About Hauz Khas Fort

Hauz Khas Fort is a medieval complex in South Delhi that offers a wonderful and quite unusual experience: ancient Islamic architecture and a tranquil historic lake, set right next to one of the city's most fashionable neighbourhoods. The complex dates back to the 14th century and its weathered domes, arches and pavilions, arranged along the edge of a large royal reservoir, make it one of the most romantic and photogenic heritage sites in the capital.

What makes Hauz Khas so special is this meeting of past and present. On one side lies the peaceful, green world of the old reservoir and the medieval monuments around it; on the other, just steps away, is the buzzing Hauz Khas Village, full of cafes, boutiques and galleries. A visit lets you wander centuries-old ruins, enjoy lovely views over the water and then step straight into the city's modern life, which is a large part of the area's enduring appeal.

The history of Hauz Khas Fort

The history of the site begins with water. In the 13th century, a great royal reservoir, known as the Hauz-i-Alai, was excavated here by Sultan Alauddin Khilji of the Khalji dynasty, to supply water to his nearby capital of Siri, the second of the historic cities of Delhi. The name Hauz Khas itself means the royal tank, a reference to this reservoir, which was the reason the whole complex came to be.

The great building, however, came in the 14th century. Around 1352, Firoz Shah Tughlaq, the ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty, restored the reservoir, which had silted up and built a grand complex along its banks. He constructed a large and important Islamic seminary or madrasa, one of the leading centres of learning of its day, along with a mosque, elegant domed pavilions known as chhatris and his own mausoleum, placed to overlook the water. These are the monuments that survive today, giving the site its distinctive character. Much later, in the late 20th century, the medieval ruins and the surrounding area were transformed into the bohemian Hauz Khas Village, a hub of designer boutiques, cafes and art galleries, which brought a new lease of life and a modern buzz to this ancient place.

What to see at Hauz Khas Fort

Hauz Khas Fort is a complex of several connected monuments, all set along the edge of the historic reservoir and exploring them is a delight. Here are the highlights.

Tomb of Firoz Shah Tughlaq

The mausoleum of the ruler who built the complex, overlooking the water

Mosque and pavilions

The reservoir and lake

The madrasa

The great madrasa, the Islamic seminary built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, is the heart of the complex. In its day it was one of the foremost centres of learning in the region and its long ranges of rooms, arches and domed pavilions, stepping down towards the water, are beautiful to wander. Walking through the old seminary, imagining the scholars who once studied here, is one of the great pleasures of a visit.

The tomb of Firoz Shah Tughlaq

Within the complex stands the mausoleum of Firoz Shah Tughlaq himself, the ruler who built the madrasa and restored the reservoir. The tomb, placed to overlook the water, is a solemn and historic structure, the resting place of one of the important rulers of medieval Delhi and a central feature of the site.

The mosque and pavilions

The complex also includes a mosque and a number of elegant domed pavilions, the chhatris, scattered around the grounds. These add to the beauty and atmosphere of the place and many offer lovely vantage points over the lake and the monuments. They are a delight for photographers and for anyone who loves old architecture.

The reservoir and lake views

Perhaps the greatest charm of Hauz Khas Fort is its setting beside the historic reservoir. The large tank, once the royal water supply, today forms a serene lake that the monuments overlook and the views across the water, especially in the soft light of late afternoon, are among the loveliest in Delhi. The lake and the greenery around it make the whole complex a peaceful retreat in the heart of the busy city.

Hauz Khas Village and the modern neighbourhood

Right beside the historic fort lies Hauz Khas Village, the lively, bohemian neighbourhood that grew up around the medieval ruins in the late 20th century. Today it is one of the most fashionable areas in Delhi, famous for its designer boutiques, stylish cafes and restaurants, art galleries and vibrant nightlife, making it a favourite with young Delhiites and visitors alike.

This unusual pairing, where you can explore centuries-old monuments and then step into a trendy cafe or browse a boutique just outside, is a big part of the area's appeal. It makes Hauz Khas a wonderful place to spend a half-day or an evening, combining heritage with the city's modern life and a popular spot for a relaxed outing, as our places to go in Delhi with friends guide covers the capital's social spots and our hidden places to visit in Delhi guide covers its atmospheric corners. The green Deer Park and the lake nearby add further to the appeal of the whole area.

Hauz Khas Fort timings

Hauz Khas Fort is open to visitors every day of the week, Monday to Sunday, from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM. This makes it easy to fit into a day in Delhi and the later closing time in particular means you can enjoy the complex and the lake in the beautiful light of the late afternoon and early evening, which is when the site is at its most atmospheric.

As the complex and its surroundings are a popular spot, especially in the evenings and at weekends when the adjoining village is busy, visiting earlier in the day can mean a quieter, more peaceful experience among the monuments, while the late afternoon offers the loveliest light over the water.
