10 Best Places to Visit in Agra: A Local Guide

I was born in Delhi and I have spent 11 years guiding travelers down to Agra and around it, more than 50,000 of them by now. Agra is a small city with an enormous history, and the honest truth is that most "places to visit" lists pad the count with water parks and gift-shop art galleries to reach a round number. This is the shorter, honest version I actually use: the places worth your time, grouped by where they sit, so you are not crossing the city twice.

The essential Mughal sites

1. Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is the reason you are coming, and it earns it. Emperor Shah Jahan built it for his wife Mumtaz Mahal between 1632 and 1653, and it is still the finest thing in the country to stand in front of at first light. It opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and it is closed every Friday. Entry is ₹50 for Indians, ₹540 for SAARC and BIMSTEC visitors and ₹1,100 for foreign tourists, with a ₹200 add-on to step inside the main mausoleum; children under 15 are free.

2. Agra Fort

Agra Fort is the one people underrate and then love. This vast red sandstone fort was the seat of the Mughal empire, begun by Akbar from 1565, and it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It sits about 2.5 km from the Taj, roughly ten minutes by car, and from its river-facing balconies you get a quiet, framed view of the Taj across the Yamuna. Entry is around ₹50 for Indians and ₹650 for foreign tourists, with the Amar Singh Gate as the main entrance.

Abhay's tip: Pair it with the Taj on the same morning. It is far less crowded, and the walk through the palaces and audience halls tells you the story the Taj alone does not.

3. Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is Akbar's abandoned capital, a complete red sandstone city he built from 1571 and left after only about 15 years. It is a UNESCO site about 36 to 40 km west of Agra, so it needs a half day of its own. Inside you get the towering Buland Darwaza gateway, the Panch Mahal, Jodha Bai's palace and the marble tomb of the saint Salim Chishti. It is open daily from about 6 am to 6 pm, and unlike the Taj it stays open on Fridays. Entry is around ₹50 for Indians and ₹610 for foreign tourists.

Abhay's tip: Do this on a second day, or as a morning stop if you are driving on to Jaipur. Trying to squeeze it into a single Taj day is what turns a good trip into a rushed one.

The riverbank tombs and gardens

4. Itmad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj

The Baby Taj is the sketch that came before the masterpiece. Nur Jahan built this riverside marble tomb for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg between 1622 and 1628, and it was the first Mughal tomb built entirely in marble, covered in the fine inlay work that the Taj would later perfect. It sits about 7 km from the Taj and takes under an hour to enjoy. It is open from dawn to dusk, and the fee is modest, roughly ₹30 for Indians and ₹310 for foreign tourists in 2026.

Abhay's tip: If you like getting close to the stone, the carved marble screens here are more detailed and far less crowded than at the Taj. This is my quiet favourite.

5. Mehtab Bagh

Mehtab Bagh is where you watch the Taj change colour at the end of the day. This garden sits directly across the Yamuna, perfectly aligned with the Taj's central axis, which makes it the best place to see the whole monument with space around it and almost no crowd. It is open from sunrise to sunset and the fee is small, around ₹25 for Indians and ₹300 for foreign tourists. Late afternoon is the moment.

Abhay's tip: Come here for sunset on the day you saw the Taj up close, then pair it with a sunrise visit the next morning. Same monument, two completely different feelings, and the light does all the work.

6. Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra

Akbar's Tomb is grand, green and gloriously quiet. Akbar began his own mausoleum during his lifetime, and it sits in a large deer-dotted garden at Sikandra, about 10 km north of Agra on the Delhi road. The gateway inlay and the tiered red sandstone and marble structure are worth the short detour, and the tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani is close by. Fees are modest, roughly ₹30 for Indians and ₹310 for foreign tourists.

Abhay's tip: Because it is on the Delhi road, it is the perfect first or last stop of a day trip. Fold it in on the way in or out rather than making a separate journey.

In the old city

7. Jama Masjid

Agra's Jama Masjid is a working Mughal mosque right beside Agra Fort, built under Shah Jahan and dedicated to his daughter Jahanara. It is free to enter, takes about half an hour, and drops you straight into the noise and colour of the old city. Dress modestly and mind prayer times.

Abhay's tip: Step out of the mosque and you are already inside Kinari Bazaar. Do the two together.

8. Chini Ka Rauza

Chini Ka Rauza is a small riverbank tomb famous for its glazed tilework, the only monument in Agra decorated this way. It is off most tourists' radar, free, and takes twenty minutes. It suits travelers who want a quiet, offbeat corner between the bigger riverbank sights.

Abhay's tip: Combine it with the Baby Taj, which is a short hop along the same bank.

9. Kinari Bazaar

Kinari Bazaar is the old city's beating market, a tangle of narrow lanes near Jama Masjid selling textiles, bridal wear, marble inlay work and Agra's famous leather. It is free to wander and rewards an hour of getting a little lost. Bargain, and keep your bag in front of you in the crush.

Abhay's tip: This is where to buy the marble inlay coasters and boxes, not the pricey stalls near the Taj gates.

10. Sadar Bazaar and Agra's petha

End with the thing Agra actually tastes like. Sadar Bazaar in the cantonment is the place to eat, and Agra's signature sweet is petha, a soft translucent candy made from ash gourd; Panchhi Petha is the name locals point you to. It is free to browse and a good, relaxed close to a monument-heavy day.

Abhay's tip: Buy petha from an established shop, not a station stall. The kesar and paan flavours travel better than people expect.

How many days do you need in Agra?

Two days is the honest sweet spot, which is exactly why our two-day Agra overnight tour exists. One full day covers the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort comfortably, with Mehtab Bagh at sunset. A second day gives you Fatehpur Sikri without watching the clock, plus the Baby Taj and Akbar's Tomb. You can still see the two headline sights as a single day trip from Delhi, but it is a long 12 to 14 hour day, and a real dawn view of the Taj only works if you stay overnight in Agra the night before. Within three days you can extend into the full Golden Triangle and add Jaipur.

The one ticket tip that saves foreign visitors money

Foreign monument tickets in Agra include a shared development toll that you only pay once per day across the main ASI sites, the Taj, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's Tomb and the Baby Taj. Keep your first ticket, and on the same day you are not charged that portion again at the others. On Fridays the toll is waived entirely, though remember the Taj itself is closed that day. Rules do shift, so confirm the exact split at the first counter.

What I tell friends before they go

If you take one thing from me, take this: do not try to see everything. The travelers who love Agra are the ones who saw three or four places properly, early, and left space to sit with a chair afterwards. The ones who leave the flat are the ones who chased ten sights in one hot afternoon. Start at sunrise, group your places by riverbank, and let the smaller tombs surprise you.
