Why is Holi in Mathura and Vrindavan so famous?
Holi is celebrated joyously all across India, but nowhere is it as famous, as long, as devotional or as spectacular as in Braj, the sacred land of Krishna, around Mathura and Vrindavan. This is the very land where, according to the beloved and ancient legends, Lord Krishna himself played Holi with Radha and the gopis and so the festival here is celebrated with a depth of tradition, meaning, devotion and sheer joyful exuberance found quite literally nowhere else on earth.
Rather than a single day of colour, Holi in Braj unfolds grandly over more than a week, from around 15 to 23 March in 2027, with a different, famous and distinctive celebration in a different sacred town almost every single day, from the sweet Laddu Holi and the stick-wielding Lathmar Holi to the gentle flower Holi and the wild Huranga. Each has its own tradition, its own town and its own particular magic. For travellers and devotees alike, experiencing this great festival in its true spiritual home, among the temples and lanes where the stories are set, is genuinely one of the most magical, moving and unforgettable experiences in all of India.
The full Holi 2027 schedule in Braj
Here is the full schedule of the main Holi 2027 celebrations across Braj, each one with its own distinct character, tradition and town, unfolding day by day over the week. Remember that the dates all follow the traditional Hindu lunar calendar and so can shift from year to year and vary slightly by temple, so it is always wise to reconfirm them nearer the time of your trip.
Laddu Holi, Barsana: Monday, 15 March 2027
The sweet, joyful opening of the whole Braj Holi season, held at the Radha Rani or Shriji, temple in Barsana, where the priests and devotees joyfully shower sweet laddus over the gathered crowds, marking the happy acceptance of the Holi invitation sent from Nandgaon. Our Laddu Holi 2027 in Barsana guide covers it in full.
Lathmar Holi, Barsana: Wednesday, 17 March 2027
The world-famous main event of the season, at Barsana, where the spirited women of Barsana playfully drive off the visiting men of Nandgaon with sticks or lathis, while the men defend themselves with shields, all amid heavy colour, folk song and high energy. Our Lathmar Holi 2027 in Barsana guide covers it in full.
Lathmar Holi, Nandgaon: Thursday, 18 March 2027
The colourful return event in Lord Krishna's own town of Nandgaon, running from the afternoon through into the evening, where the roles are joyfully reversed, as the men of Barsana now visit Nandgaon and the spirited women of Nandgaon drive them off in turn with their lathis. Our Lathmar Holi 2027 in Nandgaon guide covers it in full.
Chhadi Mar Holi, Gokul: Friday, 19 March 2027
Gokul, the town where the infant Krishna was lovingly raised, celebrates its own gentler and distinctive Chhadi Mar Holi, played with soft sticks or chhadis, rather than the heavier lathis, in tender honour of the child Krishna, at the Murlidhar Ghat and the ancient temples of Gokul. Our Chhadi Mar Holi 2027 in Gokul guide covers it in full.
Phoolon Wali Holi, Vrindavan: Saturday, 20 March 2027
The beautiful, gentle and much-loved flower Holi at the famous Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan, when the priests shower the gathered devotees with heaps of fragrant fresh flowers instead of coloured powder, a truly lovely and uplifting sight quite unlike the other celebrations. Our Phoolon Wali Holi 2027 in Vrindavan guide covers it in full.
Holi and Holika Dahan, Mathura: Sunday, 21 March 2027
In Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the main celebrations centre on the historic Dwarkadhish temple, with its colourful processions and festivities and the evening of the same day sees Holika Dahan, the lighting of the great ceremonial bonfires across the region, marking the triumph of good over evil. Our Holi 2027 in Mathura guide covers it in full.
Holi colour, Dhulendi: Monday, 22 March 2027
The main day of colour Holi, Dhulendi, is celebrated with huge joy across Mathura and all of Braj, when everyone, young and old, takes to the streets and lanes to play freely with coloured powder, water and song, the great, exuberant and much-anticipated climax of the whole festival and the day most people picture when they think of Holi.
Dauji Huranga, Dauji: Tuesday, 23 March 2027
The great Braj Holi season closes with the wild, energetic and world-famous Huranga at the historic Dauji temple in the town of Dauji, a unique, spirited and joyful celebration held the day after the main colour Holi, a fitting and exuberant finale. Our Dauji Huranga 2027 guide covers it in full.
How to plan the Holi week from Delhi
With so many different celebrations spread across more than a week and several towns, a little careful planning ahead really helps you make the most of your Braj Holi trip:
Decide how long to stay: you can come for just a single famous event, such as the celebrated Lathmar Holi at Barsana, in a short trip or stay on for several days or even the whole week, to experience the full sequence from Laddu Holi right through to the Dauji Huranga.
Base yourself in Braj: stay right in Mathura or Vrindavan, the two main towns of the region, which are central and convenient for reaching all the surrounding celebrations, rather than tiring yourself travelling back and forth from Delhi each and every day.
Book months in advance: accommodation right across Braj fills up many months ahead for the Holi season, which is by far the busiest time of year here, so reserve your stay as early as you possibly can.
Plan around the dates: pick out the particular celebrations you most want to see and carefully plan your days around their timings, allowing for the heavy crowds and the travel between the different towns.
Let us handle it all: with the huge crowds, the many timings, the travel between towns and the scarce rooms, a well-organised trip makes the whole Holi week far smoother, safer and more enjoyable.
Our Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan guide also shows how a Braj visit fits beautifully into a wider trip around the region, for those combining the Holi with the Taj Mahal and the rest of the Golden Triangle.
How to reach Mathura and Vrindavan from Delhi
Mathura and Vrindavan, the heart of Braj, lie conveniently close to Delhi, about 180 km and around 3.5 hours by road on the fast Yamuna Expressway, with the surrounding Holi towns of Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul and Dauji all within easy reach around them. During the Holi season, though, the roads are extremely busy and often jammed, so allow plenty of extra time and set out early each day.
Most travellers either drive or take a train from Delhi to Mathura, base themselves there or in nearby Vrindavan and then travel out to the various Holi celebrations in the surrounding towns on their respective days, as our Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan distance guide covers that route from Delhi in full. Our things to do in Delhi guide covers the capital itself, where many Braj Holi trips begin and end.
Tips for Holi 2027 in Braj
Book your Mathura or Vrindavan stay many months in advance, as the rooms sell out very early.
Start very early each day to reach the celebrations in good time and beat the biggest crowds.
Wear old clothes you do not mind completely ruining and protect your eyes, phone and camera.
Be prepared for massive crowds, tight security, heavy colour and high energy throughout the week.
Reconfirm the exact dates nearer the time, as they follow the Hindu lunar calendar and can shift.

Consider a guide or an arranged trip to manage the travel between towns, timings and crowds smoothly.

What to expect
Holi in Braj is an overwhelming, joyful and utterly unforgettable experience, quite unlike anywhere else in the world. For more than a week on end, the towns of the region fill to bursting with vast, exuberant crowds, clouds of vibrant colour, music, song, drumming and heartfelt devotion, each day bringing a different famous celebration in a different sacred town, from the sweets and sticks of the early days to the flowers and the great bonfires that follow. It is loud, crowded, colourful, chaotic and intensely spiritual all at once, a complete and joyful immersion in the living faith and festive spirit of the land of Krishna.
It is certainly not a quiet, gentle or orderly experience, so it is best to come well prepared for the crowds, the heavy colour and the sheer energy of it all and simply to give yourself over completely to the magic of the occasion. For those who love festivals, colour and ancient living tradition and who plan their trip carefully and well ahead, Holi in Mathura and Vrindavan is quite simply one of the greatest festival experiences to be found anywhere on earth.
