Delhi to Leh in Ladakh is about 948 to 995 km by road and roughly 19 to 22 hours over two or more days, on the Manali or Srinagar highways, open only from about May to October. Flights take around 1 hour 15 minutes year-round. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans Ladakh trips.

Reaching Leh, the heart of Ladakh, is one of India's great Himalayan journeys, an epic road trip in summer or a quick flight over the mountains any time of year. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages covers the Delhi to Leh distance in both directions, the two road routes and when they open, flights, trains, permits and the altitude advice that keeps the trip safe.

I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years arranging North India trips for Experience My India I have planned many Ladakh journeys, most often as a high-altitude add-on beyond the classic plains circuit of a Golden Triangle tour. Here is the honest, practical version, including the parts other guides gloss over.

Where is Leh and Ladakh?

Leh is the main town and gateway of Ladakh, a high-altitude region in the far north of India, now a Union Territory. Sitting at about 3,500 metres among the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges, it is a land of stark cold deserts, turquoise lakes, ancient monasteries and some of the highest motorable roads on Earth.

Because of that altitude and terrain, getting there is part of the adventure and how you travel and when, shapes the whole trip.

How far is Delhi to Leh by road?

Delhi to Leh is about 954 to 995 km by road and takes roughly 19 to 22 hours of driving, which is spread across two or more days with overnight halts. The routes are below.

19 hr 31 min

Via NH44 and NH3

992 km

22 hr 7 min

Via NH344G and NH3

995 km

No one drives this in a single stretch. The journey is broken over several days, both to rest and, crucially, to let your body adjust to the altitude.

How far is Leh to Delhi by road?

Leh to Delhi is about 948 to 991 km, with similar routes in reverse.

Via NH3 and NH44

The descent is often done a little quicker, but it should still be spread over days, especially the high-pass sections.

What are the two road routes to Leh?

There are two classic highways into Ladakh and many travellers use one to go up and the other to come down:

  • The Srinagar-Leh Highway: via Sonamarg, Zoji La, Kargil and Lamayuru. It has a gentler, more gradual climb, which is much kinder for acclimatisation and it usually opens earlier in the season. This is the recommended way up for first-timers.

  • The Manali-Leh Highway: via the Atal Tunnel, Keylong and a series of very high passes like Baralacha La and Tanglang La. It is dramatic and beautiful but climbs high fast, so it is better used on the way down once you are acclimatised. Our Delhi to Manali distance guide covers the first leg as far as Manali.

The classic plan is to go up via Srinagar and return via Manali, giving you two completely different landscapes without repeating a road.

When do the Delhi to Leh roads open?

This is the single most important thing to plan around: the highways to Leh are seasonal and closed for much of the year. Snow shuts the high passes, so the roads open only once the Border Roads Organisation clears them.

  • Srinagar-Leh Highway: usually opens between late March and mid-April.

  • Manali-Leh Highway: usually opens around mid-May and can slip by a week or two after a heavy winter.

  • Closure: both highways are typically closed from around November to April or May.

Always check the latest road status before you travel, since opening dates shift each year and conditions can change quickly at altitude.

How do you reach Leh by flight?

Flying is by far the fastest way and unlike the roads, flights run all year. A direct flight from Delhi to Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport takes only about 1 hour 15 minutes.

  • Year-round access: flights operate even in winter when the roads are shut.

  • The catch: flying straight to 3,500 m gives your body no time to adjust, so a full rest day in Leh on arrival is essential before any activity.

  • Best for: those short on time or visiting outside the road season.

Is there a train from Delhi to Leh?

No, there is no direct train to Leh and the popular search for a Delhi to Leh train has the same answer it has had for years. The nearest railheads are Jammu Tawi and, via the newer Kashmir rail link, Banihal, both still a long road journey from Leh. Railway projects in the region are ongoing, but no completion date has been confirmed for a line reaching Leh.

The train-plus-road option suits budget travellers: take an overnight train to Jammu, then continue by shared taxi or bus toward Srinagar and Leh.

Can you take a bus from Delhi to Leh?

Yes, in season. The Himachal state transport corporation runs a long-distance bus from Delhi to Leh via the Manali-Leh Highway, a demanding journey of well over a day that operates only when the road is open, roughly June to September. It is cheap and adventurous, but the altitude and long hours make it hard going, so most travellers prefer a broken road trip or a flight.

Why does altitude matter so much in Ladakh?

Leh sits at about 3,500 m and much of Ladakh is higher still, so acute mountain sickness is a real risk that must be respected. This is not a place to rush.

  • Acclimatise first: take a full rest day in Leh on arrival, especially if you have flown in.

  • Ascend gradually: the Srinagar route's slower climb helps your body adjust.

  • Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol at first and do not overexert on the first day or two.

  • Know the signs: headache, nausea and breathlessness mean you should rest and, if they worsen, descend and seek help.

Anyone with heart or lung conditions should consult a doctor before travelling.

Do you need permits for Ladakh?

Yes, for several areas. While Leh town itself is freely accessible, an Inner Line Permit is required for many popular spots such as Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and the Khardung La pass. These are easy to arrange in Leh or online and a tour operator can handle them for you. Carry several photocopies, as they are checked at multiple points.

What can you see in Ladakh?

Ladakh rewards the effort of getting there with unforgettable sights:

  • Leh: the old town, palace and market and the base for exploring.

  • Pangong Tso: the mesmerising high-altitude lake that changes colour through the day.

  • Nubra Valley: with its cold-desert dunes and the Diskit monastery.

  • Khardung La: one of the world's highest motorable passes.

  • Monasteries: Thiksey, Hemis and Alchi, among the finest in the Himalayas.

When is the best time to visit Ladakh?

The best time to visit Ladakh is May to September, when the roads are open and the weather is at its kindest, with July and August the busiest. September to October is a quieter, beautiful window with clear autumn light, though the season is closing. Outside this, roads shut and only flights operate and winter is for hardy travellers only.

Travel tips for the Delhi to Leh journey

  • Check the road status before travelling, as the highways are seasonal.

  • Go up via Srinagar and down via Manali for gentler acclimatisation and two landscapes.

  • Take a rest day in Leh on arrival, especially if you fly in.

  • Carry Inner Line Permits and several copies for Nubra, Pangong and Khardung La.

  • Fill fuel wherever you can, as the Tandi to Leh stretch has almost none.

  • Carry cash, warm layers and basic medicines for the altitude.

“We booked our Ladakh trip with Experience My India after reading their Delhi to Leh travel guide. We were initially confused about whether to fly to Leh or take the road route, but the team explained the options clearly and helped us choose the itinerary that suited our time. The vehicle was comfortable, the driver was experienced with the mountain roads, and the overall coordination was smooth. The advice about keeping the first day in Leh relaxed was especially helpful. Everything from pickup to hotel coordination was handled properly.”

We chose to fly from Delhi and then followed a properly paced Ladakh itinerary. The team kept our first day easy for acclimatisation and planned places like Nubra Valley and Pangong without making the schedule unnecessarily hectic. Communication on WhatsApp was quick throughout the trip. The driver was polite and the car was clean and comfortable. We were very happy with the service.”
