Shekhawati is one of Rajasthan's most distinctive and least-crowded corners. In the 18th and 19th centuries, when the region's rulers cut trade taxes and drew the caravan routes through, wealthy Marwari merchants grew rich and poured their fortunes into building lavish painted mansions — havelis — each with courtyards, carved doorways, mirror work and, above all, frescoes covering every wall. Hundreds survive across the market towns, making the whole region an open-air gallery. It is a completely different flavour from the forts and palaces of the triangle: intimate, faded, human-scale, and full of stories. One to two days sees the best of it, and it sits perfectly on the way to the desert.

Nawalgarh. Often called the heart of Shekhawati, with the finest frescoes, the Podar Haveli Museum (built 1902 and beautifully restored) and the Morarka Haveli Museum among the highlights. Mandawa. A smaller, village-like town with dozens of painted havelis and a fort (now a heritage hotel, Castle Mandawa), a favourite base for a night. Fatehpur. Home to the Nadine Le Prince Haveli, restored by a French artist as a cultural centre (entry about Rs 200), a striking example of what careful restoration can recover. Dundlod and Jhunjhunu. More havelis, an old palace, and, at Jhunjhunu, the regional capital's temples and markets. The frescoes themselves. Look for the charming Raj-era murals — trains, motor cars, gramophones and aeroplanes painted by artists who had often never seen them, sitting beside gods and epic scenes.
