The distances are real: about 230 km from Delhi to Agra and 240 km from Agra to Jaipur. Here is how many days it actually takes to enjoy rather than endure, and what each extra day buys you.

Four days and three nights is the length most people should book. It gives a full day in each of the three cities and absorbs the two travel legs without either becoming a write-off. You can do it in three days if you are short on time and willing to move fast and skip the edges, and you should give it five or six if you want a relaxed pace or a fourth destination. Fewer than three days is not really the Golden Triangle; it is a Taj day trip with extras.

The classic four-day plan
The standard four-day circuit runs like this. Day one is Delhi, seeing Old and New Delhi. Day two drives to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, with sunset from Mehtab Bagh. How long each city needs
Delhi comfortably fills one full day for the highlights of the old and new city, and takes two if you want to go deeper into its markets, temples and museums. Agra needs one full day for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, though an overnight is better, because it lets you catch both sunset and sunrise and add Fatehpur Sikri, as our overnight tour does. Jaipur needs one full day for Amber Fort and the old city, and rewards a second if you want the hill forts and a slower look. That is the arithmetic behind the four-day minimum.
Adding a fourth stop
If you have five or six days, the Golden Triangle opens up. The most popular extension is Ranthambore National Park, about a three to four hour drive from Jaipur, for a chance to see wild tigers, which adds two days well. Udaipur, the lake city of Rajasthan, is a longer hop but a beautiful, romantic addition for those with a week. Others add Varanasi by a short flight for the spiritual heart of India.
