Officially, its inner and outer rings are named Rajiv Chowk and Indira Chowk, though everyone still calls it CP, or Connaught Place. Designed by the British architect Robert Tor Russell and built between 1929 and 1933, it was named after the Duke of Connaught, and its elegant white colonnades, arches and radial blocks have made it one of Delhi's most recognisable and beloved landmarks for nearly a century.

Connaught Place timings and access

CP keeps long daily hours, though individual shops vary.

CP is generally open from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with the restaurants, cafes and bars staying open latest, well into the night, though some individual shops open and close a little earlier, by around 8:00 PM, and a few close on Sundays. As a public commercial area, there is no entry charge; you simply wander in. It is busiest and liveliest in the evenings, when the shops, cafes and nightlife are all in full swing and the arcades fill with people.

How to reach Connaught Place

• By metro: the nearest station is Rajiv Chowk, which sits directly beneath CP and connects the Blue and Yellow lines, so the metro brings you right into the heart of it. This is by far the easiest way to arrive.

• By road: autos, ride-hailing cabs and buses reach CP easily from across the city, given its central location, though parking is limited and traffic heavy.

• On foot: once at CP, everything is walkable around the circles, and many nearby sights are within walking distance.

Given its central location and the busy interchange metro station right beneath it, CP is one of the easiest places in all of Delhi to reach, from anywhere on the metro network, and a natural hub from which to start or end a day in the city.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Connaught Place is from October to March, when Delhi's weather is pleasant for walking in the circles and markets. During the day, CP is busiest and most atmospheric in the late afternoon and evening, when the shops are all open, the cafes fill up, and the nightlife gets going, so an evening visit is especially lively.

Summers, from April to June, are hot, though the shops, cafes and the air-conditioned Palika Bazaar offer welcome respite, and the evenings are cooler and pleasant for a stroll. The monsoon can be lively too, with the arcades offering shelter from the rain. Note that some shops close on Sundays, so a weekday or Saturday visit ensures everything is open. Whenever you go, CP rewards an unhurried wander, and there is no need to rush, part of its pleasure is simply lingering over a coffee and taking in the scene.
