The history of Humayun's Tomb
Humayun's Tomb was commissioned in 1558 by Empress Bega Begum, the devoted chief consort of the second Mughal emperor Humayun, in his loving memory some years after his death and was designed and built by skilled Persian architects brought to India for the purpose. It was the first mature and fully realised example of a grand Mughal garden-tomb anywhere on the Indian subcontinent and it set the architectural pattern for all the great Mughal tombs that would follow it over the next century.
Most famously of all, Humayun's Tomb was the direct architectural blueprint and inspiration for the Taj Mahal in Agra, built by Humayun's great-great-grandson, the emperor Shah Jahan, nearly a century later. You can clearly see in Humayun's Tomb all the great ideas that would later be refined and perfected in the Taj: the great bulbous domed mausoleum raised high on a broad arched platform, built in symmetrical form and set at the very centre of a formal, four-part paradise garden. For this reason, many historians and visitors alike call Humayun's Tomb the forerunner or the first great draft of the Taj Mahal and seeing it first makes the Taj all the more meaningful, as our Taj Mahal ticket price and timings guide covers that later wonder in full.
The architecture of Humayun's Tomb
Humayun's Tomb is a masterpiece of early Mughal architecture, blending Persian and Indian styles and is famous for several great features.
The Charbagh gardens: the tomb stands at the very centre of a magnificent, perfectly symmetrical Charbagh or four-quadrant garden, divided by water channels and stone walkways into four equal parts, a classic Persian design meant to represent the gardens of paradise.
Red sandstone and marble: the monument is built mainly of vibrant red sandstone, with inlay and detailing in white marble, a striking combination later echoed at the Taj.
The double dome: it features the first grand-scale use of a Persian double dome in India, a dome built in two shells, which gives the building its soaring, graceful outline.
Grand symmetry and scale: the whole design is one of perfect symmetry and impressive scale, with the great tomb raised on a high, arched platform.
Together, these features make Humayun's Tomb not just a strikingly beautiful building to admire, but genuinely one of the most important, innovative and influential monuments in the whole history of Indian architecture, the point at which the grand Mughal style truly came of age.
Why Humayun's Tomb is a must-visit
Beyond its beauty and history, there are several reasons Humayun's Tomb is so special and well worth a visit:
The royal necropolis: the complex contains the highest concentration of Mughal royal burials anywhere in a single place, with over 150 members of the imperial family interred within its walls, which makes it a true and poignant royal necropolis.
An architectural marvel: built in vibrant red sandstone with delicate white marble inlay and crowned by the first grand-scale Persian double dome in India, it is a genuine landmark in the long history of Mughal architecture.
A serene atmosphere: many locals and seasoned travellers quietly prefer Humayun's Tomb to Delhi's more crowded attractions, for its wonderfully peaceful, dignified and sophisticated atmosphere and its sprawling green lawns, a calm and restful oasis in the heart of the busy city.
Humayun's Tomb timings
Humayun's Tomb is open every day of the week, from 6 AM to 6 PM, from sunrise to sunset. Most visitors spend a good hour or two exploring the tomb, its gardens and the other monuments in the complex.
The best time to visit is the early morning, between about 6 and 8 AM, soon after opening, to enjoy the monument and its gardens in the soft, golden morning light, in cooler, fresher air and before the day's crowds and tour groups arrive. The late afternoon, in the golden hour just before sunset, is also especially beautiful, when the low sun lights up the warm red sandstone wonderfully, offering superb opportunities for photography. The cool season, from October to March, is by far the most comfortable time of year to visit Delhi and the tomb, avoiding the intense heat of the northern Indian summer.
Humayun's Tomb entry fees
The Humayun's Tomb entry fee is modest and there is an excellent combo ticket that is well worth considering.
Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC citizens: ₹40 per person, at the time of writing.
Foreign nationals: ₹600 per person, at the time of writing.
Children under 15: free entry.
Combo ticket: a combo ticket, at approximately ₹115 for Indian citizens at the time of writing, grants access to Humayun's Tomb, the new museum and the Sunder Nursery all together and is highly recommended for the extra value.
If you plan to see the museum and the beautiful Sunder Nursery as well as the tomb itself, which is very much worth doing and easily fills a half-day, the combo ticket works out much better than buying separate entries for each, so it is well worth asking for it at the entrance. As always, do remember that these rates are set by the authorities and can change from time to time, so it is wise to reconfirm the current fees before you travel.
Key highlights within the complex
Humayun's Tomb is the centrepiece of a larger complex with several wonderful things to see, which the combo ticket helps you enjoy together:
Humayun's Tomb Museum: India's first state-of-the-art sunken, underground museum, which brilliantly interprets 700 years of Mughal history and displays rare artefacts, including the mausoleum's own original copper and gold finial that once crowned the dome. Note that the museum is closed on Mondays, though the tomb itself stays open.
Isa Khan's Tomb: a beautiful octagonal tomb and mosque complex, right inside the enclosure near the entrance, which actually predates Humayun's Tomb itself by over twenty years and is a lovely, atmospheric and often much quieter spot to pause.
Sunder Nursery: directly linked with the tomb complex, this beautifully restored 90-acre heritage park features several Mughal-era monuments, formal water gardens, sweeping lawns and Delhi's most diverse arboretum, a genuinely wonderful green space to wander and relax in.
Together, the great tomb and its gardens, the fascinating museum, the peaceful Isa Khan's tomb and the lovely Sunder Nursery make for a genuinely rich and rewarding half-day out, among the most pleasant few hours you can spend anywhere in Delhi, so do try to allow enough time to enjoy them all without rushing.
