What is the best route from Delhi to Jim Corbett?
The best and fastest route from Delhi to Jim Corbett is via NH9, the main highway that runs east and north from Delhi through Moradabad and Rampur to Ramnagar, the gateway town for the park, at about 275 km and around 6 hours. It is a straightforward drive across the plains for most of the way, before reaching the edge of the forested foothills.
The journey is a fairly comfortable and straightforward one on good highways for most of the way, with the main variable being the traffic getting out of Delhi itself, so an early morning start helps you clear the city quickly and reach Corbett in good time and good spirits. Ramnagar, the busy little town at the end of the drive, is the hub from which the various park zones and their separate entry gates are reached, most of them a short further drive away through the surrounding countryside.
Ways to travel from Delhi to Jim Corbett
Jim Corbett is well connected from Delhi and there are several good ways to make the journey:
By road: by private car or taxi, taking around 6 hours on the fast NH9. The most flexible and popular option by far, letting you reach your jungle lodge and the various park gates directly with your luggage and much the easiest and most convenient for a wildlife trip.
By train: trains run from Delhi to Ramnagar, the railhead right beside the park, including convenient overnight and morning services, a restful, scenic and popular way to reach Corbett without the drive.
By air: you can fly to Pantnagar airport, about 80 km away, though flights there are limited and weather-dependent, then drive on to the park, an option worth considering when time is short.
For most travellers, a private car is the easiest and most flexible way, especially for reaching your lodge and the safari gates, while the train to Ramnagar is a good, restful alternative.
About Jim Corbett: India's oldest national park
Jim Corbett National Park holds a very special and important place in India's natural history, as the oldest national park in the whole country, established back in 1936 and the very first park to come under Project Tiger, India's landmark national tiger-conservation programme, launched here in 1973. It is named after Jim Corbett himself, the famous hunter who later became a great conservationist, author and champion of these forests and their tigers.
Set in the lush, green, densely forested foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas, along the winding Ramganga river, the park is a beautiful and wonderfully varied landscape of dense sal forest, wide open grassland or chaur, river, lakes, ravines and hills. It is above all famous as one of the very best places in all of India to see wild Bengal tigers in their natural home and is also home to a large and thriving population of wild elephants, along with leopards, deer, crocodiles, otters and a truly wonderful wealth of over six hundred species of birdlife. A jungle safari here is a thrilling, exhilarating, back-to-nature escape and a wonderful, refreshing contrast to the heat, cities and monuments of the plains.
The safaris and what to see
The jungle safari is the heart of any Corbett visit and it helps to understand how it works:
The safaris: the safaris run once in the early morning and once in the afternoon, in open vehicles, either a small, nimble jeep, known locally as a Gypsy or a larger shared canter, always accompanied by a guide and driver who know the forest well and where the animals move.
The zones: the park is divided into several distinct zones, each entered from its own separate gate and each with its own landscape, character and resident wildlife, so different zones on different safaris offer genuinely different experiences.
Booking ahead: safari permits and zone entries are strictly limited in number and in very high demand, especially in the peak season and at weekends, so they must be booked well in advance to secure a place, which is exactly the kind of thing we handle for you.
What you may see: besides the famous tigers, you may spot herds of wild elephants, elusive leopards, sambar and spotted deer, marsh crocodiles and gharial, playful otters, wild boar and hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds, all in beautiful riverside and forest surroundings.
A tiger sighting can never be guaranteed, as these are genuinely wild animals roaming a vast forest, but Corbett consistently offers among the very best chances anywhere in India. Even on a drive without a tiger, the herds of wild elephants, the rich birdlife, the beautiful Ramganga river and the atmospheric jungle itself make every single safari rewarding and memorable in its own right. Doing two or more safaris, ideally across different zones, noticeably improves your chances of that unforgettable sighting.
The zones of Corbett
The park has several safari zones, each reached from Ramnagar and worth knowing when planning:
Dhikala: the largest, most famous and most sought-after zone of all, set deep in the very heart of the park, with its own historic forest rest house where you can stay overnight inside the jungle itself, offering by far the fullest, wildest and most immersive Corbett experience.
Bijrani: a beautiful and hugely popular zone of open grassland and forest, close and convenient to Ramnagar town and long known for its good and frequent tiger sightings.
Jhirna and Dhela: the two zones that stay open all year round, including through the monsoon when the core zones close, making them very useful for an off-season or monsoon visit.
Durga Devi and the buffer zones: the quieter, more remote zones, especially good for birdlife, riverside scenery and a more peaceful, uncrowded safari away from the busier gates.
We help you choose and book the right zones for your dates and interests.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Jim Corbett is roughly November to June, while the main park zones are open. The cooler months, November to February, are pleasant and comfortable and wonderful for the birdlife, while the hotter months of March to June, though warm, often offer the best tiger sightings, as animals gather at the shrinking water.
An important point for planning: the core zones of the park, such as Dhikala and Bijrani, usually close during the monsoon, roughly July to September or into October, when heavy rain makes the tracks impassable, though some zones like Jhirna and Dhela stay open year-round. So trips are planned around the open season. Whatever the time, book your safaris well ahead, as permits are limited, as our best time to visit North India guide covers the wider region.
Combining Jim Corbett with your trip
Jim Corbett combines beautifully with the wider Kumaon region:
With Nainital: the beautiful emerald-lake hill station of Nainital is only about 65 km away, roughly two hours by road, making a wonderful and popular hill-and-wildlife pairing, as our Delhi to Nainital distance guide describes in full.
With the Kumaon hills: Corbett is a gateway to the wider Kumaon hills and lakes, reached via Haldwani, as our Delhi to Haldwani distance guide covers.
As a short trip: Corbett makes a great short wildlife escape from Delhi in its own right, as our best places for a 3-day trip from Delhi guide covers more short trips.
And for those wanting a tiger safari alongside the Golden Triangle in Rajasthan instead, our Golden Triangle with Ranthambore guide covers that reserve.
