How far is Delhi from Agra?
Delhi to Agra is roughly 230 km by road and the drive takes about 4 to 5.5 hours depending on the route and the Delhi traffic you hit leaving the city. The quickest option is the Yamuna Expressway at around 232 km and just over 4 hours door to door. Going the other way, Agra to Delhi is about 240 km and a very similar 4 to 5.5 hours. By fast train the journey is far shorter, under two hours, but you are tied to a fixed timetable.
Delhi to Agra and Agra to Delhi by road: every route compared
There are three sensible road routes and for almost everyone the Yamuna Expressway is the right one. Here is each direction with its distance and typical drive time.
Delhi to Agra
Route | Distance | Drive time |
Yamuna Expressway (fastest) | 232 km | 4 hr 18 min |
Noida-Greater Noida Expy + Yamuna Expy | 234 km | 5 hr 4 min |
Chennai-Delhi Highway (old route) | 228 km | 5 hr 32 min |
Agra to Delhi
Route | Distance | Drive time |
Yamuna Expressway (fastest) | 240 km | 4 hr 14 min |
Yamuna Expy + Noida-Greater Noida Expy | 239 km | 4 hr 26 min |
NH 44 | 245 km | 5 hr 40 min |
Which route to choose
Take the Yamuna Expressway. This 165 km six-lane toll road, sometimes called the Taj Expressway, is smooth, fast and has just one main toll plaza, which is why it is the fastest route each way despite not being the shortest on paper. The Noida and Greater Noida combination is essentially the same expressway reached through Noida, useful if you are starting from that side of the city. The old Chennai-Delhi highway route, the pre-expressway road, is only worth it if you specifically want to stop in towns along the way, since it adds well over an hour. Whichever way you go, the single biggest variable is how long it takes to clear Delhi's city traffic, which is why leaving early matters more than the route itself.
How to travel from Delhi to Agra
By car or taxi
A private car on the Yamuna Expressway is the most comfortable and flexible way to do it, door to door in about 4 hours with the freedom to stop and to add Mathura or a stepwell on the way. This is how every Experience My India departure runs, with an early start to beat the city crawl. A round-trip sedan with a driver typically costs a few thousand rupees including fuel and toll and it is the option I put almost every first-time traveller in.
By train
The Gatimaan Express is the fastest train, covering Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt in about 1 hour 40 minutes, departing 08:10 and arriving 09:50, six days a week except Friday, with the return leaving Agra in the evening. The Bhopal Shatabdi is a good earlier alternative, reaching Agra by around 08:00 and newer Vande Bharat services also stop at Agra, though their timings suit overnight visits more than day trips. Trains are quick and cheap, but they drop you at the station, so you still need transport around Agra.
By air
Flying is not worth it for this hop. Agra's small airport has only limited, irregular flights and once you add airport time you save nothing over the train or a car. Skip it.
By bus
Air-conditioned and Volvo buses run from Delhi to Agra in roughly 4 to 5 hours and are the cheapest option, though less comfortable and less flexible than a car. Good if you are travelling on a tight budget and do not mind a fixed departure.
Yamuna Expressway toll and driving notes
For a car, the Yamuna Expressway toll is roughly ₹400 to ₹500 one way in 2026, collected mainly at the Jewar toll plaza, with a round trip completed within 24 hours costing about 1.6 times the one-way rate. FASTag is mandatory, so make sure yours is loaded before you set off or you will pay double and queue longer. The road is well maintained with a 100 km/h car limit, but it is genuinely fast and open, so keep to the lanes, watch for slower trucks and do not drive it tired late at night.
Best time to leave
Leave Delhi by 6:00 to 6:30 in the morning. That clears the city before rush hour and puts you in Agra with the whole day ahead. On the way back, Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons are the slowest, as everyone returns to Delhi at once, so aim to start back before mid-afternoon if you can.
