through the door, and a much larger cut, often a third to a half of the sale, if you buy. That is why a driver suddenly wants to show you 'his uncle's' gem business, why a guide steers you to one particular jeweller, and why the prices in those shops must be high enough to pay everyone in the chain and still profit. The commission is not a tip; it is the reason the whole encounter exists. A guide who refuses commission has no reason to take you anywhere but the honest shop.

This is the method, and it is the thing a commission-earning guide cannot offer: We are paid by you, a flat fee, and we say so in writing. We take nothing from any shop, so we have no reason to push a sale or a particular stone. You choose from vetted, licensed jewellers, and you can veto any of them. No 'uncle's shop,' no detours, no pressure. Every stone of value is independently certified before you pay. GIA, IGI or BIS as appropriate, with any treatment disclosed in writing, arranged through a lab we do not control. We translate and explain, not sell. What Kundan is versus Polki, what 'treated' means for an emerald, what a fair price looks like, so you decide with information rather than pressure. We tell you when not to buy. If the piece is wrong or the price is off, we say so, which is the one thing a commissioned guide never will.

This advice is free and holds anywhere: Buy what you love to keep, never for resale. The moment 'profit' or 'investment' enters the pitch, walk away. Insist on independent certification from GIA, IGI or, for gold purity, BIS hallmarking, and get any treatment stated in writing. A genuine jeweller will certify if asked, even if it takes a day. Pay by credit card, not cash, for a record and some recourse. Be wary of any guide or driver who insists on a shop. That insistence usually means a commission. Do not be rushed. 'Limited-time' and 'closing today' are pressure tactics, not facts. Watch your stone through resizing and packing to avoid a switch.

Gem and jewellery value is genuinely subjective and market-driven. Our job is to remove the con and the pressure so your money buys what it is supposed to, a piece you love at an honest price.

The certification lab charges its own fee, paid to the lab. Everything else about our role is the flat fee above. We would rather be paid a clear, modest amount by you than a large hidden amount by a shop, and we say so precisely because most of this trade does the opposite.
