Golden Triangle Tour Itinerary: The Perfect 4 Days

I was born in Delhi, and for 11 years I have run this exact loop for Experience My India, hundreds of times over. The Golden Triangle, Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, is the best first trip to India. There is, three cities close enough to link by road that between them hold the Mughal capital, the Taj Mahal and a Rajput desert kingdom. The mistake most itineraries make is cramming or crisscrossing. This one flows in a clean loop, city by city, and I have built in the two things that quietly ruin trips if you ignore them: the days the Taj and Delhi's monuments close. Here is the plan, then how to shorten or stretch it.

The classic 4-day Golden Triangle itinerary

Four days and three nights is the sweet spot: enough to see the headline sights of each city without rushing, and a clean one-way loop that never doubles back. Here it is at a glance, then day by day.

Day 1: Delhi

Spend your first day in the capital, split between its two halves. Take the morning in Old Delhi, the Mughal city: the Red Fort, the great Jama Masjid, and a cycle-rickshaw through the lanes and street food of Chandni Chowk. In the afternoon move to New Delhi for India Gate and the ceremonial avenue, the towering Qutub Minar and the serene Humayun's Tomb, the tomb that rehearsed the Taj. If you have energy, add the Lotus Temple or Akshardham. Day 2: Delhi to Agra

Leave Delhi early and drive down the Yamuna Expressway to Agra, about 230 km in roughly four hours; our Delhi to Agra distance guide covers every route and the toll. Reach Agra by late morning and go straight to the Taj Mahal, then the mighty red sandstone Agra Fort where Shah Jahan was later imprisoned within sight of the Taj he built. One thing that catches people out every week: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so make sure day two does not land on one, and check the Taj Mahal's timings and ticket prices before you go. Day 3: Agra to Jaipur

This is the most rewarding travel day. Start early, with an optional Taj sunrise or a quiet hour at the Baby Taj, then drive west towards Jaipur, about 240 km with two brilliant stops on the way. First is Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's perfectly preserved abandoned capital, about 40 km from Agra; then, further along the highway, the astonishing Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri, 3,500 steps plunging thirteen storeys down. You reach Jaipur in the evening, in time to settle in and eat well.

Day 4: Jaipur to Delhi

Give the morning to the Pink City. Climb to the hilltop Amber Fort at opening, before the crowds and the heat, then take in the City Palace, the honeycomb Hawa Mahal and the giant stone instruments of Jantar Mantar. In the afternoon drive back to Delhi, about 270 km in five to six hours, closing the triangle where it began.

How many days do you need for the Golden Triangle?

Four days is the honest sweet spot, but the loop flexes well in both directions.

Three days, if time is tight

You can compress it: Delhi in the morning and drive to Agra by evening on day one, the Taj and Agra Fort then straight on to Jaipur on day two, and Jaipur before driving back to Delhi on day three. It works, but every day is long and there is no slack, so it suits energetic travellers more than families.

Five to six days, to slow down

With a couple more days you can breathe: a second night in Delhi or Agra, a proper morning at Fatehpur Sikri, a Taj sunrise without a pre-dawn scramble, and time to shop and eat in Jaipur. Five or six days also lets you add a side trip, most popularly a night at Ranthambore for a tiger safari on the way to or from Jaipur, or Pushkar and its lake. Stretch to seven and you can carry on into Rajasthan, to Udaipur or the desert at Jaisalmer, though that is a bigger trip than the triangle itself.

The route and distances

The Golden Triangle is a genuine triangle of roughly equal legs, which is what makes it so neat. Delhi to Agra is about 230 km and four hours on the Yamuna Expressway; Agra to Jaipur is about 240 km and five to six hours with the Fatehpur Sikri and Chand Baori stops; and Jaipur back to Delhi is about 270 km and five to six hours on the highway. The whole loop is around 750 km. Always drive it as a one-way circuit rather than back and forth, and leave early each morning, because the single biggest time-waster on the whole trip is city traffic, not the open road.

Best time to do the Golden Triangle

Come between October and March, when the weather across all three cities is cool and clear and kind for sightseeing. April to June is punishingly hot, especially for climbing forts, and the monsoon from July to September brings some rain and thinner crowds. Winter also brings the great festivals, Diwali in autumn, and events like the Jaipur Literature Festival in January. Whenever you come, remember the two golden rules of timing this trip: never put Agra on a Friday, when the Taj is closed, and never rely on a Monday in Delhi, when the Red Fort and the big temples close.

How to travel, and roughly what it costs

The overwhelmingly best way to do the Golden Triangle is a private car with a driver. The cities are linked by good highways but the distances are real, and a car goes door to door, waits while you sightsee, and lets you make the Fatehpur Sikri and Chand Baori stops that trains cannot. Trains are an option on individual legs, the fast Gatimaan Express from Delhi to Agra, for instance, but stitching the whole loop together by rail is fiddly. Costs depend almost entirely on your choice of hotels, from clean budget rooms to heritage palaces, and on whether you travel privately or in a group, so rather than quote a figure that would be out of date tomorrow, tell us your dates and standard and we will price it honestly.

What to know before you go

A few things save every Golden Triangle trip. Plan Agra for any day but Friday, and keep Delhi's big monuments off your Monday. Hire only licensed, ID-carrying guides, because the touts around the Taj, Fatehpur Sikri and Amber are relentless.
