Famous Street Food Places in Delhi

Quick Answer

Quick Read 3+ Reviews

Delhi's most famous street food is in Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk, from Paranthe Wali Gali to Karim's kebabs and Old Famous Jalebi Wala, with more across Connaught Place, Moolchand, Amar Colony, Lajpat Nagar, CR Park and Kamla Nagar.

Delhi is one of India's great street food cities, and its famous places cluster in a handful of hubs. Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk is the undisputed heart, packed with Mughlai kebabs, stuffed parathas and century-old sweet shops. Beyond it, Connaught Place and the lanes around the UPSC building do brilliant chaat, Moolchand is a late-night paratha institution, Amar Colony and Lajpat Nagar mix shopping with momos and tikki, and neighbourhoods like CR Park and Kamla Nagar have their own beloved specialities. This guide walks through the best of them, area by area, with what to order at each.

I was born in Delhi, and in 11 years showing visitors around the city for Experience My India I have eaten my way through every one of these lanes. Street food is where Delhi really opens up, and knowing which stall does what, and when to go, is half the pleasure. Here is my area-by-area rundown of the places worth your appetite.

Old Delhi and Chandni Chowk

If you visit only one area, make it Chandni Chowk. Its narrow lanes hold the city's oldest and most legendary food, and a single afternoon here can take you from savoury to sweet and back again.

  • Paranthe Wali Gali. A whole lane devoted to deep-fried stuffed flatbreads, served the traditional way with sweet pumpkin, mint chutney and mixed pickles. The fillings run from potato and paneer to more unusual choices, and this is the place to try the dish at its source.

  • Karim's and Al Jawahar. The two Mughlai institutions are beside Jama Masjid, renowned for their non-vegetarian cooking. Come for seekh kebabs, mutton nihari and rich korma, and finish with shahi tukda. Karim's has served this food since 1913 and remains a rite of passage in Old Delhi.

  • Old Famous Jalebi Wala. A sweet shop near Dariba Kalan frying thick, saffron-tinged jalebis in desi ghee since 1884, best eaten hot with a helping of rabri. Go in the morning when they are freshest.

  • Natraj Dahi Bhalla. Famous for exceptionally soft lentil dumplings drenched in cold, thick yogurt and tangy tamarind chutney, with a plate of crisp aloo tikki alongside. Many Delhiites rate these the best dahi bhalla in the city.

  • Kuremal Mohanlal Kulfi. Tucked into Kucha Pati Ram in Chawri Bazaar, this century-old shop makes stuffed kulfi, whole fruits hollowed out and filled with kulfi, in flavours from mango to paan and pomegranate. It is the sweetest way to end an Old Delhi crawl.

  • Winter and hidden gems. In the cold months, seek out Daulat ki Chaat, a delicate milk-foam dessert sold on the streets at dawn that vanishes by mid-morning and appears only from about November to February. For more, Giani's di Hatti does a famous rabri falooda, Bishan Swaroop is loved for its aloo chaat, and Jung Bahadur Kachori Wala for spicy kachori.

Central and South Delhi

  • Connaught Place and the UPSC lanes. The colonial heart of New Delhi and the streets around the UPSC building are go-to spots for spicy papdi chaat, golgappe and aloo tikki, easy to combine with an afternoon of shopping in the circle.

  • Moolchand Parathewala. A legendary late-night stop right under the Moolchand flyover, serving heavy, butter-laden stuffed parathas well into the small hours. It is the classic Delhi post-midnight refuel.

  • Amar Colony Market. Celebrated for its range, from stellar chole bhature to the Afghan-style tandoori momos at Hunger Strike that have a citywide following. A great stop for adventurous eaters.

  • Lajpat Nagar Central Market. The ultimate pitstop for street-side momos, bhel puri and crisp potato tikki while you shop. The energy of the market is half the experience.

Neighbourhood specialities

  • Chittaranjan Park (CR Park). Delhi's Bengali quarter and the hub for Bengali street treats, from egg rolls and chop cutlets to kachoris and fish fry. The lanes near the markets are the place to graze.

  • Kamla Nagar. The student favourite in North Delhi, home to Chache Di Hatti for legendary chole bhature and Momo's Point for an endless variety of creative momos. Lively, cheap and delicious.

What to eat: Delhi's signature street foods

Beyond the addresses, a few dishes define Delhi's streets. Golgappe, the crisp hollow spheres filled with spiced water, are the city's favourite snack, alongside aloo tikki, dahi bhalla and papdi chaat. Chole bhature, a plate of spiced chickpeas with a puffed fried bread, is the heavyweight breakfast, while stuffed parathas belong to Chandni Chowk and Moolchand. On the Mughlai side, seekh kebabs, mutton nihari and korma rule near Jama Masjid. Momos, both steamed and tandoori, are everywhere now. For dessert, chase hot jalebi with rabri, stuffed kulfi, rabri falooda and, in winter, the airy Daulat ki Chaat.

Tips for eating street food in Delhi

A few habits keep it safe and enjoyable. Choose busy stalls where the turnover is high and the food is cooked fresh in front of you, since a queue is usually a good sign. Evenings are the liveliest time, with the widest choice, though the famous Old Delhi sweet shops are best in the morning. Drink bottled or filtered water, carry small cash as most stalls do not take cards, wear comfortable shoes for the lanes, and pace yourself so you can try more. If you would rather have someone navigate the lanes and pick the best stalls, a guided food walk is well worth it.

Fit a food trail into your Delhi trip

Street food pairs naturally with sightseeing and shopping. A Chandni Chowk food walk sits beside the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, so it slots into a wider day; see our places to visit in Delhi guide for the sights nearby. The market stops like Lajpat Nagar and Amar Colony double as shopping, covered in our shopping in Delhi guide, and the upscale Sunder Nagar Market nearby is worth a look for its tea houses and Nathu's Sweets. To get around, our Delhi Agra Mathura map shows how the city connects, and our where to stay in Delhi guide helps you base yourself close to the action.

โ€œWe booked a Delhi food and sightseeing day with Experience My India, and it turned out to be one of the best parts of our trip. We specifically wanted to try the famous street food in Chandni Chowk, especially parathas, jalebi and dahi bhalla. Abhay Sharma Ji planned the route perfectly and made sure we had enough time to enjoy the food without rushing. The driver was punctual, the car was clean, and the entire day was very well managed. We were extremely happy with the service.โ€

โ€œOur Delhi food experience with Experience My India was fantastic. We wanted to explore local street food rather than just visit regular tourist attractions, and Abhay Sharma Ji understood exactly what we were looking for. He helped us cover Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid and some of the famous food spots around Old Delhi. The driver was on time and the sightseeing was comfortable. Everything was organized very smoothly, and we felt well looked after throughout the day.โ€
