What is the best route from Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan?

The best and fastest route from Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan is via the Yamuna Expressway, the smooth, modern expressway that runs south from Delhi towards Agra, at about 180 km and around 3 hours 26 minutes. The towns lie just off the expressway, so it is a quick, comfortable and straightforward drive.

The Yamuna Expressway is a fast, wide, well-maintained toll road, one of the very best in the whole region, making the journey down to Braj genuinely easy and pleasant. The older route via NH44 is a little shorter in distance but considerably slower and busier in practice. The main variable is city traffic at the Delhi end, so an early morning start helps you clear the capital quickly and enjoy a fast, smooth run down the expressway to the land of Krishna.

Ways to travel from Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan

Mathura and Vrindavan are very easy to reach from Delhi:

  • By car: the most flexible and comfortable option, a drive of around 3.5 hours on the fast Yamuna Expressway, letting you visit both towns and their temples at your own pace, as a day trip or overnight. This is what we usually arrange.

  • By train: Mathura has a major, well-connected railway junction, reached by fast trains from Delhi, from where Vrindavan is a short local ride, a good and restful option.

  • By bus: buses run from Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan, an economical option, though less flexible than a private car for visiting the temples.

For most travellers, a private car and driver is the easiest way, especially for a day trip visiting both towns' temples, while the train to Mathura is a good, quick alternative.

About Mathura and Vrindavan: the land of Krishna

Mathura and Vrindavan are the twin holy towns at the very heart of Braj, the sacred land of Lord Krishna, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the sacred Yamuna river. Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and Vrindavan, just a little upstream, is where he spent his childhood and both are filled with temples, ghats and joyful, colourful devotion.

For many millions of Hindus, Braj is among the very holiest and most beloved regions in all of India and Mathura and Vrindavan are its beating heart. The two towns brim with temples of every size, from grand and world-famous to tiny and hidden in the lanes, along with the sacred ghats on the Yamuna, the bustling, colourful bazaars and a deeply devotional, festive, joyful atmosphere that fills the streets. Close to Delhi and wonderfully easy to reach, they offer a rich, immersive and moving glimpse of living Hindu faith and devotion and a beautiful, complete contrast to the great Mughal monuments of the plains.

What to see in Mathura

Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, on the banks of the Yamuna, is a town of deep devotion:

  • Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi: the sacred temple complex marking the very birthplace of Lord Krishna, the holiest and most important site in Mathura and a major pilgrimage destination drawing devotees from across India.

  • Dwarkadhish Temple: one of Mathura's most important, popular and beautiful temples, dedicated to Krishna, known for its lively festivals, its colourful decorations and its ornate architecture.

  • The Yamuna ghats: the ghats along the sacred river, above all the atmospheric Vishram Ghat, where pilgrims bathe and the beautiful evening aarti is performed by flickering lamplight, are the true spiritual heart of the old town.

  • The old bazaars: Mathura's lively, winding lanes and markets, famous throughout India for their sweets, especially the rich local milk pedas, are a real delight to wander and taste your way through slowly.

What to see in Vrindavan

Vrindavan, only about 15 km from Mathura, where Krishna spent his childhood, is said to hold thousands of temples and is a joyful, intensely devotional town:

  • Banke Bihari Temple: the most beloved and famous temple in all of Vrindavan, dedicated to Krishna as Banke Bihari, always full of joyful, ecstatic, singing devotion, though very busy and crowded, so it is well worth checking its particular opening times before you go.

  • Prem Mandir: a stunning modern white-marble temple set in beautifully landscaped gardens with musical fountains, exquisitely carved with scenes from Krishna's life and spectacularly illuminated in slowly changing colours in the evenings, a genuine must-see and a real highlight.

  • ISKCON Temple: the Krishna Balaram Mandir, a major, welcoming and beautifully kept temple, well known for its devotional worship, its uplifting kirtan singing and its peaceful orderly and calm atmosphere.

  • The many other temples: from the historic Radha Raman and Govind Dev temples to the sacred, mysterious grove of Nidhivan and countless smaller shrines in the lanes, Vrindavan is a town devoted entirely, in every corner, to Radha and Krishna.

A day allows you to see the highlights of both Mathura and Vrindavan, though the devotees may wish to stay longer.

The wider Braj region and Holi

Beyond Mathura and Vrindavan, the wider Braj region holds much more of Krishna's story for those with time: Gokul, where the infant Krishna was raised; Govardhan, the sacred hill he is said to have lifted; and Barsana and Nandgaon, the villages of Radha and Krishna.

Braj is also famous, above all else, for its Holi, the most celebrated, colourful and spectacular Holi in all of India, with roots reaching back to Krishna himself. The Braj Holi season, around March, unfolds over many days and includes the unique and playful Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon, where women playfully drive off the men with sticks, the beautiful flower Holi or Phoolon Wali Holi, at the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan and days of colour, music, dance and devotion across the whole region. For very many travellers and pilgrims, timing a visit to coincide with the Braj Holi is a true bucket-list experience, quite unlike Holi celebrated anywhere else in the world, though it is also by far the busiest and most crowded time, so it needs careful planning and booking well in advance.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Mathura and Vrindavan is October to March, when the weather is cool and pleasant for the temples and the towns, as our best time to visit North India guide explains for the wider region.

Two special times stand out for Braj: Holi, around March, the most famous in India and Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, usually in August or September, when Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate joyously. Both are spectacular but extremely crowded, so plan and book well ahead. Summers, from April to June, are hot and the monsoon brings rain, so for a comfortable visit, the cool season is best.

A day trip or an overnight?

Because Mathura and Vrindavan are so close to Delhi, only about 3.5 hours away on the fast Yamuna Expressway, they make an ideal and hugely popular day trip: leave early in the morning, spend the day visiting the main temples of both towns and the riverside ghats and return comfortably to Delhi in the evening. This is a very manageable and rewarding way to see the highlights of Braj in a single day.

For those who want more or who are especially drawn to Braj and Krishna, an overnight stay lets you enjoy a far more relaxed, unhurried pace, see many more of the temples and the wider Braj region such as Gokul and Govardhan and experience the beautiful evening aarti and the atmospheric towns after dark, when the daytime pilgrim crowds have thinned. Both approaches work beautifully and we tailor the trip entirely to your interests and the time you have.

Tips for planning the trip

  • Take the fast Yamuna Expressway for the quickest, smoothest drive of about 3.5 hours.

  • Start early to make the most of a day trip and to clear Delhi's city traffic.

  • Check the Banke Bihari and other temple timings, as they vary and close midday.

  • Dress modestly and respectfully and be prepared to remove footwear at temples.

  • Visit October to March or time it for Holi or Janmashtami for the great festivals.

  • Keep valuables safe and go with a guide in the busy temple crowds.
