How to Reach the Taj Mahal

Quick Answer

Quick Read 3+ Reviews

To reach the Taj Mahal, get to Agra by train or road, then take a taxi or e-rickshaw to a car park, since no petrol or diesel vehicle may come within 500 m. From there a free battery bus carries you to the gate.

I was born in Delhi and I have brought travelers to the Taj for 11 years with Experience My India and the part that catches almost everyone out is not the drive, it is the last few hundred metres. No fuel-burning vehicle is allowed near the marble, so however you arrive, you finish the journey the same way. Here is exactly how to reach the Taj Mahal, gate by gate.

How to reach the Taj Mahal, in short

The Taj Mahal is in Agra, in Uttar Pradesh, about 230 km south of Delhi. You reach the city by train, car or bus, most people arrive at Agra Cantt railway station or drive down the Yamuna Expressway and from there it is a short 15 to 20 minute ride to one of the Taj Mahal's car parks. Because petrol and diesel vehicles are banned close to the monument, the final stretch to the gate is by free electric battery bus, golf cart, e-rickshaw or on foot.

The last 500 metres: why you cannot drive to the Taj

To protect the marble from pollution, no polluting vehicle is allowed within a 500 metre radius of the Taj Mahal. So wherever your taxi, auto or car comes from, it stops at one of two official car parks: Shilpgram, which serves the East Gate and Amrood ka Teela, which serves the West Gate. From the car park you cover the last 500 metres to one kilometre by a free ASI battery bus or golf cart, by a cheap e-rickshaw, by cycle-rickshaw or tonga or simply on foot. The battery bus and golf cart are included free with SAARC, BIMSTEC and foreign tickets, along with shoe covers, a water bottle and a guide map; Indian visitors pay a small charge of around ₹10 to ₹20. Do not let a driver tell you he can take you to the gate itself, he cannot and neither can anyone else.

Which gate should you use?

There are three gates, but you will only ever enter through two of them. The right choice depends on where you are staying and coming from.

-

West Gate

The West Gate is the busiest and the most convenient if you are coming from the city or from Agra Cantt station, which is why most taxis head here by default. Expect the largest crowds and use the Amrood ka Teela car park.

East Gate

The East Gate is the calmer of the two, closest to the Taj Ganj and Fatehabad Road hotels and the one I recommend for a sunrise visit. It is also the gate used for night viewing. Park at Shilpgram.

South Gate

The South Gate, beside the Taj Ganj market, is now used as an exit rather than an entrance, so plan to come in through the East or West Gate and leave whichever way suits you.

Reaching the Taj Mahal within Agra

From Agra Cantt railway station

Agra Cantt (AGC) is the main station and the arrival point for the Gatimaan and most fast trains, about 5 km from the Taj or 15 to 20 minutes by road via Mall Road and Fatehabad Road. Use the government prepaid taxi booth just outside the platform for a fixed, no-haggle fare or an app cab for around ₹200 to ₹300 to the West Gate parking. Auto-rickshaws are cheaper at roughly ₹150 to ₹200, but agree to the fare before you get in.

From Agra Fort railway station

Agra Fort station is actually closer to the Taj at about 4 km and handy if your train stops there. An auto-rickshaw reaches the West Gate in 10 to 15 minutes. There is also a small Taj East Gate halt served by a short priority corridor for some trains.

From the airport and bus stand

Agra's own airport has only limited flights, so most air travelers fly into Delhi and continue by train or car. If you arrive by bus, the Idgah and ISBT stands are around 8 to 10 km from the Taj, with autos and cabs waiting. From either, the same rule applies: you will be dropped at a car park, not the gate.

Reaching Agra from Delhi, Jaipur and beyond

Coming from Delhi, the Taj is about 230 km away, roughly four hours by car on the Yamuna Expressway or under two hours on the Gatimaan Express. Agra also connects by rail and road to Jaipur, Gwalior, Mumbai and Kolkata. I have laid out every route, train and toll in our Delhi to Agra distance guide, so here I have focused on the part most guides skip: reaching the monument once you are actually in Agra.

A few practical notes

Travel light, because luggage is not allowed inside the complex; there are cloakrooms at the station and at the gates or leave bags at your hotel. Go at opening for the softest light and the thinnest crowds, carry some cash since not every stall takes cards and hire guides and photographers only from the official ASI desk, never from someone who approaches you outside. And never plan your visit for a Friday, when the Taj is closed to tourists.

Want to skip the parking, the gate confusion and the touts entirely? Message me on WhatsApp with your dates and Experience My India will bring you door to gate.

Let us get you there

The easiest way to reach the Taj is to let someone who does it daily handle the logistics. There is a sunrise Taj Mahal tour from Delhi with transport, entry and a guide included or an Agra overnight tour if you want a relaxed dawn visit. If Jaipur is also on your route, the Golden Triangle tour links all three cities and you can browse our full range of Agra tours to find your fit.
