The Golden Temple is open to everyone, of every faith, twenty-four hours a day, at no cost, and its kitchen feeds more than 100,000 people a day for nothing. That second fact reframes the whole trip. On the Golden Triangle you pay for monuments; in Amritsar the headline experience costs nothing, and no upgrade improves it. What money buys here is a comfortable hotel and the transfers, not the temple. Honestly, given two nights and a good guide: The Golden Temple, twice. Illuminated and reflected in the Amrit Sarovar at night, and again at dawn as the city wakes to prayer, these are two different experiences, and both stay with you. The shrine is covered in 750 kilograms of gold, its foundation stone laid by a Muslim Sufi saint as a deliberate sign of universal brotherhood. The langar. You can sit on the floor of the world's largest free kitchen and eat the same simple meal as everyone else, served by volunteers to more than 100,000 people a day without a rupee changing hands. It is the most quietly radical thing you will see in India. Jallianwala Bagh. A few minutes' walk from the temple, the garden where British troops fired on an unarmed crowd in 1919, with the bullet marks and the well preserved. The proximity of the two sites, devotion and colonial violence within one morning, is the whole argument of modern Indian history in a single walk. Wagah, and the food. The border ceremony at sunset, and a city that is Punjab's food capital: Amritsari kulcha, tandoori chicken, and lassi at institutions like Kesar Da Dhaba.

A better Golden Temple. It is free and open to all, and no hotel or tier improves the experience of it. The luxury is your bed and your car, not the shrine. A quiet Wagah. The ceremony draws thousands. Arriving early gets you a seat rather than a big screen; nothing makes it serene. A palace in Amritsar. Unlike Rajasthan, there is no palace hotel here. The best is a modern 5-star, and we will not dress that up as something it is not. The Taj on a Friday. Closed to tourists every Friday, at every price. We sequence it onto another day. A drivable Amritsar. It is 450 km northwest of Delhi, so we fly or fast-train it and keep the day in the city rather than on the highway. An elephant ride at Amber. We do not offer it at any tier, on welfare grounds. The jeep does the climb.

Its four doors face four directions as a sign that it is open to all, and its kitchen has never stopped feeding whoever arrives. For a hotel, Amritsar's best is the modern Taj Swarna, about fifteen minutes from the temple, comfortable and well run, and we quote it or a strong 5-star as your base. But we say plainly what is true here and rarely elsewhere: the finest thing on this leg is the one that costs nothing.
